This paper deals with the analysis of the natural frequencies, mode shapes of an axially loaded beam system carrying ends consisting of non-concentrated tip masses and three spring-two mass sub-systems. The influence of system design and sub-system parameters on the combined system characteristics is the major part of this investigation. The effect of material properties, rotary inertia and shear deformation of the beam system is included. The end masses are elastically supported against rotation and translation at an offset point from the point of attachment. Sub-systems are attached to center of gravity eccentric points out of the beam span. The boundary conditions of the ordinary differential equation governing the lateral deflections and slope due to bending of the beam system including developed shear force frequency dependent terms, due to the sub.system suspension, have been formulated. Exact formulae for the modal frequencies and the modal shapes have been derived. Based on these formulae, detailed parametric studies are carried out. The geometrical and mechanical parameters of the system under study have been presented in non-dimensional analysis. The applied mathematical model is presented to cover wide range of mechanical, naval and structural engineering applications.
A micromixer is a component of a lab-on-a-chip or microfluidic device that mixes two or more chemicals together(convergence). The purpose of this study is to assess the performance of passive micromixer of various shapes. Six shapes of micromixers were compared and three dimensional modeling was carried out to have the same hydraulic diameter. The commercial code, ANSYS Fluent, was used to simulate the internal mixing flow. A numerical analysis method is described in detail in this paper. The performance of the micromixer was compared with the mixing index and pressure drop. Consequently, the CDM-8T shape showed reasonable mixing performance and relatively low pressure drop.
Dynamic behaviour of beam carrying masses has attracted attention of many researchers and engineers. Many studies on the analytical solution of beam with concentric tip mass have been published. However, there are limited works on vibration analysis of beam with an eccentric three dimensional object. In this case, bending and torsional deformations of beam are coupled due to the boundary conditions. Analytical solution of equations of motion of the system is complicated and lengthy. Therefore, in this study, Differential Transform Method (DTM) is applied to solve the relevant equations. First, the Timoshenko beam with 3D tip attachment whose centre of gravity is not coincident with beam end point is considered. The beam is assumed to undergo bending in two orthogonal planes and torsional deformation about beam axis. Using Hamilton's principle the equations of motion of the system along with the possible boundary conditions are derived. Later DTM is applied to obtain natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system. According to the relevant literature DTM has not been applied to such a system so far. Moreover, the problem is modelled by Ansys, the well-known finite element method, and impact test is applied to extract experimental modal data. Comparing DTM results with finite element and experimental results it is concluded that the proposed approach produces accurate results.
Flow distribution and pressure drop analysis for an inlet plenum of a Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) have been performed using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations have been solved in conjunction with $k-{\epsilon}$ model as a turbulence closure. Non-uniformity in flow distribution is assessed for the reference case and parametric studies have been performed for rising channels diameter, Reynolds number and angle between the inlet ports. Also, two different shapes of the inlet plenum namely, rectangular shape and oval shape, have been analysed. The relative flow mal-distribution parameter shows that the flow distribution in the rising channels for the reference case is strongly non-uniform. As the rising channels diameter decreases, the uniformity in the flow distribution as well as the pressure drop inside the inlet plenum increases. Reynolds number is found to have no effect on the flow distribution in the rising channels for both the shapes of the inlet plenum. The increase in angle between the inlet ports makes the flow distribution in the rising channels more uniform.

Particles reinforced MMCs have many advantages over monolithic metals including a higher specific modulus, higher specific strength, better properties at elevated temperatures and better wear resistance. SiC$_p$/A16061 composites have good results in its mechanical properties. This work investigates SiC$_p$/A16061 composites in the microscopic view and compares the analytical results with the experimental ones. The discrepancy of the material properties between the reinforced particle, SiC$_p$, and the matrix material, A16061 appears to be so significant. Especially the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of A16061 is 5 times larger than that of SiC$_p$. Thermal residual stress in MMCs is induced at high temperatures. The shape of particle is various but the theoretical model is not able to consider the nonuniform shape. Particle distribution is not homogeneous in experimental specimen. However, it is assumed to be homogeneous in simulation model. The shapes of particles are assumed to be not only perfect global but hexahedral shapes. The types of particle distribution are two - simple cubic array(SC array) and face-centered cubic array(FCC array).

