  • This study analyzed a monitoring data, based on the initial limit values of monitoring in subway, of earth pressure and pore water pressure. The data is obtained from 8 sections of the Seoul metropolitan subway line No 6, 7 and 9 in about 5 years. Also, a research is performed to set up the limit values of management monitoring, which will be applied to management monitoring in tunnel, through comparing the limit values of overseas management monitoring data and that of domestic management monitoring data. And the result obtained from comparison show that the safety phase is 60% of allowable pressure, the attention phase is 80% of allowable pressure and the precision analysis phase is 100% of allowable pressure. Also, we presented a method of management monitoring by the absolute value which can be easily applied easily in practical affairs.

  • This study aims at establishing an ecological planning for road construction. which is considered to be a main cause of damage to the natural environment in Korea. This study focuses on the Pyungtak-Eumsung Highway development project. It considers the ecological factors and status of the site and its surrounding area. The study site is a four-way highway with a width of 23.4m and a length of 5.7km that spans from Hyungok-ri, Anseong City, Kyeonggi Province to Jukhyun-ri, Jincheon-gun, Chungbuk Province. The objective of the plan is "the establishment of an eco-road in harmony with nature." The plan is divided into five detailed goals: 1) restoration of river morphology and ecosystem through ecological planning; 2) establishment of wet biotopes; 3) construction of ecological corridors; 4) restoration of damaged forest ecosystems; and 5) ecological restoration of the roadside slopes that are linked with the surrounding forest. A master plan has been developed based on the detailed goals. The master plan involves: 1) establishment of a natural river, wet biotopes, and ecological corridors that facilitate the movement of amphibians, wild fowls, mammalians and fish; 2) development of a planting plan for the visitor center, the tunnel entrance, and soundproof banks; and 3) the presentation of a planting model for restoring roadside slopes that are connected to the surrounding forest. The eco-road plan needs to entail ecological conservation and restoration plans. In addition, a monitoring plan for ecological corridors and habitats should be included in the comprehensive plans, along with the continuous development of environmentally friendly technologies.

  • In order to reduce traffic accident, the interaction between drivers and roads should be studied in drivers' behaviour standpoints, and then this must be applied to the establishment of the road design standard. The K-ROADS(KICT-Road Analysis Driving Simulator) was developed to analyze and evaluate the road safety at the project HuRoSAS(Human & Road Safety Analysis System), since 2003. This has two distinct functions. One is the visual system which has 360 degree F.O.V. to reduce a dead angle on black spots as at-grade intersection. The other is the motion system which reproduce high frequency vibration made in irregular road surface and vehicle's motion. The K-ROADS has been used the study on the effect of alternatives of speed hump, and the study on the interior wall design of long tunnel to safety standpoints.

  • The air pollutant emission from the railroad diesel locomotive is still a significant environmental concern in many countries including Korea and Unites States. The emission characteristics of the railroad diesel locomotive were extensively studied in this study. Particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emitted from a large locomotive engine (2-cycle, 16-cylinder, and 3,000-horsepower) under various engine-rating conditions was analyzed with a scanning mobility particle sizer and a gas stack sampler by using a dilution tunnel. We could gain the emission values of 2.1 g/horsepower-hour for PM and 42.7 g/horsepower-hour for $NO_x$. We proposed the emission reduction goal of the railroad diesel locomotive for Korea in comparison with the regulation of United States.

  • This study investigates Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performance prediction by employing discrete event simulation technique, which is a potential remedy highlighting its stochastic adaptability to the complex nature of TBM tunnelling activities. The new discrete event simulation model using AnyLogic software was developed and validated by comparing its results with actual performance data for Daegok-Sosa railway project that Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM machine was used in Korea. The results showed the successful implementation of predicting TBM performance. However, it necessitates high-quality database establishment including geological formations, machine specifications, and operation settings. Additionally, this paper introduces a novel methodology for daily performance updates during construction, using automated data processing techniques. This approach enables daily updates and predictions for the ongoing projects, offering valuable insights for construction management. Overall, this study underlines the potential of discrete event simulation in predicting TBM performance, its applicability to other tunneling projects, and the importance of continual database expansion for future model enhancements.

  • The purpose of this study was to establish a complex disaster scenario that can comprehensively consider various disaster situations that may occur in the utility tunnel. Method: In order to comprehensively consider the correlation between disasters, a composite disaster scenario was derived from a combination of damage factors, respectively. A risk assessment was performed in order to derive the priorities of the scenarios. And based on the results, the priorities of complex disaster scenarios were set. Result: Based on the disaster cases in the utility tunnel, a plan was prepared for complex disaster scenarios centered on damage. A complex disaster scenario was specified using a semi-quantitative evaluation method for single and multiple disaster factors such as fire, flooding, and earthquake. Conclusion: The composite disaster scenario derived from this study can be used for the prevention and preparation of damage when the precursor symptoms of a disaster are detected. In addition, the results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for preparing strategic plans and preparing complex disaster response technologies to induce rapid response and recovery in case of emergency disasters.

  • In the new Seoul-Busan high speed railroad construction specially in area of city center passage the roadbed establishment is recommended the staibility for the existing subway tunnel segments of Busan subway 1st and 2nd lines regarding the appearance condition, a quality condition and the durability of the objective facility, and it evaluates the numerical analysis using MIDAS/GTS which leads the stability of the objective facility and investigatesd tunnels. Fundamental issues in tunneling under high groundwater table are discussed and the effect of groundwater on tunnel excavation was examined using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled Finite-Element Method. Based on the results the interaction mechanism between the tunnelling and groundwater is identified. In the both of 1st and 2nd Line the maximum sinkage, unequal sinkage and the lining stress from numerical analysis are within permission and the damage degree is appearing to be disregarded. But it enforces necessary Pre-grouting in order to minimize an actual tunnel face conduct and when the tunnel is excavated it is also necessary to minimize the outflow possibility.

  • To obtain tunnel concrete safety in case of fire, this study analyzed fire proof characteristics by fire proof method change, and the results are as follows. As a fire proof characteristics by RABT temperature heating curve, plain concrete experienced severe spalling by initial extremely high temperature. In view of fire proof method, in the cases of organic fiber mixing method and board method, spalling was prevented, and in the case of spray method, severe spalling of over 100mm depth occurred along with exposure of structural concrete including spray coat by heat stress, etc while metal lath, the stiffener, falls off. As for fire proof characteristics by RWS temperature heating curve, in case of organic fiber inclusion, concrete surface experienced fusion of within 5mm, while in the case of spray method, spray coat was severely spalled to a depth of over 100mm causing structural body concrete to expose its reinforcement, and also in the case of board method, board was fused by high temperature, causing structural body concrete be directly exposed to high temperature, which triggered overall fall-off phenomenon, so in such extraordinary high temperature heating condition, establishment of special fire proof measures is needed.
