  • This paper investigates the nature of the discourse domain involved with focus sentences. The major theories of focus including Roothian Alternative Semantics are critically reviewed: Alternative Semantics takes a contradictory attitude toward the truth conditional aspect of free focus. The truth conditional differences are treated as a pragmatic inference, while they are captured by the semantic mechanism, that is, the alternative sets generated by focus constructions. In addition, the alternative sets are ad hoc since they are generated only for focus constructions. This paper attempts to show that the alternative sets introduced by foci in the framework of Alternative Semantics are neither necessary nor sufficient for an analysis of focus. It is argued that the domain sets simply provided by the model itself suffices for a proper analysis of focus constructions.

  • This paper presents radar remote sensing of soil moisture and surface roughness for vegetated surfaces. A precise volume scattering model for a vegetated surface is derived based on the first-order radiative transfer technique. At first, the scattering mechanisms of the scattering model are analyzed for various conditions of the vegetation canopies. Then, the scattering model is simplified step by step for developing an appropriate inversion algorithm. For verifying the scattering model and the inversion algorithm, the polarimetric backscattering coefficients at 1.85 GHz, as well as the ground truth data, of a tall-grass field are measured for various soil moisture conditions. The genetic algorithm is employed in the inversion algorithm for retrieving soil moisture and surface roughness from the radar measurements. It is found that the scattering model agrees quite well with the measurements. It is also found that the retrieved soil moisture and surface roughness parameters agree well with the field-measured ground truth data.

  • Monocular depth estimation helps the robot to understand the surrounding environments in 3D. Especially, deep-learning-based monocular depth estimation has been widely researched, because it may overcome the scale ambiguity problem, which is a main issue in classical methods. Those learning based methods can be mainly divided into three parts: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and semi-supervised learning. Supervised learning trains the network from dense ground-truth depth information, unsupervised one trains it from images sequences and semi-supervised one trains it from stereo images and sparse ground-truth depth. We describe the basics of each method, and then explain the recent research efforts to enhance the depth estimation performance.

  • The doctrinal ideas within Daesoon thought are based on the faith of Daesoonjinrihoe (The Fellowship of the Truth of the Great Itineration), which is grounded upon the Jeongyung, the official scripture of the religious order. Today the religious order is faced with the problem of how to develop and deepen the study of Daesoon doctrine. If this project is carried out successfully, a theory would be presented that would provide not only a firm foundation for their religious work, but also systematic research of Daesoon doctrine necessary for greater understanding by people of other cultures and religions. The field of Daesoon studies has emerged along with the development of the Daesoon religious order, as research was initially carried out by the Institute at the Daesoon headquarters. More recent research has been undertaken by Daejin University and The Inter-Academic Society in Korea. What is needed now is to evaluate the findings of the research, which will be instrumental in focusing the vision of the religious order within the context of Daesoon thought.

  • This research note aims to provide a critical understanding of "tourist stupidity" and "exclusiveness" within the smart tourism domain and to propose a corresponding qualitative research agenda. It argues that qualitative research methodologies are too infrequently applied, leading to a paradox evident in smart tourism studies. Accordingly, it suggests that embracing a qualitative perspective is essential to diversify the scholarly discourse and promote advanced inquiry in the field of smart tourism. It further seeks to contribute to ongoing debates by focusing on umbrella terms, such as "tourist stupidity" and "exclusiveness," for a more nuanced and holistic understanding of smart tourism and proposes a research agenda that advocates a re-evaluation of qualitative approaches.

  • Truth, goodness, and beauty are originated from the Greek philosophy and these concepts are unified by Kant. This article shows that these three concepts correspond to three conditions of axiomatics, that is, consistency, completeness, and independence, respectively.

A Logical Critique of Criticism and Anticriticism of Lee Yeung-Hi (리영희 비판과 반비판의 논리적 비판: '북한맹.시장맹' 논쟁을 중심으로)

  • Lee Yeung-Hi is one of the most influential journalist in the modern history of Korea. Nevertheless, the judgement about him has been parallelized by opposite sides. He is called 'the Master of ideology', while the other calls him 'the culprit of theorization'. This thesis deduced the contemporary meaning of person Lee Yeung-Hi in order to promote communication for both sides. I compared their logical arguments and pointed out the error they missed. Also, I clarified that the criticism and anticriticism for Lee Young-Hi in the fields of both journalism and academia have fallacies, such as the fallacy of straw man, and the fallacy of question-begging. I criticized their arguments through the view of 'struggling to seek truth', which is the core value of Lee Yeung-Hi's thought. The necessity of communication between advocators and it's critics is due to the condition of Korean Journalism. Korean Journalism does not have much space to accept Lee Young-Hi in only one side. Paradoxically, the contemporary meaning of the truth that Journalist Lee Young-Hi had sought is profound and deep because of the condition where Korean Journalism is being dominated by political parallelism.

  • The previous study has assumed that dialogue and debate could not have been activated by the hierachical Confucian norm and political authoritarianism in Korean society. Political democracy has developed in Korean society since 1987. But many observers have pointed out that the culture of debate still remained undeveloped in Korean society. This study assumes that the key factor of determining the quantity and frequency of debate is the polilitical factor such as authoritarianism, but the determining one of qualitative dimension such as debate competence derived from the epistemological tradition. In order to ascertian this hypothesis, this study explored the epistemological basis of Confucian thoughts in comparison with the classical Greek thoughts. In classical Greek society, philosophers considered that the purpose of debate is to find and to ascertain the truth. Bur Confucian scholors didn't look upon questioning the truth. Instead they considered practicing or doing of the truth worthful. Therefore, in a society which were much influenced by the Confucian thought, the culture of debate could not have been developed.

  • Hilbert's rational ambition to establish consistency in Number theory and mathematics in general was frustrated by the fact that the statement itself claiming consistency is undecidable within its formal system by $G\ddot{o}del's$ second theorem. Hilbert's optimism that a mathematician should not say "Ignorabimus" ("We don't know") in any mathematical problem also collapses, due to the presence of a undecidable statement that is neither provable nor refutable. The failure of his program receives more shock, because his system excludes any ambiguity and is based on only mechanical operations concerning signs and strings of signs. Above all, $G\ddot{o}del's$ theorem demonstrates the limits of formalization. Now, the notion of provability in the dimension of syntax comes to have priority over that of semantic truth in mathematics. In spite of his failure, the notion of algorithm(mechanical processe) made a direct contribution to the emergence of programming languages. Consequently, we believe that his program is failure, but a great one.
