  • This paper is aimed to suggest the coefficient of variation of the total load on the segment lining and the coefficient of variation of earth pressure in reliability based design of shield tunnel. For this purpose, the statistical characteristics of weathered soil and weathered rock were calculated by analyzing the site survey data of the domestic urban section. The coefficient of variation could be estimated by applying these values to Terzaghi's theory using MCS technique. As a result, the coefficient of variation of rock load for weathered soil and weathered rock was 0.08~0.14. The coefficient of variation for the total load acting on the tunnel was LC1 = 0.38, LC2 = 0.33, and LC3 = 0.37. The proposed coefficients of variation can be used in the reliability-based design of shield tunnel segments.

  • Shield TBM tunnel linings are segmented into segments and rings. This study investigates the response characteristics of the stress and displacement of the segment lining under seismic waves through modeling that considers the interface behavior between segments by applying a shell interface element to the contact surface between segments and rings. And there is no management criteria for ovaling deformation of segment linings in Korea. So, this study the ovality criteria and meaning of segment lining. The results of study showed that the distribution patterns of stress and displacement under seismic waves were similar between continuous linings and segment linings. However, the maximum values of stress and displacement showed differences from segment linings. The stress distribution of the continuous lining modeled as a shell type has a stress distribution that has continuity in the 3D cylindrical shape, but the segment lining is concentrated outside the segment, and the largest stress occurs at the location where the contact surface between the segment and the ring is concentrated. This intermittent and localized stress distribution shows an increasing as the ovality of the lining increases at seismic waves. The ovality at which the increase in stress distribution begins to show irregularity and localization is about 150‰. Ovality of 150‰ is an unrealistic value that cannot represent actual lining deformation. Therefore, the ovality of the segment lining increase with depth, but it does not have a significant impact on the stability caused by seismic load.

  • This paper presents development of artificial neural network(ANN) based prediction method for section forces of TBM tunnel segment lining in an effort to develop an automatized design technique. A series of design cases were first developed and subsequently analyzed using the two-ring beam finite element model. The results were then used to form a database for use as training and validation data sets for ANN development. Using the database, optimized ANNs were developed that can readily be used to predict maximum sectional forces and their distributions. It is shown that the compute maximum section forces and their distributions by the developed ANNs are almost identical to the computed by the two-ring beam finite element model, implying that the developed ANNs can be used as design tools which expedite routine design calculation process. The results of this study indicate that the neural network model can be effectively used as a reliable and simple predictive tool for the prediction of segment sectional forces for design.

  • With the high quality/high stiffness/high strength of segment lining, segment lining is increasingly used as the final lining of the tunnel. Precast concrete lining has higher quality and strength than field concrete. Paradoxically, this contributes to greater damage to concrete in the event of a fire in a tunnel. In this study, tests were conducted to determine the fire resistance performance of segment linings according to fiber content in fire resistance methods using synthetic fibers such as PP fibers. As a result, it was confirmed that fire resistance performance required by the relevant project can be secured when using 1.5 kg/m3 of PP fiber. In addition, comparison of the results of PP fibers with PET, a similar synthetic fiber, showed better fire resistance performance than when PP fibers were used.

  • The shield tunnel was mostly applied to cable tunnel with a diameter of 3~4 m, recently 7.8 m diameter shield tunnel was constructed in the lower section of the Incheon International Airport runway and is planning or under construction to roads and railway tunnels in the lower section of the Han River. Segments are also becoming larger as the shield tunnel cross-section increases, which causes a number of problems in the design, construction, and performance evaluation of segments. In this study, segment lining structural safety, criteria for serviceability check considering axial forces and quality control method for approximately 8 m in diameter shield tunnel were reviewed by field measurements and full scale bending test.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) shield tunnel lining must be designed for fireproof performance because the lining is sometimes exposed to very high temperature due to traffic accidents. Both experimental and numerical studies are carried out to evaluate fire resistance performance of precast RC tunnel lining systems. In the experimental studies, six full-scale precast RC tunnel segments are exposed to fire in order to examine the influence of various parameters on the fire resistance performance of precast RC tunnel lining. We used the temperature curve of the RABT criteria, which are severe conditions of fire temperatures. The fire test showed that the explosive spalling was not observed by substituting concrete to PP fiber reinforced concrete. A transient heat flow analysis was carried out in consideration of the material properties that change with temperature, and the results showed good agreement with the test results.

