  • This paper reports an investigation of pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques for two-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors fed by a two-phase eight-switch inverter in a fan application. The three-phase BLDC motor is widely applied in industry; however, a lower-cost two-phase BLDC motor and drive circuit has been greatly in demand in recent years. In this paper, we introduce a mathematical model of the two-phase BLDC motor with sinusoidal back electromotive forces (EMFs) based on traditional three-phase BLDC motors. To simplify the drive algorithm and speed up its application, we analyze the principle of block commutation for a two-phase BLDC motor drive in the 180-electrical-degree conduction mode, and we further propose five PWM schemes to improve the commutation performance of the two-phase BLDC drive. The effectiveness of the proposed PWM methods is verified through experiments.

  • It's known that pump head of centrifugal impeller with lager blade outlet angle is kept higher in air-water two phase flow condition, though the efficiency in water single phase flow condition is inferior. In the present study, a centrifugal impeller with variable blade outlet angles, that has higher efficiencies in both water single phase flow and air-water two phase flow conditions, is proposed. And the performances of the centrifugal impeller with variable blade outlet angles were experimentally investigated in both flow conditions of single and two-phase. In addition, effects of installing diffuser vanes on the performances of centrifugal pump with movable bladed impeller were also examined. The results are as follows: (1) The movable bladed impeller that proposed in this study is effective for higher efficiency in both water single phase and air-water two phase flow conditions. (2) When diffuser vanes are installed, the efficiency of movable bladed impeller decreases particularly at large water flow rate in water single-phase flow condition; (3) The performances of movable bladed impeller are improved by installing of diffuser vanes in air-water two-phase flow condition at relatively small water rate. The improvement by installing of diffuser vanes however disappears at large water flow rate.

  • Two-phase compressible flow fields of air-water are investigated numerically in the fixed Eulerian grid framework. The phase interface is captured via volume fractions of each phase. A way to model two phase compressible flows as a single phase one is found based on an equivalent equation of states of Tait's type for a multiphase cell. The equivalent single phase field is discretized using the Roe‘s approximate Riemann solver. Two approaches are tried to suppress the pressure oscillation phenomena at the phase interface, a passive advection of volume fraction and a direct pressure relaxation with the compressible form of volume fraction equation. The direct pressure equalizing method suppresses pressure oscillation successfully and generates sharp discontinuities, transmitting and reflecting acoustic waves naturally at the phase interface. In discretizing the compressible form of volume fraction equation, phase interfaces are geometrically reconstructed to minimize the numerical diffusion of volume fraction and relevant variables. The motion of a projectile in a water-filled tube which is fired by the release of highly pressurized air is simulated presuming the flow field as a two dimensional one, and several design factors affecting the projectile movement are investigated.

  • In this paper, the system equation for the balanced two-phase induction motor is derived and the characteristics for speed control is also analyzed in the region of constant torque and constant power. The modified vector control theory is applied to two-phase motor drive system. The speed of two-phase motor drive can be controlled precisely by the modified indirect vector control theory. The modified vector control theory is simpler comparing to the conventional vector control because of the simpler axis transformation. The computer simulations and the experimental results presented to confirm the vector control for two-phase inverter fed two phase induction motor system.

  • Two-phase flow, especially gas-liquid two-phase flow, has a wide application in industrial field. The diagnosis of two-phase flow parameters, which directly determine the flow and heat transfer characteristics, plays an important role in providing the design reference and ensuring the security of online operation of two-phase flow system. Computer tomography (CT) is a good way to diagnose such parameters with imaging method. This paper has proposed a novel image reconstruction method for thermal neutron CT of two-phase flow with improved simulated annealing (ISA) algorithm, which makes full use of the prior information of two-phase flow and the advantage of stochastic searching algorithm. The reconstruction results demonstrate that its reconstruction accuracy is much higher than that of the reconstruction algorithm based on weighted total difference minimization with soft-threshold filtering (WTDM-STF). The proposed method can also be applied to other types of two-phase flow CT modalities (such as X(𝛄)-ray, capacitance, resistance and ultrasound).

  • Five two-phase closed loop thermosyphons (TLTs) specially designed and constructed for the present study are one small scale loop, two medium scale loops (MSLI and MSLII) and two large scale loops (LSLI and LSLII). Two simulation models based on thermal resistance network, lumped and sectorial, are presented. In the Lumped model, the evaporator section is dealt as one lumped boiling section. Whereas, in the Sectorial model, all possible phenomena which would occur in the evaporator section due to the two-phase boiling process are considered in detail. Flow regimes, the flow transitions between flow regimes and other two-phase parameters involved in two-phase flows are carefully analyzed. In the present study, the results of two different simulation models are compared with experimental results. The comparisons showed that the simulation results by the Lumped model and by the Sectorial model did not show any partiality for the model used for the simulation. The simulation results according to the correlations show the various results in the large different range.

  • Cyclodextrin Glucanotransferase(EC 2.4.1.19 : 1,4-${\alpha}$-glucano) transferase, cyclizing; CGTase) can be separated and recovered in an aqueous two-phase system composed of poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG)/dextran and PEG/salt. In an aqueous two-phase system consisting of PEG 35000 (5%) and dextran T2000 (7%), all cell and debris were collected at the interphase. CGTase partitioned to the denser dextran phase at an yield of 83.4%. On the other hand, in an aqueous two-phase system consisting of PEG 35000 (10%) and sodium phosphate (15%), CGTase partitioned to the denser salt phase at an yield of 95.5%. In order to recover CGTase using an aqueous two-phase system, the PEG/salt system proved to be more efficient than the PEG/dextran system in terms of yield and cost.

  • In the present experimental study, the flow behavior in a semi-closed two-phase natural circulation loop was examined. Water was used as the working fluid. Heat flux, heater-inlet subcooling, and flow restrictions at the heater-inlet and at the expansion-tank-line were taken as the controlling parameters Six circulation modes were identified by changing heat flux and inlet subcooling conditions ; single-phase continuous circulation, periodic circulation (A), two-phase continuous circulation, and periodic circulations (B), (C), and (D). Among these, the single-phase and two-phase continuous-circulation modes exhibit no significant oscillations and are considered to be stable. Periodic circulation (A) is characterized by the large amplitude two-phase f10w oscillations with the temporal single-phase circulation between them, while periodic circulation (B) featured by the flow oscillations with continuous boiling inside the heater section. Periodic circulation (C) appears to be the manometric oscillation with continuous boiling. Periodic circulation (D) has the longer period than periodic circulation (B) and a substantial amount of liquid flow back and forth through the expansion-tank-line periodically ; this mode is considered the pressure drop oscillation. Parametric study shows that the increases of the inlet- and expansion-tank-line- restrictions and the decrease of inlet subcooling broaden the range of the stable two-phase(continuous circulation) mode.

  • A thermal-hydraulic code, named CUPID, has been developed for the analysis of transient two-phase flows in nuclear reactor components. A two-fluid three-field model was used for steam-water two-phase flows. To obtain numerical solutions, the finite volume method was applied over unstructured cell-centered meshes. In steam-water two-phase flows, a phase change, i.e., evaporation or condensation, results in a great change in the flow field because of substantial density difference between liquid and vapor phases. Thus, two-phase flows are very sensitive to the local pressure distribution that determines the phase change. This in turn puts emphasis on the accurate evaluation of local pressure gradient. This paper presents a new reconstruction method to evaluate the pressure gradient at cell centers on unstructured meshes. The results of the new scheme for a simple test function, a gravity-driven cavity, and a wall boiling two-phase flow are compared with those of the previous schemes in the CUPID code.
