  • The traditional trip-based modeling approach has assumed that a trip is generated for a purpose. However, the approach has not considered trips as a set of connected trips nor has it considered trip chaining. The purpose of this study is to identify general characteristics of trip chaining, and to explore relationships between trip purposes and trip chains using multivariate regression models. The data for this study come from the 2006 Seoul household travel diary survey. It is found that simple trip chains are dominant phenomena, and socio-economic characteristics such as occupation, income, age, and gender are closely related to types of trip chains. People aged less than 20, females, or high-income people are more likely to have a higher number of home-based trip chains. In addition, commute and school trips for workers and students respectively tend to be strongly associated with simple trip chains, while shopping and leisure trips for housewives tend to be related to simple trip chains.

  • The domestic 30AFs that are currently being produced show many problems due to different instantaneous trip characteristics in case of short-circuit. The troubles may cause explosion by excessive short-circuit capacities and arc emission, which results in a wide range of blackout. The function and safety of the low voltage circuit breakers installed before the end load are very important. This paper presents an idea on the safety improvement of the low voltage circuit-breakers through the analysis of instantaneous trip characteristics of domestic 30AF circuit-breakers.

  • As the steel plates used for automobile safety the TRIP-assisted multiphase steels are being introduced to automobile industry with respect to their remarkable mechanical properties for the combination of high strength and large elongation. This multiphase structure is generated by two stage heat treatment (intercritical annealing & isothermal treatment) The metastable retained austenite can be transformed to martensite when plastically deformed which results in TRIP effect. Actually the microstructure of TRIP-assisted steels consist of a fine dispersite. There present discussion deals with bainite reaction kinetics of austenite in the process o f two stage heat treatment. In relation to bainite transformation the characteristics of bainite reaction is found to be influenced by the bainite tempering temperature and also by the relative rate in which carbides precipitate within residual austenite.

  • Single-person households in the Seoul Metropolitan Area have increased sharply during recent 20-30 years. Despite of decreasing in the total population, the number of single-person household is predicted to increase continuously. However, the effect of single-person household growth on the domestic transport sector has not been studied concretely. In this study, the differences on trip generation characteristics by household size and attributes were figured out by analyzing Seoul Metropolitan Area Household Travel Behavior Survey (SMA-HTBS). Firstly, trip generation rates (trips/day/person) were produced by household attribute, household member attribute and trip attribute based on SMA-HTBS. Secondly, trip generation rate of single-person household and that of multi-person (2 or more) household were compared by significance test. It was found that trips generation characteristics of single-person household is quite different from those of multi-person household by housing type, residential type, living area, and transport mode. The result of this paper is expected to contribute developing more sophisticated trip generation model and transport policy reflecting trip generation characteristics of single-person household.

  • In this study, three cold-rolled TRIP steels containing different Al content (0.04wt%, 1.0 wt.% and 2.00wt%) were fabricated to understand the complex effects of Al in TRIP steel. The influences of Al on microstructural evolution of cold-rolled TRIP steels have been analyzed by using advanced analysis techniques, such as transmission electron microscope (TEM) and three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT). TEM results revealed that second phases such as bainte and retained austenite decrease with increase of Al content. In addition, 3D-APT was used to characterize atomic-scale distribution of alloying elements at the constituent phases. Through these analysis techniques, the advanced characteristics of constituent microstructure in TRIP steels were identified depending on Al contents in TRIP steels.

  • In this study, microstructure and distribution of alloy elements were investigated in thermo-mechanically processed C-Mn-Si transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steels. The microstructures of TRIP steels were investigated by using advanced analysis techniques, such as three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT). At first, the microstructure was observed by using TEM. TEM results revealed that microstructure of C-Mn-Si TRIP steel was composed of ferrite, bainte, and retained austenite. 3D-APT was used to characterize atomic-scale partitioning of added elements at the phase interface. In the retained austenite phase, Ti and B were enriched with C. However, there was no fluctuation of Mn and Si concentration across the interface. Through these analysis techniques, the advanced characteristics of constituent microstructure in C-Mn-Si TRIP steels were identified.

  • This paper analyzes the characteristics of trip chaining activities of elderly and explores temporal and spatial distribution. The research also estimates ordered probit model and binary logistic model to investigate various factors affecting trip chaining and mode choice patterns. We utilized household survey data for elderly conducted in 2006 and 2010 in Seoul metropolitan area. Research results indicate that trip chaining showed an increasing trend and simple trip chaining counts for more than 85%. GIS mapping expressed spatial distribution of trip departure and arrival areas, particularly showing regional changes in job-related trips. We also found that more factors influence trip chaining in 2010, compared with 2006, and travel cost is more sensitive than travel time in determining travel mode. The research contributes to establish transportation policies based on travel behavior of elderly in a upcoming super-aged society.

  • Trip generation is the first step in the conventional four-step model and has great effects on overall demand forecasting, so accuracy really matters at this stage. A linear regression model is widely used as a current trip generation model for such plans as urban transportation and SOC facilities, assuming that the relationship between each socio-economic index and trip generation stays linear. But when rapid urban development or an urban planning structure has changed, socio-economic index data for trip estimation may be lacking to bring many errors in estimated trip. Hence, instead of assuming that a socio-economic index widely used for a general purpose, this study aims to develop a new trip generation model by type based on the market separation for the variables to reflect the characteristics of various zones. The study considered the various characteristics (land use, socio-economic) of zones to enhance the forecasting accuracy of a trip generation model, the first-step in forecasting transportation demands. For a market separation methodology to improve forecasting accuracy, data mining (CART) on the basis of trip generation was used along with a regression analysis. Findings of the study indicated as follows : First, the analysis of zone characteristics using the CART analysis showed that trip production was under the influence of socio-economic factors (men-women relative proportion, age group (22 to 29)), while trip attraction was affected by land use factors (the relative proportion of business facilities) and the socio-economic factor (the relative proportion of third industry workers). Second, model development by type showed as a result that trip generation coefficients revealed 0.977 to 0.987 (trip/person) for "production" 0.692 to 3.256 (trip/person) for "attraction", which brought the necessity for type classifications. Third, a measured verification was conducted, where "production" and "attraction" showed a higher suitability than the existing model. The trip generation model by type developed in this study, therefore, turned out to be superior to the existing one.

  • Fall accident is the most frequent accident type of occupational accidents. As the age of workers increases, trip and fall accident increases more than other types of occupational accident in the middle-aged group. In this study, the gait characteristics of 25 middle-aged participants (mean ages 47.4, S.D. 5.8) were studied to analyze the trip and fall risks. The Minimum toe clearance(MTC) against the floor surface was measured in the variable conditions of gait speed by a motion capture system. In the 50s age group, the MTC decreased and the MTC tended to reduce the variation with increasing walking speed in the level walking. Therefore, the trip and fall risks for the 50s age group is higher than the 40s age group. Especially, the faster walking speed will increase the trip and fall risks even more.
