  • Effectiveness of a 3-pass plate finned-tube heat exchanger is calculated using heat exchangelet method by changing the shape of fin and the arrangement of tubes. The alternative refrigerant R134a is taken in this study. Conduction between neighboring tubes along the fin is taken into account in addition to convection between the fin and the surrounding air. Governing equations are obtained by using energy balance in a small control volume containing a tube and fins. They are numerically solved following the tube. Effect of tube-to-tube conduction is investigated in single-phase and two-phase flows with various fin shapes and arrangements of tubes. Improvement of effectiveness by fin perforation is studied too. The results shows that perforating fins, increasing the number of tubes, and increasing the distance between neighboring tubes at the same fin area enhance the effectiveness.

  • Immobilized sensor spots were applied for online measurement of dissolved $O_2$, in test tubes. Oxygen transport was quantified at varied shaking frequency and filling volumes. The k$_{L}$ a increased with increasing shaking frequency and decreasing filling volume. In non-baffled tubes the maximum $k_{L}a$ value was $70h^{-1}$, equivalent to a maximum $O_2$ transfer capacity of 15mMh^{-1}$. Monitoring of the hydrodynamic profile revealed that the liquid bulk rotated inside the tube with an inclined liquid surface, whereby the angle between the surface and tube wall increased with increasing shaking frequency. The $k_{L}a$ clearly correlated to the surface area. Placement of four baffles into the tubes improved the oxygen transfer up to 3-fold. The highest increase in $k_{L}a$ was observed at high filling volume and high shaking frequency. The maximum $k_{L}a$ in baffled tubes was $100 h^{-1}$.

  • There has been extensive experience associated with the operation of SGs wherein it was believed, based on NDE, that throughwall tube indications were present within the tubesheet. The installation of the SG tubes usually involves the development of a short interference fit, referred to as the tack expansion, at the bottom of the tubesheet. The tack expansion was usually effected by a hard rolling process and thereafter, in most instance, by the expansion of a urethane plug inserted into the tube end and compressed in the axial direction. The rolling process by its very nature is considered to be intensive with regard to metalworking at the inside surface of the tube and would be expected to lead to higher residual surface stresses. Alternate repair criteria(ARC) in the tack expansion area have been developed and applied to nuclear power plants in USA, however domestic nuclear power plants have not applied ARC for tubes in tubeheet area yet. In consideration of the degradation characteristics of tubes in the Steam Generator tubesheet, this paper suggests ARC application for tubes in the steam generator tubesheet of the domestic nuclear power plants in order to assure life time of the steam generator as well as nuclear power plants.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of the micro-fin tubes before and after the tube-expansion process. Test tubes are single-grooved micro-fin tubes made of copper with an outer diameter of 9.52 mm before the tube-expansion. The direct heating method is applied in order to make the refrigerant evaporated in the micro-fin tubes. The test ranges of the heat flux, mass flux, and the saturation pressure are 5 to 15kW/$m^2$, 100 to 200 kg/$m^2s$ and 540 to 790 kPa, respectively. The effects of the mass flux, heat flux, and the saturation pressure of the refrigerant on the pressure drop and the heat transfer are presented for the refrigerant R22. In the test conditions of this study, the heat transfer coefficient for the micro-fin tube after the tube-expansion is about 16.5% smaller than that before the tube-expansion because the fin height of micro-fin is reduced and the fin shape becomes flatter. The micro-fin tube after the tube-expansion has about 7.7% greater average pressure drop than that before the tube-expansion process.

  • When materials such as metal are into the secondary side of steam generator, they, so called foreign objects, may have influences on the integrity of the steam generator tubes. They cause the tube wear due to the relative motion between the tubes and foreign objects and the tube impact due to flow. The best way to avoid the effects is to remove all the foreign objects. However, it is not easy to remove the foreign materials thoroughly due to their condition such as the location. Considering the wear and impact by the foreign materials, KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Research Institute) developed the methodology to evaluate the foreign materials analytically. This methodology was described with a computer program in order to obtain the fast results. The program informs whether the tubes have the structural integrity when the foreign material strikes the tubes. Moreover, this gives us the remaining life of the steam generator tubes. In this paper, the program, which evaluates the effects of the foreign objects in the secondary side of steam generator, is introduced.

