In this study, PHABSIM which is a sample for 1D physical habitat and River2D, which is a sample for 2D physical habitat were applied to the main streams of Han River in order to calculate an optimum flow considering the habitats of fishes in determining the instream flow. Moreover, the Weighted Usable Area (WUA) of the two samples in each growth step (adults and spawning) of the target fish type was compared and reviewed. The optimal flow value was calculated by considering the conditions for inhabiting fishes. As a result of the correlation analysis for WUA from 1D and 2D samples was 0.87 to 0.99. The optimum flow considering the conditions of inhabiting fishes showed insignificant difference of $3m^3/s\;to\;5m^3/s$ with the exception of adults in Moon-Mak and spawning in Dal-Chun.
Forecasting of flood wave travel time is very important in terms of river management and operation. Recently, the hydrological environment of has changed due to the construction of multi-function weir in the river. It is necessary to analyze flood wave travel time, including hydraulic structures in the channel. The flood wave travel time according to the discharge and downstream water level operating conditions was analyzed using HEC-RASver5.0.3 which is capable a two-dimentional analysis. This study showed nonlinear characteristics of flood wave travel times due to increase of discharge and operating conditions. The results of this study will be helpful for the operation of multi-function weir as well as the river operation.

Ecological drought consequences have received a lot of attention in recent years. Thus, ecological drought was proposed as a new drought category to characterize the impact of drought on ecosystems. The current study used a unique drought index, the standardized supply-demand water index (SSDI), and a run theory to detect ecological drought occurrences and characteristics such as drought-affected area, drought severity, drought duration, drought frequency, and drought orientation in the Hwang River, an environmentally valuable region. Hence, to assess drought-prone areas, the bivariate probability and return period will be calculated using a two-dimensional joint copula. The core results show that (a) the Spatio-temporal characteristics of ecological drought were successfully recognized using the spatial and temporal identification approach; (b) in comparison to the SPEI meteorological drought index, the SSDI is more credible and can more readily and effectively capture the entire properties of ecological drought information; (c) the Hwang river had seen the most severe drought occurrences between the late 1990s and the mid-2020s, with 48.3 percent occurring before the twenty-first century; (d) Severe ecological drought occurrences occurred more frequently in most areas of the Hwang River (e) Only the drought duration and severity in the Hwang area were more responsive to temperature when temperatures rise around 1.1℃, the average drought duration and severity rise around 16 % and 26 %, respectively. This suggested that the Hwang River has been exposed to more severe heat stress in the twenty-first century. Thereupon droughts in the twenty-first century occurred with bigger affected regions, longer durations, higher frequency, and more intensity.

This study simulated the flood inundations of the Nakdong River catchment running through Yangsan, a small city located in the south eastern area of Korea by using the depth averaged two-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model. The numerical model employs the staggered grid system including moving boundary and a finite different method to solve the Saint-Venant equations. A second order upwind scheme is used to discretize the nonlinear convection terms of the momentum equations, whereas linear terms are discretized by a second order Leap-frog scheme(Cho and Yoon, 1998). The numerical model was applied to a real topography to simulate the flood inundation of the Yangsan basin in Yangsan. The numerical result for urban district was visualization for three dimension. These results can be essentially utilized to construct the three dimensional inundation map after building the GIS-based database in local public organizations in order to protect the life and property safely.
In this study, the simulations and analyses of flood flow due to a river inundation in a coastal urban area are carried out using a two-dimensional finite volume model with well-balanced HLLC scheme. The target area is a coastal urban area around Gohyun river which is located at Geoje city in Kyungnam province and was extremely damaged due to the heavy rainfall during the period of the typhoon "Maemi" in September 2003. For the purpose of the verification of the numerical model applied in this study, the simulated results are compared and analyzed with the inundation traces. In addition, the flood flow in an urban area is simulated and analyzed according to the scenarios of inflow variation due to the increase and decrease of the intensity of the heavy rainfall, which.
In the flood plain, river facilities such as sports facilities and ecological park are builded up since the late 2000s. The recent increase of rainfall intensity and flood frequency results in the immersions of parks and river facilities located in the flood plain. Therefore it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis for the extreme rain storm in the flood plain. In this study, to analyze the hydraulic impact by lowering and rising of the water level at flood plain, Both the FaSTMECH, which is a quasi-unsteady flow analysis model to be used for simulating the wet and dry, and the Nays2D, which is unsteady flow analysis model, are used in this study. Also, the flow velocity distribution and the inundation are compared over a period of the typhoon. As a result, the flow velocity distribution at flood plain showed very low values compared to the flow rate in the main channel. This means that the problem of sedimentation is more important than that of erosion in the flood plain.

