The two-girder composite bridge has the girder space of more than 5m, for special case, over than 15m. Therefor, the design and construction of this bridge system require new approaches. To ensure the structural safety, the deck depth should be increased. Therefore, the economically designed deck system is necessary for th two-girder bridge. This study is the first step to develop the deck system for two-girder bridges. In this study, a literatute survey is performed to develop a new deck system for two-girder type of bridges. By considering the characteristics of two-girder bridge system, a cast-in-place PSC deck is proposed for the two-girder bridges. To examine structural behavior and safety of the proposed PSC deck, three real scale partition deck(3m$\times$5m) are tested under the static loading. In the test, the failure mode and behavior of each specimen, and ultimate load carrying capacity of the two-girder-bridge deck are identified.
To simplify the design and reduce the construction cost of traditional multi-girder structural systems, twin I-girder structures are widely used in many countries in recent years. Due to the concern on post-fracture redundancy, however, twin girder bridges are currently classified as fracture critical structures in AASHTO specifications for highway bridges. To investigate the after-fracture behavior of such structures, a composite steel and concrete twin girder specimen was built and an artificial fracture through the web and the bottom flange was created on one main girder. The static loading test was performed to investigate its mechanical performance after a severe fracture occurred on the main girder. Applied load and vertical displacement curves, and the applied load versus strain relationships at key sections were measured. To investigate the load distribution and transfer capacities between two steel girders, the normal strain development on crossbeams was also measured during the loading test. In addition, both shear and normal strains of studs were also measured in the loading test to explore the behavior of shear connectors in such bridges. The functions and structural performance of structural members and possible load transfer paths after main girder fractures in such bridges were also discussed. The test results indicate in this study that a typical twin I-girder can resist a general fracture on one of its two main girders. The presented results can provide references for post-fracture performance and optimization for the design of twin I-girder bridges and similar structures.
This paper discusses the field testing of two single-span double-tee girder (DTG) bridges in South Dakota to determine live load distribution factors (LLDFs) and the dynamic load allowance (IM). One bridge had seven girders and another had eight girders. The longitudinal girder-to-girder joints of both bridges were deteriorated in a way that water could penetrate and the joint steel members were corroded. A truck traveled across each of the two bridges at five transverse paths. The paths were tested twice with a crawl speed load test and twice with a dynamic load. The LLDFs and IM were determined using strain data measured during the field tests. These results were compared with those determined according to the AASHTO Standard and the AASHTO LRFD specifications. Nearly all the measured LLDFs were below the AASHTO LRFD design LLDFs, with the exception of two instances: 1) An exterior DTG on the seven-girder bridge and 2) An interior DTG on the eight-girder bridge. The LLDFs specified in the AASHTO Standard were conservative compared with the measured LLDFs. It was also found that both AASHTO LRFD and AASHTO Standard specifications were conservative when estimating IM, compared to the field test results for both bridges.
A existing design method of PSC girder bridges, according to total service loads, stress required tendon force at a time. Because this design method increases beam depth, design of long span is difficult. However, As UC girder stressing at difficult loading stages reduces sectional depth of PSC girder, both design and operation of long span bridges is possible. so, this study analyzes the effect of design parameter (Girder Strength, Girder Spacing, Span Length, Joint Strength) on the beam depth of IPC girder continuous bridges, and shows sectional depth of UC girder for design of long span bridges. According to analysis, when a continuous bridges of same length span is at strength of joint over strength of girder of 600kg/$cm^{2}$, a change of beam depth is observed and when a continuous bridges of different span length is at strength of joint below strength of girder of 600kg/$cm^{2}$, a change of beam depth is observed. In two case, a change of beam depth is mostly observed over strength of girder of 350kg/$cm^{2}$ according to analysis of deflection data, a continuous bridges of IPC girder is nearly satisfied.
Channel girder bridges that consist of a deck slab and two side beams are good choices for railway bridges and urban rail transit bridges when the vertical clearance beneath the bridge is restricted. In this study, the behavior of simply supported channel girder bridges was theoretical studied based on the theory of elasticity. The accuracy of the theoretical solutions was verified by the finite element analysis. The global bending of the channel girder and the local bending of the deck slab are two contributors to the deformations and stresses of the channel girder. Because of the shear lag effect, the maximum deflection due to the global bending could be amplified by 1.0 to 1.2 times, and the effective width of the deck slab for determining the global bending stresses can be as small as 0.7 of the actual width depending on the width-to-span ratio of the channel girder. The maximum deflection and transversal stress due to the local bending are obtained at the girder ends. For the channel girders with open section side beams, the side beam twist has a negligible effect on the deflections and stresses of the channel girder. Simplified equations were also developed for calculating the maximum deformations and stresses.