  • This paper reports the experimental results on heat transfer characteristics of R-22 and R-407C(HFC-32/125/134a 23/25/52 wt%) condensing inside horizontal smooth and finned tubes. The test condensers used In the study are double pipe heat exchangers of 7.5 mm ID, 9.5 mm OD smooth tube, and 60 finned micro-fin tube with 8.53 mm ID, 9.53 mm OD. Each of these tubes was 4 000 mm long tubes connected with an U-bend. These U type two-path test tubes are divided In 8 local test sections for the identification of the local condensing heat transfer characterisitcs and pressure drop, U-bend effects on condensing flows. Inlet quality is maintained 1.0, and refrigerant mass velocity is varied from 102.0 to $301.0kg/m^2{\cdot}s$. From the results, it was found that the pressure drop of the R-407C Increased, and heat transfer coefficient decreased compared to those of R-22. In comparison condensing heat transfer characteristics of micro-fm tube with those of smooth tube, increasing of condensing heat transfer coefficient was found outstanding compared to the increasing ratio of pressure drop. Furthermore, pressure drop In U-bend showed at most a 30 % compared to the total pressure drop in the test section.

  • Operating experience of steam generators has shown that cracks of various morphology frequently occur in the steam generator tubes. These cracked tubes can stay in service if it is proved that the tubes have sufficient safety margin to preclude the risk of burst and leak. Therefore, integrity assessment using exact limit load solutions is very important for safe operation of the steam generators. This paper provides global and local limit load solutions for surface cracks in the steam generator tubes. Such solutions are developed based on three-dimensional (3-D) finite element analyses assuming elastic-perfectly plastic material behavior. For the crack location, both axial and circumferential surface cracks, and for each case, both external and internal cracks are considered. The resulting global and local limit load solutions are given in polynomial forms, and thus can be simply used in practical integrity assessment of the steam generator tubes.

  • The twin impulse wave leads to very complicated flow fields, such as Mach stem, spherical waves, and vortex ring. The twin impulse wave discharged from the exits of the two tubes placed in parallel is investigated to understand detailed flow physics associated with the twin impulse wave, compared with those in a single impulse wave. In the current study, the merging phenomena and propagation characteristics of the impulse waves are investigated using a shock tube experiment and by numerical computations. The Harten-Yee's total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme is used to solve the unsteady, two-dimensional, compressible, Euler equations. The Mach number $M_{s}$, of incident shock wave is changed below 1.5 and the distance between two-parallel tubes, L/d, is changed from 1.2 to 4.0. In the shock tube experiment, the twin impulse waves are visualized by a Schlieren optical system for the purpose of validation of computational work. The results obtained show that on the symmetric axis between two parallel tubes, the peak pressure produced by the twin-impulse waves and its location strongly depend upon the distance between two parallel tubes, L/d and the incident shock Mach number, $M_{s}$. The predicted Schlieren images represent the measured twin-impulse wave with a good accuracy.

  • Nine tubes with trapezoidal integral-fins having fin densities from 748 to 1654fpm and 10,30 grooves and finned tubes with caves of 0.55 and 0.64mm height respectively are tested. A plain tube having same diameter as the finned tubes is also tested for comparison. In case of condensation CFC-11 condensates at saturation state of 32$^{\circ}C$ on the outside surface cooled by inside cooling water flows. And in case of boiling the refrigerant evaporates at a saturation state of 1bar on the outside tube surface and heat is supplied by hot water which circulates inside of the tube. The tube having fin density of 1299fpm and 30grooves has the best condensation overall heat transfer coefficient. However, as far as boiling heat transfer coefficient concerns, fin tubes with cave show higher value than low fin tube having fin density of 1299fpm and 30 grooves.

  • The nuclear steam generator is composed of a bundle of tubes. The length of these tubes is very long, but their diameter is small. Fluid exists inside of the steam generator and its flow causes vibration, therefore these tubes are supported by anti-vibration bars. The wear damage due to the vibration is known as fretting wear, which should be minimized to ensure the safety of the plants. Research needs to be done about decreasing the amount of fretting wear. Hard coatings have proven to be very effective in reducing the amount of wear. The commercial coatings of TiN and CrN have excellent wear resistance and are used to protect the Inconel tube from fretting wear. The tube-on-flat type tester was used for conducting the fretting wear tests. It was found that the wear amounts of the coated tubes decreased depending on the coating thickness. CrN was found to be very effective in reducing the wear, while the wear amounts were dependent on the coating thickness in the case of TiN and a thick coating of TiN was very effective on wear resistance.
