Bentonite has been proposed as a buffer and backfill material for high-level radioactive waste repository. Under such repository environment conditions, bentonite is subjected to combined thermal, hydrological, mechanical, and chemical processes. This study evaluates the feasibility of applying X-ray CT technology on the characterization of bentonite under hydration conditions using a newly developed testing cell. The cylindrical cell is made of platic material, with a removable cap to place the sample, enabling to apply vertical pressure on the sample and to measure swelling pressure. The hydration test was carried out with a sample made of Gyeonju bentonite, with a dry density of 1.4 g/cm3, and a water content of 20%. The sample had a diameter of 27.5 mm and a height of 34 mm. During the test, water was injected at a constant pressure of 0.207 MPa, and lasted for 7 days. After one day of hydration, bentonite swelled and filled out the space inside the cell. Moreover, CT histograms showed how the hydration process induced an initial increase and later progressive decrease on the density of the sample. Detailed profiles of the mean CT value, CT standard deviation, and CT gradient provided more details on the hydration process of the sample and showed how the bottom and top regions exhibited a decrease on density while the middle region showed an increase, especially during the first two days of hydration. Later, the differences in CT values with respect to the initial state decreased, and were small at the end of testing. The formation and later reduction of cracks was also characterized through CT scanning.
Electrical resistivity is one of physical property of the earth and measured by electrical resistivity survey, electrical resistivity logging and laboratory test. Recently, electrical resistivity is widely used in determination of rock quality in support pattern design of road and railway tunnel construction sites. To get more reliable rock quality data from electrical resistivity, it needs a lot of test and study on correlation of resistivity and rock quality. Firstly, we did rock property test in laboratory, such as P wave velocity, Young's modulus, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and electrical resistivity. We correlate each test results and we found out that electrical resistivity has highly related to P wave velocity, Young's modulus and UCS. Next, we accomplished electrical resistivity survey in field site and carried out electrical resistivity logging at in-situ area. We also performed rock classification, such as RQD, RMR and Q-system and we correlate electrical resistivity to RMR data. We found out that electrical resistivity logging data are highly correlate to RMR. Also we found out that electrical resistivity survey data are lower than electrical resistivity logging data when there are faults or fractures. And it cause electrical resistivity survey data to lowly correlate to RMR.
Since the occurrence of Portland cement, a great number of concrete structures were constructed. But the concrete structures have their own life times, which inevitably demand repairing treatments, especially on their surface parts. Currently many various methods have been developed and are being applied fer this purpose. In this study, a newly developed method using pneumatic chipping machine and anchor pin was adopted far repair of old concrete structure and the mechanical characteristics of cementing plane between existing and new concrete were tested. Comparing the removal methods for the decrepit part of existing concrete using pneumatic chipping machine and hydraulic breaker, the peak cohesion was higher when using chipping machine at the cementing plane. On the other hand, the residual cohesion was higher for the case of breaker. Step shaped chipping on the cementing plane was effective in increasing peak cohesion, which results 14% increase in the case of 30 mm step height and 22% in 50 mm height when compared with planar chipping plane. The use of anchor pin increased the residual cohesion, which restricted shear slip on the cementing plane after peak shear stress and the tensile strength of 32% compared with that of non-anchored case. According to the combined effect of step shaped chipping of 30 mm and anchor pin with an interval of 15 cm, the peak cohesion reached up to 77% and the residual cohesion showed 180% of the ones of the fresh concrete, respectively.
The investigation on the rock discontinuity geometry has been usually undergone by direct measurement on the rock exposures. But this sort of field work has disadvantages, which we, for example, restriction of surveying areas and consuming excessive times and labors. To cover these kinds of disadvantages, image processing could be regarded as an altemative way, with additional advantages such as automatic and objective tools when used under adequate computerized algorithm. This study was focused on the recognition of the rock discontinuities captured in the image of rock exposure by digital camera and the production of the discontinuity map automatically. The whole process was written using macro commands builtin image analyzer, ImagePro Plus. ver 4.1(Media Cybernetic). The procedure of image processing developed in this research could be divided with three steps, which are enhancement, recognition and extraction of discontinuity traces from the digital image. Enhancement contains combining and applying several filters to remove and relieve various types of noises from the image of rock surface. For the next step, recognition of discontinuity traces was executed. It used local topographic features characterized by the differences of gray scales between discontinuity and rock. Such segments of discontinuity traces extracted from the image were reformulated using an algorithm of computer decision-making criteria and linked to form complete discontinuity traces. To verify the image processing algorithms and their sequences developed in this research, discontinuity traces digitally photographed on the rock slope were analyzed. The result showed about 75~80% of discontinuities could be detected. It is thought to be necessary that the algorithms and computer codes developed in this research need to be advanced further especially in combining digital filters to produce images to be more acceptable for extraction of discontinuity traces and setting seed pixels automatically when linking trace segments to make a complete discontinuity trace.
The horizontal and vertical response spectra using the observed ground motion from the recent 5 macro earthquakes were analysed and then were compared to both the seismic design response spectra(Reg Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings(1997). 74 horizontal and 89 vertical observed ground motions, without considering soil types, were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that the horizontal MPOSD(Mean Plus One Sigma Standard Deviation) response spectra revealed much higher values for the whole frequency bands above 1 Hz than Reg. Guide(1.60). For the vertical response spectra, the results showed slightly higher than just between 7 and 8 Hz frequency band. The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Response Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that the horizontal MPOSD response spectra revealed much higher values for the whole periods below 2 second(0.5 Hz) than those of SE soil type. The vertical response spectra showed similar to the values of the Korean Standard Response Spectrum of SD soil type. These spectral values dependent on frequency could be related to characteristics of the domestic crustal attenuation and the effect of each site amplification. However, through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the conservation of horizontal seismic design response spectrum should be considered more significantly for the whole frequency bands above the 1 Hz.

