  • In this study, an equivalent domain integral (EDI) method is presented to estimate the track-till integral parameter, J-value, for two dimensional cracked elastic bodies which may quantify the severity of the crack-tit) stress fields. The conventional J-integral method based on line integral has been converted to equivalent area or domain integrals by using the divergence theorem. It is noted that the EDI method is very attractive because all the quantities necessary for computation of the domain integrals are readily available in a finite element analysis. The details and its implementation are extened to both h-version finite element model with 8-node isoparametric element and p-version finite element model with high order hierarchic element using Legendre type shape fuctions. The variations with respect to the different path of domain integrals from the crack-tip front and the choice of 5-function have been tested by several examples.

  • A graded harmonic finite element formulation based on three-dimensional elasticity theory is developed for the structural analysis of 2D functionally graded axisymmetric structures. The mechanical properties of the axisymmetric solid structures composed of two different metals and ceramics are assumed to vary in radial and axial directions according to power law variations as a function of the volume fractions of the constituents. The material properties of the graded element are calculated at the integration points. Effects of material distribution profile on the static deformation, natural frequency and dynamic response analyses of particular axisymmetric solid structures are investigated by changing the power law exponents. It is observed that the displacements, stresses and natural frequencies are severely affected by the variation of axial and radial power law exponents. Good accuracy is obtained with fewer elements in the present study since Fourier series expansion eliminates the need of finite element mesh in circumferential direction and continuous material property distribution within the elements improves accuracy without refining the mesh size in axial and radial directions.

  • A finite element method based on the two-dimensional progressive failure analysis is presented for characterizing the strength and failure of the unidirectional-fabric hybrid laminated composite joints under pin loading. The 8-node laminated shell element is incorporated in the updated Lagrangian formulation. Various failure criteria including the maximum stress, Tsai-Wu, Yamada-Sun, and combinations of them are used in conjunction with the complete unloading stiffness degradation method. For the verification, joint tests are conducted for the specimens with various geometries. Although there are some differences depending on the geometry, the finite element model using the Yamada-Sun or the combined Yamada-Sun and Tsai-Wu criterion predicts the failure strength best.

  • In this paper, nonlinear static analysis of three-dimensional cable stayed bridges is performed for the time dependent materials properties such as creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete and relaxation of cable. Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge is selected as an application. The bridge located in Antalya, Turkey, was constructed with balanced cantilever construction method. Total length of the bridge is 202 m. The bridge consists of one $\ddot{e}$ shape steel tower. The tower is at the middle of the bridge span. The construction stages and 3D finite element model of bridge are modeled with SAP2000. Large displacement occurs in these types of bridges so geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the analysis by using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Two different finite element analyses carried out which are evaluated with and without construction stages and results are compared with each other. As a result of these analyses, variation of internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge tower and displacement and bending moment for bridge deck are given with detailed. It is seen that construction stage analysis has a remarkable effect on the structural behavior of the bridge.

  • This paper describes the finite element (FE) analysis results of a 1/4 scale model of a prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV) by considering the tension stiffening effect, which is a result of the bond effect between the concrete and the steel. The tension stiffening model is assumed to be an exponential form based on the relationship between the average stress and the average strain of the concrete. The objective of the present FE analysis is to evaluate the ultimate internal pressure capacity of the PCCV, as well as its failure mechanism, when the PCCV model is subjected to a monotonous internal pressure beyond is design pressure capacity. With the commercial code ABAQUS, the FE analysis used two concrete failure criteria: a 2-dimensional axi-symmetric model with modified Drucker-Prager failure criteria and a 3-dimensional model with a damaged plasticity mod디. The results of our FE analysis on the ultimate pressure capacity and failure modes of PCCV have a good agreement with the experimental data.

  • This paper presents the analysis of flows through three different types of radial compressor impeller by using quasi-three-dimensional analysis method. The method obtains two-dimensional solution for velocity distribution on meridional plane, and then calculates approximately the static pressure distributions on blade surfaces. Finite difference method is used for the solutions of governing equations. The compressors have low level compression-ratio and 12 straight radial blades with no backsweep. The results are compared with experimental data and the results of three-dimensional inviscid analysis with those by finite element method. It is found that the agreements with experimental data are good for the cases where viscous effects are not dominant.

  • An updated Lagrangian finite element analysis with automatic remeshing scheme is applied to the three-dimensional hot extrusion through landless square dies. In the remeshing procedure, it is very difficult that the meshes are generated automatically with consideration of physical characteristics. In the presented study, the mesh generation is accomplished by modular concept. The generated meshes by modular concept have advantages, especially for three-dimensional problems, such as economized computational time and consideration of physical characteristic. In the problem, orifice shapes of square die are divided into two for the extrusion of solid sections. The orifice adaptive modules are developed for each type and the numerical examples are carried out for each type.

  • In this paper the stress redistribution around tunnel face was analyzed by using a three-dimensional finite element model. The effects of in-situ stress levels, excavation sequences, stiffness difference between the hard ground and the weak zone on the stress redistributions were considered. Displacement and stress changes at tunnel crown, side wall, and invert were investigated throughout the sequential excavation. To show ground response, percentage of the displacement and stress variations are used as a function of normalized distance that is between the face and monitoring section. Preceding displacements and stress variations were presented to be adopted in the two-dimensional tunnel analysis.

  • A terminal pin, which is a part of high-voltage capacitors, has a plate-shaped head section with thickness of 0.8mm. The current manufacturing process, in which the head section is welded on the body part, has given wide deviations of part qualities such as geometrical accuracy, mechanical strength and electrical stability. In this study, a cold forging process sequence was designed in order to produce the terminal pin as one piece. The plate-shaped head section requires an upsetting in the lateral direction of a cylindrical billet, which is followed by a blanking process. The deformed geometry of the lateral upsetting, however, could not be predicted precisely by intuition since metal flows of an axial and a lateral direction of the cylindrical billet would occur simultaneously. Therefore, in this study, three dimensional finite element analyses were applied to the lateral upsetting process in order to determine a proper diameter and height of the cylindrical billet. Once the geometry of the initial billet was determined, intermediate forging processes were designed by applying cold forging guidelines and the designed process sequence was verified by two dimensional finite element analysis. In addition, cold forging tryouts were conducted by using a die set, which was manufactured based on the designed process and finally we found that the part qualities were improved by the proposed cold forging process.

  • In this study, contact analysis in a functionally graded (FG) layer loaded with two circular punches is solved using the finite element method (FEM). The problem is consisted of a functionally graded layer that resting on an elastic semi-infinite plane and is loaded with two rigid punches of circular geometry. External loads P and Q are transferred to the layer via two rigid punches. The finite element model of the functionally graded layer is created using the ANSYS package program and a 2-dimensional analysis of the problem is analyzed. The contact lengths, obtained as a result of the analysis are compared with the analytical solution in the literature. In the study, the effects of parameters such as distances between punches, loads, inhomogenity parameter on contact zones, initial separation loads and distances, normal stresses, stresses across depth and contact stresses are investigated. As a result, in this study, it can be said that the magnitude of the stresses occurring in the FG layer is less than the homogeneous layer, therefore the life of FG materials will be longer than the homogeneous layer. When the distance between the punches is 2.25, the initial separation distance is 6.98, and when the distance between the punches is 4, the initial separation distance decreases to 6.10. In addition, when the load increased in the second punch, the initial separation load decreased from 55 to 18. The obtained results are presented in the form of graphs and tables.
