  • This study is about the reinforcing type of reinforcement method which is reinforced in tunnel portal of tunnel with bad ground condition. Generally, it is known that the horizontal reinforcement method is more effective than the conventional reinforcement method. However, as a limitation of the tunnel construction technology, it is being constructed by the superposition reinforcement method. In recent years, high-strength large-diameter steel pipes and horizontally oriented longitudes (L = 30.0~50.0 m) construction technology have been developed. Therefore, it is required to study reinforcement method of tunnel portal reinforcement method. Therefore, 3-D numerical analysis (Midas GTS NX 3D) was performed by setting the reinforcement method (No reinforcement type, overlap reinforcement type and horizontal reinforcement type) and ground condition as parameters. As a result, it was considered that the reinforcement effect was the largest as the horizontal reinforcement type of the reinforcement method was the smallest in the displacement and the support material stress. Based on the results of the numerical analysis, horizontal steel pipe grouting was applied to the actual tunnel site. The displacement of the tunnel portal and the stress of the support material occurred within the allowable values and were considered to ensure sufficient stability.

  • The steel rib, one of the main support of tunnel, plays a very important role to stabilize tunnel excavation surface until shotcrete or rockbolt starts to perform a supporting function. In general, a steel rib at the horizontal funnel is being installed in the direction of gravity which is known favorable in terms of constructability and stability. However, as the direction of principal stress at the inclined tunnel wall is different from that of gravity, the optimum direction of steel rib could be different from that at the horizontal tunnel. In this study, a numerical method was used to analyze the direction of force that would develope displacement at the inclined tunnel surface, and that direction could be the optimum direction of steel rib. The support efficiency of steel rib could be maximized when the steel rib was installed to resist the displacement of the tunnel. Three directions which were recommended for the inclined tunnels in the Korea Tunnel Design Standard were used for the numerical models of steel rib direction. In conclusion, the results show that all displacement angle of the models are almost perpendicular to the tunnel surface regardless of face angle. So if the steel rib would be installed perpendicular to the inclined tunnel surface, the support efficiency of steel rib could be maximized.

  • For a long-term mine development plan, the determination and design of mine tunnel size are very important because it is the basis of plans for equipment, transportation and operation. The ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ mine has had a difficulty in changing the mining plan due to the design of the tunnels with an emphasis on productivity improvement, and much effort was needed to maintain the mine tunnel. In this study, we designed the mine tunnel with optimized tunnel span considering the mechanical properties of rockmass and established the support plan. To do this, the estimation of the mechanical parameters(Swelling pressure, deformation coefficient and earth coefficient), field investigations and various analyses were carried out. As a result, it was necessary to consider the downsizing of the tunnel section in order to maintain the tunnel stability and dimension by using the roof bolt and analyzed that various functional constructions of the support material and method would be required to maintain the current tunnel size.

  • The vibration resulting from railway operation is transmitted through the tunnel to adjacent buildings and the transmitted vibration radiates structure-borne noise which is causing a lot of public complaints by its negative effects to the buildings near tunnel. This study performed the parametric study about sleeper space and track support stiffness in order to reduce vibration on the concrete track and near structures. In this study, it was compared and performed vibration analysis and field test about these. In addition, as changing the sleeper space and track support stiffness, vibration of the structures was evaluated. Via this study, in terms of reducing the figure of the sleeper space and track support stiffness to the half, as vibrating acceleration transmitted through concrete round is getting reduced, it transmitted through the tunnel was analysed to the same phenomena. In conclusion, suggested track structure into this study, it can be applied to the track structure of existing line, and it is expected to be a new effective anti-vibration method to prevent public complaints.

  • Recently, many efforts have been made to construct the first unlined tunnel, without in-situ concrete lining, in Korea. However, the lack of reliability in the performance of shotcrete as permanent tunnel support prevented from its realization. Shotcrete has been regarded to have significant problems in field application and long term performance because of unsatisfactory strength level and durability compared to those of European countries. In this study, the high strength shotcrete satisfying compressive strength over 40 MPa and flexural strength over 4.5 MPa was developed from optimized mix design. The type of accelerators and the amount of silica fume were selected as the main factors in mixing process and the analyses were carried out up to the elapsed time of 2 years. In order to evaluate the short term durability of shotcrete, an array of laboratory test consisting of freeze-thaw, carbonation chloride penetration and permeability test was performed. For long-term durability tests, specimens have been put in an operated highway tunnel to expose them to the similar environment when they are actually used as an unlined tunnel support. From the strength and durability tests, it was found that only alkali-free based accelerator satisfied the target strength of this study and also, the developed shotcrete showed very high performance in its durability.

  • A 3D FEM numerical analysis was performed to observe the changes of supporting system of a old 1-lane tunnel when it is enlarged to 2-lane, 3-lane and 4-lane. The standard Type-III supporting pattern was applied to the new tunnel because the ground was assumed as Type-III. The observation was carried out at the middle supporting system of the old 1-lane tunnel alignment. The results shows that the changes of old tunnel supporting system began when the new tunnel was excavated at 2D(D is the equivalent diameter of 1-lane tunnel) behind of the observation place and became very rapid from 1D.

  • The introduction of geodetic methods of absolute displacement monitoring in tunnels has improved the value of the measurements significantly. By using this method, structurally controlled behavior and influences of an anisotropic rock mass can be determined and the excavation and support adjusted accordingly. In this study cases of tunnel monitoring in anisotropic/heterogeneous rock masses are analyzed, and various anisotrpic behavior of tunnel can be estimated. Because rock anisotropy and heterogeneity can have great influence on tunnel behavior, tunnel design considering rock anisotropy and heterogeneity is needed. Also under construction, feedback must be performed by using face mapping and monitoring to prevent over-deformation and tunnel collapse.

  • In urban areas, new tunnel construction work is often taking place adjacent to existing piled foundations. In this case, careful assessment for the pile-soil-tunnel interaction is required. However, research on this topic has not been much reported, and currently only limited information is available. In this study, the complex pile-soil-tunnel interaction is investigated using the upper and lower bound methods based on kinematically possible failure mechanism and statically admissible stress field respectively. It is believed that the limit theorem is useful in understanding the complicated interaction behaviour mechanism and applicable to the pile-soil-tunnel interaction problem. The results are compared with numerical analysis. The material deformation patterns and strain data from the FE output are shown to compare well with the equivalent physical model tests. Admissible stress fields and the failure mechanisms are presented and used to develop upper and lower bound solutions to assess minimum support pressures within the tunnel.

  • It is very important to control the final load that acts on a support system, in tunnel engineering. A reliable analysis is needed to carry out technically reasonable design and safe construction. Also, a series of procedures of construction and the rock-support interaction behavior must be considered. Most existing studies have been performed as the limited analysis based on the simplified assumption. In this study, through the analysis of a circular tunnel using a 2-D finite differential code, the rook-support interaction behaviors in the variation of rock and stress conditions are analyzed and compared with the results from the closed form solutions. Consequently, more realistic rock-support interaction curves are obtained by including the effects of initial stresses and rock condition. These cures are very useful to predict the required support pressure in the initial design stage.
