  • The present study is devoted to the influence of a superposed radial inflow in a rotor-stator cavity with a peripheral opening. The flow regime is turbulent, the two boundary layers being separated by a core region. An original theoretical solution is obtained for the core region, explaining the reason why a weak radial inflow has no major influence near the periphery of the cavity but strongly affects the flow behavior near the axis. The validity of the theory is tested with the help of a new set of experimental data including the radial and tangential mean velocity components, as well as three components of the Reynolds stress tensor measured by hot-wire anemometry. The theoretical results are also in good agreement with numerical results obtained with the Fluent code and experimental data from the literature.

  • The present work investigates the heat transfer characteristics for laminar fully developed forced convection in an internally finned tube with axially uniform heat flux and peripherally uniform temperature through analytical models of convection in a porous medium. Using the Brinkman-extended Darcy flow model and the two equation model fur heat transfer, analytical solutions fur fluid flow and heat transfer are obtained and compared with the exact solution for fluid flow and the numerical solutions for conjugate heat transfer to validate the porous medium approach. Using the analytical solutions, parameters of engineering importance are identified and their effects on fluid flow and heat transfer are studied. Also, the expression fur total thermal resistance is derived from the analytical solutions and minimized in order to optimize the thermal performance of the internally finned tubes.

  • Numerical and laboratory studies have been conducted to test the ability of Electrical Resistance Tomography-a technique used to map the electrical resistivity of the subsurface-to delineate contaminant plumes. Two-dimensional numerical models were created to investigate survey design and resolution. Optimal survey design consisted of both downhole and surface electrode sites. Resolution models revealed that while the bulk fluid flow could be outlined, small-scale fingering effects could not be delineated. Laboratory experiments were conducted in a narrow glass tank to validate theoretical models. A visual comparison of fluid flow with ERT images also showed that, while the bulk fluid flow could be seen in most instances, fine-scale effects were indeterminate.

  • Flow distribution and pressure drop analysis for an inlet plenum of a Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) have been performed using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations have been solved in conjunction with $k-{\epsilon}$ model as a turbulence closure. Non-uniformity in flow distribution is assessed for the reference case and parametric studies have been performed for rising channels diameter, Reynolds number and angle between the inlet ports. Also, two different shapes of the inlet plenum namely, rectangular shape and oval shape, have been analysed. The relative flow mal-distribution parameter shows that the flow distribution in the rising channels for the reference case is strongly non-uniform. As the rising channels diameter decreases, the uniformity in the flow distribution as well as the pressure drop inside the inlet plenum increases. Reynolds number is found to have no effect on the flow distribution in the rising channels for both the shapes of the inlet plenum. The increase in angle between the inlet ports makes the flow distribution in the rising channels more uniform.

  • We conducted a numerical study of AC-electroosmotic (alternating current) effect on the fluid flow and mixing in a 3-D microchannel. The microchannel used as an efficient micro-mixer is composed of a channel and a series of pairs of electrodes attached in zigzag pattern on the bottom wall. The AC electric field is applied to the electrodes so that a steady flow current takes place around the electrodes. This current is flowing across the channel and thus contributing to the mixing of the fluid within the channel. We performed numerical simulations by using a commercial code to obtain a steady flow field. This steady flow is then used in evaluation of the mixing performance via the concept of mixing index. It was found that good combination of two kinds of electrode, which gave us a good mixing, is not simple harmonic. And when the length ratio of these two kinds of electrode is 2:1, we can get the best mixing effect.

  • As the operating range of centrifugal pump is expanded recently, the various suction conditions are demanded. The most important problem in the suction conditions is cavitation. In this study, to analyze the characteristics for such the cavitation, first the validity of the numerical analysis was certified through comparison with the experimental result of performance curve according to flow rate for the industrial centrifugal pump. At this time, the transient numerical analysis for the full type model of the centrifugal pump was performed to get more accurate results. The numerical analysis on the cavitation of centrifugal pump were conducted on the two-phase flow as the same method of one-phased flow.

  • The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique can be used to obtain a whole-field view of thermal counterflow velocity profile in He II. Using commercially available microspheres, we have been able to visualize the normal fluid velocity in He II thermal counterflow; however, the measured velocities are less than predicted from the two fluid model. None the less, the PIV is a useful tool for observing the counterflow field in He II flow, particularly where the flow is complex as occurs through channel constrictions or around bluff objects. The present paper shows recent results using PIV to observe He II counterflow. Two cases are discussed: 1D channel flow and turbulent flow around a circular cylinder.

  • Analyzed in this paper is fluid flow in the region near the exhaust and blower ports of the ventilation ducts inside a vehicle tunnel. Theoretical analysis shows that prediction of the energy loss in this region is important for designing the ventilation system. A finite-difference numerical model for the two-dimensional turbulent flow field was used to obtain the flow solution as well as the energy loss. It was shown that the blower-nozzle angle ($\beta$) had an important role in establishing both the pressure gradient and the energy loss, while the effect of the distance between two ports on them was not so significant.

  • Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. High speed spindles require non-contact type sealing mechanism. In this study, an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. This paper categorizes geometries of mostly used non-contact type seals and analyzes each leakage characteristics to minimize a leakage on sealing area. Effect of minimum clearance and its position are considered according to variation of detail geometry. The estimation of non-leaking property is determined by amount of pressure drop in the leakage path assuming constant leakage flow. To simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication, the working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model were introduced in CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. Design parameters has been induced to minimize leakage in limited space, and a methodological study on geometrical optimization has been conducted.

  • A two-step approach has been used to obtain a new criterion for the onset of slug formation : (1) In the first step, a more general expression than the existing models for the onset of slug flow criterion has been derived from the analysis of singular points and neutral stability conditions of the transient one-dimensional two-phase flow equations of two-fluid model. (2) In the second step, introducing simplifications and incorporating a parameter into the general expression obtained in the first step to satisfy a number of physical conditions a priori specified, a new simple criterion for the onset of slug flow has been derived. Comparisons of the present model with existing models and experimental data show that the present model agrees very closely with Taitel & Dukler's model and experimental data in horizontal pipes. In an inclined pipe ($\theta$ =50$^{\circ}$), however, the difference between the predictions of the present model and those of existing models is appreciably large and the present model gives the best agreement with Ohnuki et al.'s data.