  • In recent years a number of catastrophic tunnel fires, the Euro tunnel, the Mont Blanc tunnel, the Tauem tunnel and the Gotthard tunnel, have occurred and inflicted serious damages to European countries. If a fire occurs in shield tunnels, the reinforced concrete segment linings playing as an important structural member is expected to damage severely and finally can be caused the collapse of tunnel. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of concrete segment lining under heat exposure and to obtain information to assist a new technical approach to fighting fires in tunnels. In order to evaluate the fire-resistance performance of concrete segment by adding Polypropylene fibers, fire tests using the RABT heat-load curve is carried out. The temperature rise of this curve is very rapid up to $1200^{\circ}C$ within 5 minutes, and duration time of the $1200^{\circ}C$ exposure is 55 minutes. From the fire test, it was found that the explosive spalling was rapidly reduced by adding polypropylene fibers and this method is considered as an effective fireproof material to upgrade fire safety in tunnels economically.

  • The effect of segmental joints is one of main importance for the segmental lining design when tunnels are excavated by a mechanized process. In this paper, segmental tunnel linings are analyzed by two numerical methods, namely the Beam-Spring Method (BSM) and the Solid-Interface Method (SIM). For this purpose, the Tehran Subway Line 6 Tunnel is considered to be the reference case. Comprehensive 2D numerical simulations are performed considering the soil's calibrated plastic hardening model (PH). Also, an advanced 3D numerical model was used to obtain the stress relaxation value. The SIM numerical model is conducted to calculate the average rotational stiffness of the longitudinal joints considering the joints bending moment distribution and joints openings. Then, based on the BSM, a sensitivity analysis was performed to investigate the influence of the ground rigidity, depth to diameter ratios, slippage between the segment and ground, segment thickness, number of segments and pattern of joints. The findings indicate that when the longitudinal joints are flexible, the soil-segment interaction effect is significant. The joint rotational stiffness effect becomes remarkable with increasing the segment thickness, segment number, and tunnel depth. The pattern of longitudinal joints, in addition to the joint stiffness ratio and number of segments, also depends on the placement of longitudinal joints of the key segment in the tunnel crown (similar to patterns B and B').

  • In this study, as an initial study for development of stability analysis program of a double-deck tunnel during life cycle, a structural analysis solver based beam-spring model for the double-deck tunnel is constructed. Effect of parameters(slab supporting type, depth of the tunnel and ground elastic modulus) is analyzed with the beam-spring model. The model is also compared and verified by commercial structural analysis program. It is considered that the slab supporting type affects the integrated behavior with segment lining and influence of intermediate slab on the stability of the tunnel decreases as the tunnel depth increases. The relationship between the ground elastic modulus and the effect of the intermediate slab on the segment lining needs further investigation.

  • Recently, the limit state design method in the design of the structure is in global trend, but it is limited to a few structures in Korea. Since the introduction of the limit state design method has recently been attempted for tunnels, which are the main underground structures, it is surely necessary to understand the latest limit state design method. Therefore, based on the recently published AASHTO LRFD Road Tunnel Design and Construction Guide Specification (2017), structural load factors and load combinations were reviewed, and various factors which should be applied for the review of structures have been analyzed. In this study, utility tunnel section and subway tunnel sections used in Korea were analyzed by the limit state design method, and we have analyzed the direction of application of limit state design method through studying the tendency of member force by various influential factors such as ground conditions, load modifier and joint stiffness.
