  • When a strong electric field is applied between a sharply curved electrode and a blunt surface, the corona may result in a gas movement in the electrode gap which is directed toward the blunt surface. That is called the corona wind. It enhances heat and mass transfer between the surface and the surrounding gas. Moreover such enhancement causes no noise or vibration, which can be applied in complex, isolated geometries, and allows simple control of surface temperatures. This paper examines the relationship between the corona wind and the relative humidity. The facility consists of high voltage power supply thin tungsten wire, plate electrode, multimeter, microammeter and flow meter. Gas velocity is a linear function of voltage, relative humidity and is proportional to the square root of the current. The maximum velocities for the positive and negative corona discharge are 1.9 m/s (2.74 CMM/m), 1.5 m/s(2.15 CMM/m), respectively.

  • The dissolution characteristic of metal shows the different tendency according to the applied electrical potential, the kind of electrolyte and pH value, etc. In the micro electrochemical machining (ECM), unfavorable oxide/passive layer formation and overall corrosion of electrodes must be prevented. The anodic polarization curve of nickel has distinct three dissolution regions, i.e. two active regions and the transpassive dissolution region. In this paper, the stable electrode potentials of workpiece and tool were determined in sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid solution, respectively. In each solution, different machining property was shown and possible electrochemical reactions were discussed. On the basis of this experiment, the methodology to obtain the proper electrode potential was suggested.

  • Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is commonly used in industries that require airtightness, watertightness, oiltightness, and precision. It is a non-consumable welding method that is commonly used for the welding of non-ferrous metals, but it can be used to weld most metals. The methods of TIG welding can be divided into three types. The first, manual welding is done directly on the metal by a welder with a torch. The second, semi-automatic welding, gets help from a material supplying machine, but it is conducted by a welder. Lastly, automated welding is conducted fully by a machine during its process and operation. Depending on the selection of electrode, the amount of heat that is applied to the base material and the electrode rod changes and makes the shape of welded parts different. A direct-current positive electrode was used for this study. Through the change of shielding gas type on a structural steel (SS-400) that is commonly used in industry, the composition and shape changes in welded parts were detected after welding. The heat-affected area, hardness value, and tensile strength were also identified through hardness testing and tensile testing. In this study, it was found that the higher hardness value of the heat-affected is, the weaker the tensile strength becomes.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of electrode pattern design on the thermal shock resistance and temperature uniformity of a ceramic heater. A cordierite substrate with a low thermal expansion coefficient was fabricated by tape casting, and a tungsten electrode was printed and used as a heating element. The temperature distribution of the ceramic heater was calculated by a finite-element method (FEM) by considering various electrode patterns, and the tensile stress distribution due to the thermal stress was calculated. In the electrode pattern with a single-line width, the central part of the ceramic heater was heated to the maximum temperature, and the position of the ceramic heater having a double-line width was changed to the maximum temperature, depending on the position of the minimum line width pattern. The highest tensile stress was found along the edges of the ceramic heater. The temperature gradient at the edge determined the tensile stress intensity. The smallest tensile stress was observed for electrode pattern D, which was expected to be advantageous in resisting thermal shock failures in ceramic heaters.

  • For hazardous air pollutants(HAP) such as NO and $NO_{2}$ decomposition efficiency, power consumption, and applied voltage were investigated by SPCP(surface induced discharge plasma chemical processing) reactor to obtain optimum process variables and maximum decomposition efficiencies. Decomposition efficiency of HAP with various electric frequencies(5~50 kHz), flow rates(100~1,000 mL/min), initial concentrations(100~1,000 ppm), electrode materials(W, Cu, Al), electrode thickness(1, 2, 3 mm) and number of electrode windings(7, 9, 11) were measured. Experimental results showed that for the frequency of 10 kHz, the highest decomposition efficiency of 94.3 % for NO and 84.7 % for $NO_{2}$ were observed at the power consumptions of 19.8 and 20W respectively and that decomposition efficiency decreased with increasing frequency above 20 kHz. Decomposition efficiency was increased with increasing residence times and with decreasing initial concentration of pollutants. Decomposition efficiency was increased with increasing thickness of discharge electrode and the highest decomposition efficiency was obtained for the electrode diameter of 3 mm in this experiment. As the electrode material, decomposition efficiency was in order : tungsten(W), copper(Cu), aluminum(Al).

  • To clarify the relations of optical properties to the main factors responsible for the loss and damage of luminous efficacy, a 20 min turn-on/turn-off test for 2,000 h for a ceramic metal halide lamp is conducted. The corrosion rates of the arc tube wall and electrode are estimated based on thermal stress. Wall blackening is attributed to the tungsten being transported from the hot electrode tips to the relatively cold arc tube wall. Furthermore, the grain boundaries of the arc tube are changed by the degradation. Distortion of the electrode is observed, and the ignition and the driving voltage of the load both increase. Finally, the color rendering index and the color coordinates are changed after the degradation. The luminous flux and the intensity of the luminous distribution are decreased significantly.

  • TIG welding process is applied for the active metal such as aluminum and titanium, also sometimes for overlay welding of superalloy. However the welding speed to be applied is very low because of the unstable bead formed in the region of high current and high welding speed. The present study was carried out to examine the basic phenomena of high speed TIG melt run welding by the 2% Th - W electrode(dia.3.2mm) of various tip shapes.

  • In the WSi2/CVD-Si/SiO2 polycide structure, electrode resistance and its property were studied as a function of deposition temperature and thickness of CVD-Si, diffusion condition of POCl3, and WSi2 being deposited or not. Resistivity of poly-Si is decreased with increment of thickness in the case of POCl3 diffusion of low sheet resistance, but it is increased in the case of high sheet resistance. The resistivity of amorphous-Si is generally lower than that of poly-Si. Initial sheet resistance of poly-Si/WSi2 gate electrode is affected by the thickness and resistance of poly-Si layer, but final resistance after anneal, 900$^{\circ}C$/30min/N2, is only determined by WSi2 layer. Flourine diffuses into SiO2, but tungsten does not. In spite of out-diffusion of phosphorus into WSi2 layer, the sheet resistance is not changed.

  • PtRu alloy and $PtRu-WO_3$ nanocomposite thin-film electrodes for methanol electrooxidation were fabricated by means of a sputtering method. The structural and electrochemical properties of well-defined PtRu alloy thin-film electrodes were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The alloy thin-film electrodes were classified as follows: Pt-based and Ru-based alloy structure. Based on structural and electrochemical understanding of the PtRu alloy thin-film electrodes, the well-controlled physical and (electro)chemical properties of $PtRu-WO_3$, showed superior specific current to that of a nanosized PtRu alloy catalyst, The homogeneous dispersion of alloy catalyst and well-formed nanophase structure would lead to an excellent catalytic electrode reaction for high-performance fuel cells. In addition, the enhanced catalytic activity in nanocomposite electrode was found to be closely related to proton transfer in tungsten oxide using in-situ electrochemical transmittance measurement.

  • The effects of additive ions on the generation of metallic nanoparticles were evaluated using a corona induced supersonic nozzle. Applying the corona discharge to the nanoparticle generator, a tungsten needle and the supersonic nozzle are used as an anode electrode and a cathode electrode respectively. The corona ions act as nuclei for the silver vapor condensation. The ion density was controlled precisely as varying the applied voltage between electrode and nozzle. The mean diameter of the silver particle decreases as the ion density increases. However, the number concentration of the silver particle tended to increase with the ion density. The size distribution is more uniform as the ion density increases.