The development of a numerical model using the fractional area/volume obstacle representation (FAVOR) method for predicting a nearshore current field bounded by complicated geometric shapes, and a three-dimensional (3D) beach evolution was described in this article. The 3D model was first tested against three cases to simulate the nearshore current fields around coastal structures, a river mouth, and a large scale cusp bathymetry. Then, the morphodynamic model tests, which are adopting the nearshore current model, were applied for the computations of beach evolution around a detached breakwater and two groins. It was confirmed that the presented model associated with the FAVOR method was useful to predict the nearshore current field in the vicinity of the complicated geometric shapes. Finally, the model was applied to a tombolo formation in a field site of Kunnui fishery port, which is located in Hokkaido, Japan.
Although we look at objects as 2D images through our eyes, we can reconstruct the shape and/or depth of objects. In order to realize this ability using computers, it is required that the method which can estimate the 3D features of object from 2D images. As feature which represents 3D shapes effectively, three dimensional vector autoregressive model is pro- posed. If this feature is associated other feature of 2D shape, then above aim might be achieved. On the other hand, as feature which represents 2D shapes, quasi moment features is proposed. As the first step of association of these features, we constructed real time simulator that computes both of two features concurrently from object data (3D curves) . This simulator can also rotate object and estimate the rotation The method using 3D VAR model estimates the rotation correctly, but the estimation by quasi moment features includes much errors. This reason would be that projected images are constructed by the points only, and doesn't have enough sizes to estimate the correct 3D rotation parameters.

The behavior of unsteady wake vortices for the two-dimensional flat plate is simulated by a discrete vortex method. The flat plates and their wakes are represented by vortex sheets. The vortex sheets are replaced with discrete vortices. The freely deforming wake sheets are computed as a part of solution and the ground effect is included by a image method. In order to predict wake shapes accurately and to model closely coupled aerodynamic interference, a vortex core model and a vortex core addition scheme are used. The simulated wake shapes convecting behind the plates in unsteady motion are compared to a flow visualization result and other numerical results. The present results agree well with them. The present method is also applied to the aerodynamic analysis of flat plates in tandem configuration in ground effect.

Dual-point aerodynamic design optimization is conducted for DLR-F6 wing-body-nacelle-pylon configuration adopting an efficient surface mesh movement method for complex junction geometries. A three-dimensional unstructured Euler solver and its discrete adjoint code are utilized for flow and sensitivity analysis, respectively. Considered design conditions are a low-lift condition and a cruise condition in a transonic regime. Design objective is to minimize drag and reduce shock strength at both flow conditions. Shape deformation is made by variation of the section shapes of inboard wing and pylon, nacelle vertical location and nacelle pitch angle. Hicks-Henne shape functions are employed for deformation of the section shapes of wing and pylon. By the design optimization, drag coefficients were remarkably reduced at both design conditions retaining specified lift coefficient and satisfying other constraints. Two-point design results show mixed features of the one-point design results at low-lift condition and cruise conditions.

Two-dimensional jet flows into a couple of confined rectangular enclosures such as an Ondol flue channel and their flow distributions were analyzed by numerical graphics : rectangular space in one enclosure is vacated and the other has 8 rectangular small posts. Both enclosures have a protruded inlet nozzle and on outlet on its center line. Steady state incompressible laminar viscous flow was assumed. The primitive forms of Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation in a cartesian coordinate system were solved numerically by the Marker and Cell method for Reynolds numbers of 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40. From the numerical graphics it was found that the flow regions in both enclosures were devided into tow parts ; one part was the jet flow localized in a narrow center region of the enclosure and the other part was the very slow recirculating flow occupying the rest of the flow region in the enclosures. However there were a little differences in the shapes of jet flow in both enclosures for Reynolds numbers of 5 and 10 and also in the shapes of recirculating flows in both enclosures for all Reynolds number. Also it was found that waving flow appeared right before the outlet at Reynolds number of 20 and more.