In order to resolve the problem of increasing traffic entailed by the economic development, road system is reorganization and new highways are built, and long span bridges over 40m are being constructed in environmental and aesthetic considerations. Most long span bridges that are currently being constructed are in general steel box girder and preflex girder bridges; however these types of breiges are less efficiency than PSC I-type girder bridges in terms of construction cost and maintenance. Therefore, in these study, structural efficiency of PSC I-type girders based on section parameters, concrete compressive strength and other design parameter is observed to develope new PSC I-type girder for long span bridges. As a results of analysis, most important design parameters that control the stress of the girder are found to be the top flange width and the height of girder. In this light, the relationship between the two variables is determined and cross-section details of the girder that most appropriates for the long span bridges are proposed. The use of high strength concrete appears to increase the general design span however the increase rate of the span from increasing concrete ultimate strength appears to be reduced depending on the span. Also, the optimal girder spacing is determined through the parameter studies of design span using the proposed girder.
Steel -Concrete Composite two girder railway bridges applying high performance steel with extra thick plate have economic and aesthetic advantages due to the simplification of manufacturing and construction process. However, steel bridges are seldom adopted in domestic railway bridge, since steel bridges are not efficient as R.C bridges considering dynamic characteristics and noise, etc. While highway bridges do not have lower horizontal bracing and larger interval of diaphragm cross beam, railway bridges install lower horizontal bracings to control the torsion due to heavy eccentrical line load. Accurate finite element analysis were performed with the parameters of existence of bracing and bracing shape, with the cross beam interval and stiffness, etc. To find out the effects of secondary members such as horizontal bracings and diaphragms, static md dynamic analysis have been performed by using finite element method. In this study, few member plate-girder bridges are analyzed with variable span lengths to examine the dynamic behavior and limits of damping. And though lateral bracings are members against torsion, but lateral bracing's absence is no big problem. Time history analysis using mode superposition method makes proof of this result.
This paper presents the two-, three-, and four-lane transverse reduction factor based on FEA method, probability theory, and the recently actual traffic flow data. A total of 72 composite girder bridges with various spans, number of lanes, loading mode, and bridge type are analyzed with time-varying static load FEA method by ANSYS, and the probability models of vehicle load effects at arbitrary-time point are developed. Based on these probability models, in accordance to the principle of the same exceeding probability, the multi-lane transverse reduction factor of these composite girder bridges and the relationship between the multi-lane transverse reduction factor and the span of bridge are determined. Finally, the multi-lane transverse reduction factor obtained is compared with those from AASHTO LRFD, BS5400, JTG D60 or Eurocode. The results show that the vehicle load effect at arbitrary-time point follows lognormal distribution. The two-, three-, and four-lane transverse reduction factors calculated by using FEA method and probability respectively range between 0.781 and 1.027, 0.616 and 0.795, 0.468 and 0.645. Furthermore, a correlation between the FEA and AASHTO LRFD, BS5400, JTG D60 or Eurocode transverse reduction factors is made for composite girder bridges. For the two-, three-, and four-lane bridge cases, the Eurocode code underestimated the FEA transverse reduction factors by 27%, 25% and 13%, respectively. This underestimation is more pronounced in short-span bridges. The AASHTO LRFD, BS5400 and JTG D60 codes overestimated the FEA transverse reduction factors. The FEA results highlight the importance of considering span length in determining the multi-lane transverse reduction factors when designing two-lane or more composite girder bridges. This paper will assist bridge engineers in quantifying the adjustment factors used in analyzing and designing multi-lane composite girder bridges.
In this study a 3-dimensional analytical model is developed, which can analyses dynamic responses of curved bridges subject to moving vehicles. A 5-axle semi-trailer is modeled to simulate the actual tire forces that are redistributed by vehicle rolling effect due to the centrifugal force. The 1-span curved bridge with two steel box girders is modeled using the frame elements. The dynamic response characteristics of curved box girder bridges are examined and compared for two different support conditions. One is the case that two shoes are arranged at the outer sides of box girders with larger space between the two shoes and the other is that two shoes at the center of each box girder. In the curved bridges, the dynamic effect of moving vehicles influences the reaction force much more than other responses, such as displacement or stress, especially the upward reaction of inner-radius shoes. It is more advantageous for the reaction considering dynamic effect when shoes are arranged further at the outer sides of box girders than when shoes at the center of each box. The shoes for curved bridges with two-box girder system should be arranged to have larger distance.