With the recent industrial development, accidental pollution in riverine environments has frequently occurred. It is thus necessary to simulate pollutant transport and dispersion using water quality models for predicting pollutant residence times. In this study, we conducted a field experiment in a meandering reach of the Sum River, South Korea, to validate the field applicability and prediction accuracy of RAMS+ (River Analysis and Modeling System+), which is a two-dimensional (2D) stream flow/water quality analysis program. As a result of the simulation, the flow analysis model HDM-2Di and the water quality analysis model CTM-2D-TX accurately simulated the 2D flow characteristics, and transport and mixing behaviors of the pollutant tracer, respectively. In particular, CTM-2D-TX adequately reproduced the elongation of the pollutant cloud, caused by the storage effect associated with local low-velocity zones. Furthermore, the transport model effectively simulated the secondary flow-driven lateral mixing at the meander bend via 2D dispersion coefficients. We calculated the residence time for the critical concentration, and it was elucidated that the calculated residence times are spatially heterogeneous, even in the channel-width direction. The findings of this study suggest that the 2D water quality model could be the accidental pollution analysis tool more efficient and accurate than one-dimensional models, which cannot produce the 2D information such as the 2D residence time distribution.
2-D transport model based on a discrete probability distribution for a particle displacement was developed too solve advection-diffusion problems in natural stream. In this proposed model, the probabilities expressed as an average and variance function were used to predict the mass transfer between cells in one time step. The proposed model produces solutions without numerical dispersion for constant velocity, diffusion coefficient, and cross-sectional area. When the stability and positivity restrictions were satisfied, the model produced excellent results compared to analytical solutions and other finite difference methods. The proposed model is tested against the dispersion data collected in the Grand River, Canada. The simulation results show that the proposed model can properly describe the two-dimensional mixing phenomena in the natural stream.

A water pipeline buried under the riverbed could be exposed by bed erosion, therefore safe crossing sections should be analyzed for preventing damages due to the exposure of pipelines. In this study, flow and bed changes have been simulated using a two-dimensional numerical model for selecting the optimized section of pipeline crossing in the Geum River. As a result of simulation with the 20-year recurrence flood, sediment deposition has been distributed overall in the channel and bed erosion over 2 m has occurred near bridge piers. For the extreme flood simulation, the channel bed near the bridge piers has been eroded down to the buried depth. Therefore, within 140 m upstream of the bridge piers, bed erosion affects a buried pipeline in safety due to bridge pier effects and the crossing section over 150 m upstream of bridge piers is selected as a safe zone of a water pipeline.
Flow and bed changes due to tributary inflow variation at the confluence of the Namhan River and the Geumdang Stream were analyzed in this study using a two-dimensional numerical model. As a result of the numerical analysis, the velocity downstream of the confluence was greater than the velocity upstream of the confluence in the main channel regardless of the magnitude of tributary inflow. However, as tributary discharge increased, the channel erosion was accelerated and the dry area was produced at the tributary. Due to the bed erosion at the tributary, sediment transport was increased and the eroded sediments were deposited in the confluence area. The deposition in the confluence area changed the flow direction at the main channel to the left side and the localized flow eroded the channel bed at the left side. Therefore, it is expected that bank failure due to continuous bed degradation is possible in this area.
