  • Micro PIV was applied to measure velocity profiles of two-fluid flows in a microchannel. In this work, the two-fluid flow of two glycerol-water mixtures was measured for three cases $(\phi=0\;and\;\phi=0.2;\;\phi=0.1\;and\;\phi=0.5;\;\phi=0\;and\;\phi=0.6)$. The flow rates of two fluids were the same. The experimental velocity profiles agreed well with numerical simulations. However, a slight deviation was found in the fluid with low concentration. Rather than the effects of the varying refractive indices inside the channel, the high velocity gradient effect was thought as the main source of the deviation.

  • A compressible two-fluid two-phase flow computation model using the stiffened-gas equation of state is formulated. Since the conservation equation system is of mixed type, it gives complex eigenvalues. The sonic speeds obtained from the individual single phase have been simply used in the literature for the fastest wave speeds necessary in the HLL scheme. This method has worked fine but proved to be quite diffusive according to our test. To improve the accuracy, we here propose to utilize the analytic eigenvalues evaluated from an approximate Jacobian matrix lot the fastest wave speeds. The interfacial transfer terms were dropped in constituting the Jacobian matrix for this purpose. The present scheme proved efficient, robust and accurate in comparison with other existing methods. We solved the cavitating flow problem using the present scheme. The result shows more detailed wave structure in the cavitating process caused by the strong expansion waves.

  • Stratified flow in horizontal tubes is frequently observed in gas-liquid two-phase flow system. In the two-fluid modeling, it is important to define the interface shape in solving the balance equations to determine the key parameters such as the interfacial transfer terms, void fraction, and pressure drop. A double-circle model is usually introduced to depict the concave-down interface in a horizontal circular tube under the stratified-wavy flow condition. However, calculation of the central angle in the double-circle model, which represents the interfacial curvature, requires an appropriate iterative numerical root-finding scheme to solve the implicit transcendental equation. In this study, an explicit approximate equation has been proposed without requirement of the iterative scheme and numerical instability, which is expected to improve the coding process and computation efficiency in the analysis code with the two-fluid model.

  • A simply supported pipe conveying fluid and two moving masses upon it constitute this nitration system. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation. The influence of the velocities of two moving masses, the distance between two moving masses, and the velocities of fluid flow in the pipe have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported pipe by numerical method. The velocities of fluid flow are considered with in its critical values of a simply supported pipe without moving masses upon It. Their coupling effects on the transverse vibration of a simply supported pipe are inspected too. As the velocity of two moving masses increases, the deflection of a simply supported pipe is increased and the frequency of transverse vibration of a simply supported pipe is not varied. In case of small distance between two masses, the maximum deflection of the pipe occur when the front mass arrive at midspan. Otherwise as the distance get larger, the position of the front masses where midspan deflection is maximum moves beyond the midpoint of a simply supported pipe. The deflection of a simply supported pipe is increased by coupling of the velocities of moving masses and fluid flow.

  • Since the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow is the difficulty topic, a numerical simulation for two phase flow remains as one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around conical body combined with cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with k-e turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations. Also, the calculation of cavitation in cryogenic fluid is being done by implementing the temperature sensitivity in government equations and it is still in the progress. This code have been being further extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics around inducers and impellers in turbo pump system.

  • The two-fluid model is widely used for practical applications involving multi-phase flows in chemical reactor, nuclear reactor, desalination systems, boilers, and internal combustion engine. There are several modeling terms in the two-fluid model, which must be determined properly. This study suggests the best models for turbulent vertical bubbly flow.

  • This study analyzes especially drag and lift models recently developed for fluid-solid, fluid-fluid or liquid-liquid two-phase flows to understand their applicability on the computational fluid dynamics, CFD modeling of pulsatile blood flow. Virtual mass effect and the effect of red blood cells, RBCs aggregation on CFD modeling of blood flow are also shortly reviewed to recognize future tendencies in this field. Recent studies on two-phase flows are found as very useful to develop more powerful drag-lift models that reflect the effects of blood cell's shape, deformation, concentration, and aggregation.

  • A numerical simulation was made to determine the motion of particles in the fluid. The simulation is based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The fluid motion was solved using a PISO-based finite-element method and a $\kappa-\epsilon$ model of turbulence. In the Lagrangian method for the solid phase, the trajectories of particles are calculated by integrating the equations of motion of a single Particle, and the collision between particles are taken into account. The influence of particles on the fluid phase is taken into account by introducing source terms in the Eulerian equations govering the fluid flow. It is known as the particle-source-in-cell (PSIC) method. Also, the turbulent effect in the particles and fluid notion is considered. The numerical results were compared with the experiment for a two-phase flow in a vertical pipe.

  • The present paper addresses magnetohydrodynamic pulsating flow and heat transfer of two immiscible, incompressible, and conducting couple stress fluids between two permeable beds. The flow between the permeable beds is assumed to be governed by Stokes' [28] couple stress fluid flow equations, whereas the dynamics of permeable beds is determined by Darcy's law. In this study, matching conditions were used at the fluid-fluid interface, whereas the B-J slip boundary condition was employed at the fluid-porous interface. The governing equations were solved analytically, and the expressions for velocity, temperature, mass flux, skin friction, and rate of heat transfer were obtained. The analytical expressions were numerically evaluated, and the results are presented through graphs and tables.

  • The operational effect of traffic signal control improvement was evaluated using the Two-Fluid Model. The parameters engaged in the Two-Fluid Model becomes food indicators to measure the quality of traffic flow due to the improvement of traffic signal operation. A series of experiment were conduced for the 31 signalized intersections in Uijeongbu City. To estimate the parameters in the Two-Fluid Model the trajectory informations of individual vehicles were collected using the CORSIM and Run Time Extension. The test results showed 35 percent decrease of average minimum trip time per unit distance. One of the parameters in the Two-Fluid Model is a measure of the resistance of the network to the degraded operation with the increased demand. The test result showed 28 percent decrease of this parameter. In spite of the simulation results of the arterial flow, it was concluded that the Two-Fluid Model is useful tool to evaluate the improvement of the traffic signal control system from the macroscopic aspect.
