  • In recent years, modular-type floating islands have been considered as a promising option for future ocean space utilization. A modular floating island consists of a number of standardized pontoon-type modules and connectors between them. In this study, the motion responses of a modular floating island in waves was investigated based on frequency-domain numerical analysis. The numerical method is based on the potential flow theory and adopts a higher-order boundary element method with Green's function. First, motion RAOs were directly compared with the model test data by reference to validate the present numerical method. Then, numerical investigations were conducted to analyze the motion characteristics of the floating island by considering various modules shapes and arrangements. It was found that motion responses were reduced in a single central module compared to when divided central modules were used. Finally, the effect of modular arrangement on the motion responses in irregular waves was discussed. It was confirmed that multiple-layer outer modules are more effective in calming the central module than using single-layer outer modules, except under very long period conditions.

  • We have developed a 270-W 15-kHz MOPA system based on side-pumped rod-type Nd:YAG gain modules. The master oscillator is a 3-W 15-kHz $TEM_{00}$ $Nd:YVO_4$ laser with a pulse duration of 30 ns. To preserve the high beam quality during the amplification, we use image relay and polarization rotation which can simultaneously compensate for thermal lensing and thermal birefringence generated in the rod-type gain modules. After the amplification to 270 W with six rod-type gain modules, the beam quality factor ($M^2$) of the amplified laser beam is 5-10, and the pulse duration is maintained at 30 ns.

  • A modular multilevel-clamped composited multilevel converter ($M-MC^2$) is proposed. $M-MC^2$ enables topology reconfiguration, power device reuse, and composited clamping. An advanced five-level converter ($5L-M-MC^2$) is derived from the concept of $M-MC^2$. $5L-M-MC^2$ integrates dual three-level T-type modules and one three-level neutral point clamped module. This converter can also integrate dual three-level T-type modules and one passive diode module by utilizing the device reuse scheme. The operation principle and SPWM modulation are discussed to highlight converter performance. The proposed $M-MC^2$ is comprehensively compared with state-of-the-art five-level converters. Finally, simulations and experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the main contributions of this study.

  • The temperature of PV modules that integrated into building facades or roof increases that could reduce the electrical efficiency of the PV system. In order to incresae PV system's efficiency it is very important to remove the heat from the PV modules. For this purpose, hot air can be extracted from the space between PV modules and building envelope, and used for heating in buildings. The solar collector utilizing this thermal effect is called photovoltaic-thermal(PVT) solar collector. This paper compares the experimental performance of building-integrated PVT collectors that applied on building roof and facade. There are two different case: a roof-integrated PVT type and a facade-integrated PVT type. The experimental results show that the collected thermal energy of the roof-integrated type was 24% higher, compared to that of the facade-integrated.

  • Building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system operates as a multi-functional building construction material. They not only produce electricity, but also are building integral components such as facade, roof, window and shading device. On the other hands lots of architectural considerations should be reflected such as Installation position, shading, temperature effect and so on. As PV modules function like building envelope in BIPV, combined thermal and PV performance should be simultaneously evaluated This study is on the combined thermal and PV performance evaluation of BIPV modules. The purpose of this study is to investigate a temperature effect of PV module depending on the ventilation type of PV module backside. Test cell experiment was performed to identify the thermal and power effect of PV modules. Measurement results on the correlation of temperature and power generation were obtained. Those results can be utilized for the development of optimal BIPV installation details in the very early design stage.

  • The one and two pair of oxide modules for high temperature thermoelectric power generation were fabricated with $Ca_{2.7}Bi_{0.3}Co_4O_9$(p-type) and $Ca_{0.96}Bi_{0.04}Mn_{0.96}Nb_{0.04}O_3$(n-type) on $Al_2O_3$ substrate. For the optimizing of the design process, contact resistance was derived from the results of the one pair modules, and then the resistance of two pair modules were calculated to use the derived data. Those values were compared with the measured values for the optimizing of this design process. The resistance of calculated and measured two pairs modules was 0.956 $\Omega$ and 1.110 Q $\Omega$ $T_h$=833 K, respectively, the difference of resistance was about 0.15 $\Omega$. From the result, proposed design process is effective for high temperature thermoelectric oxide modules fabrication.

  • FreeType is a rasterizer which is commonly used in different operating systems like Linux, android etc. Although FreeType is open source but it is not easy to add/remove modules and services etc. for developers. This paper proposes a new module for FreeType named as FreeType Outlet adapter (FOA). It enables to add/remove modules, services, functionality etc. inside FreeType. It acts as the bridge to add functions from outside FreeType to the inner core of FreeType. New font formats like METAFONT, animated fonts and customized fonts which currently are not supported by FreeType can be added with this FOA module.