The purpose of this study is the frequent traffic accidents Continuous Busan (City Freeway) around the variable speed control in the appropriate sections so that it can be done by analyzing the characteristics of traffic accidents were the severity of the accident. Highway and urban environment, the geometry of the structure because it has a lot of Curved planar point compared to wet and dry road surfaces by simulated rain wet had bom the more the speed the greater the risk of an accident was the result. Based on these results, the primary section, first urban highway tunnel, near the lamp, near Toll Plaza, near binary Outlet after considering various factors such as speed reduction is needed in the first period by conducting awareness and recognize the need for the participation of the driver and the future city installation and operation of highways in all sectors is expected to be expanded.
In a material, micro-cracks can be progressively occurred, propagated and finally lead to failure when it is subjected to cyclic or periodic loading less than its ultimate strength. This phenomenon, fatigue, is usually considered in a metal, alloy and structures under repeated loading conditions. In underground structures, a static creep behavior rather than a dynamic fatigue behavior is mostly considered. However, when compressed air is stored in a rock cavern, an inner pressure is periodically changed due to repeated in- and-out process of compressed air. Therefore mechanical properties of surrounding rock mass and an inner lining system under cyclic loading/unloading conditions should be investigated. In this study, considering an underground lined rock cavern for compressed air energy storage (CAES), the mechanical properties of a lining system, that is, concrete lining and plug under periodic loading/unloading conditions were characterized through cyclic bending tests and shear tests. From these tests, the stability of the plug was evaluated and the S-N line of the concrete lining was obtained.
Recently, mining facilities have being installed in an underground space according to a social demand for environment-friendly mine development. The underground structures for mining facilities usually requires a large volume of space with width greater than height, and thus the stability assessment of the large-scale underground mine structure is an important issue. In this study, we analysed a factor of safety based on strength reduction method, and proposed a numerical design approach to determining the dimension of underground mine structures in combination with a strength reduction method and a multivariate regression analysis. Input design parameters considered in the present study were the stress ratio and shear strength of rock mass, and the width and cover depth of underground mine structures. The stabilities of underground mine structures were assessed in terms of factor of safety under different conditions of the above input parameters. It was calculated by the strength reduction method, and several kinds of fit functions were obtained through various multivariate regression analyses. Using a best-fit regression model, we proposed the charts which provide preliminary design information on the dimension of underground mine structures.

This study investigated the exercise intensity and energy expenditure involved in two gardening activities (planting transplants and sowing seeds in a garden plot) and four common physical activities (running, skipping rope, walking, and throwing a ball) in children. Eighteen children aged 11 to 13 years (mean age, $12.3{\pm}0.7$ years) participated in this study. The children made two visits to a high tunnel in Cheongju, Chungbuk, South Korea and performed randomly selected activities. Each activity was performed for 10 min, with a 5-min rest period between activities. The children wore a Cosmed $K4b^2$ (Cosmed $K4b^2$; Cosmed, Rome, Italy), which is a portable calorimetric monitoring system, to measure indicators of metabolic cost such as oxygen uptake and energy expenditure. The children's heart rates during the activities were measured by radiotelemetry (Polar T 31; FitMed, Kempele, Finland). We found that the two gardening and four physical activities performed by the 11-13 years old children in this study were moderate-to high-intensity physical activities [i.e.,$5.4{\pm}0.7$ to $9.1{\pm}1.4$ metabolic equivalents (METs)]. Running ($9.1{\pm}1.4$ METs) and skipping rope ($8.8{\pm}1.1$ METs) were high-intensity physical activities, whereas walking ($6.1{\pm}0.9$ METs), planting transplants ($5.8{\pm}1.1$ METs), throwing a ball ($5.6{\pm}1.1$ METs), and sowing seeds ($5.4{\pm}0.7$ METs) were moderate intensity physical activities. Running and skipping rope were significantly more intense than the other activities (P < 0.0001). The gardening tasks such as planting transplants and sowing seeds in a garden plot showed similar exercise intensities and energy costs as walking and throwing a ball. This study indicates that gardening can be used as a physical activity intervention to provide health benefits similar to more common physical activities such as walking and running.

Duration induced by freeway crashes has a critical influence on traffic congestion. In general, crash duration composes detection and verification, response, and clearance time. Of these, the crash clearance time determined by a crash clearance team has attracted considerable attention in the freeway congestion management since the interest of the first two time stages faded away with increasing ubiquitous mobile phone users. The objective of this study is to identify the critical factors that affect freeway crash clearance time using a Cox's proportional hazard model. In total, 6,870 crash duration data collected from 30 major Korean freeways in 2013 were used. As a result, it was found that crashes during the night, with trailer or larger size truck, and in tunnel section contribute to increasing clearance time. Crashes associated with fatality, completed damage of crashed vehicle (s), and vehicles' fire or rollover after crash also lead to increasing clearance time. Additionally, an increase in the number of vehicles involved resulted in longer clearance time. On the other hand, crashes in the vicinity of tollgate, by passenger car, during spring, on flat section, and of car-facility type had longer clearance time. On the basis of the results, this paper suggested some strategic plans and mitigation measures to reduce crash clearance time on Korean freeway systems.
