  • Since the 1980s, the western welfare states have experienced a wide spectrum of socio-economic changes; changes in population composition, the economic globalization, the post-industrialization, an increasing flexibility in the labor market. etc. This study examines the trend of poverty in welfare states, and analyzes how those socio-economic changes are related to it. For these purposes, this study first calculates the poverty indices for several years in 10 welfare states using the Luxembourg Income Study database, and then decomposes the index by subpopulation and income sources. Major findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First of all, the welfare state in general has experienced an increasing trend in the degree of poverty since the 1980s. In particular, poverty has greatly intensified in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Many other welfare states including Canada, Germany, Sweden, and Norway have also experienced substantial increases in poverty. The increasing trend of poverty is not wholly due to changes in population composition such as increases in the aging population and one-parent(mother) families. Contrary to the traditional belief, these population groups are not as much poor as the working-age population. In particular, the degree of poverty in the elderly is less severe than in the working-age group. Furthermore, since the 1980s the market income poverty in the aging population has shown a decreasing trend in many welfare states. The degree and trend of poverty in one-parent families vary greatly across countries, owing to the labor market and income transfer policies. The most important reason for the increasing poverty trend in the welfare state is that the degree of poverty has been deepening in the working-age population. Especially, the market income poverty of the working-age population has considerably increased in every country except the Netherlands. Structural changes in the economy and the labor market may drive the increasing trend of poverty. Further studies and deliberate anti-poverty policies are needed to tackle the factors relating to the increase in the market income poverty.

  • According to the unified model of AGNs, type 1 and 2 AGNs are intrinsically the same objects but seem different due to an obscuring matter which can block lights from the central engine of the AGN depending on the viewing angle. The obscuring object is thought to be shaped in a toroidal form and thus the geometry of tori of AGNs is an important factor to determine the fraction of type 1 (or type 2) AGNs. Oh et al. (2015) provides a new catalog of type 1 AGNs from SDSS DR7 in the nearby universe (z < 0.2) and it contains nearly 50% more type 1 AGNs than previously known. Using this new catalog, we test the fraction of type 1 AGNs along the black hole mass (MBH) and the bolometric luminosity of AGNs (Lbol), which are regarded as key parameters of the AGNs. First of all, because the methods to derive the black hole mass and the bolometric luminosity bear uncertainties, we test how the different methods lead to different values of type 1 fraction. We found that the fraction of type 1 AGNs varies with both MBH and Lbol. The extensively-studied, "receding torus model" can only explain the trend along Lbol and hence fails to explain the trend. To understand the new trend, we test the geometry of the torus based on the "clumpy torus model". We present our results on the basic properties of the torus such as a column density or opening angle and compare with those from previous studies based on other wavelengths (e.g. Infrared or X-ray).

  • This study intends to discover characteristics and methods of retro image wedding dresses by analyzing prior studies about retro characteristics. The characteristics of retro image wedding dresses are as follows: 'Recreative Retro', Trend revival Retro', 'Nostalgic Retro' and 'Remixed Retro'. The expressional characteristics and methods of each character are as follows. The 'Recreated Retro' has been recreated in the wedding dresses worn by celebrities, actresses' wedding dresses in movies, and also in the famous designer's high end wedding dresses. These dresses do not merely duplicate the originals, but also reflect images, which were reproduced by combining modern technology. The 'Trend revival Retro' emerged as a combination of past fashion styles and new trends. It seems to stimulate the customers' reminiscence of past fashion trends and create unique designs through expressing the metaphor or the adaptation of past fashion styles. The 'Nostalgic Retro' started from the discovery of emotional values for something old or the inclination to be attracted to old styles. It has been expressed through design concepts with natural themes. The 'Remixed Retro' is from recombination of Retro elements. It is shown as a new interpretative code which explains how current time blends with different times.

  • The glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) have been considered risk factors for breast cancer, but association studies of breast cancer risk using simple GI and GL might be affected by confounding effects of the overall diet. A total of 357 cases and 357 age-matched controls were enrolled, and dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) with 103 food items. GI and GL dietary patterns were derived by reduced rank regression (RRR) method. The GI and GL pattern scores were positively associated with breast cancer risk among postmenopausal women [OR (95%CI): 3.31 (1.06-10.39), p for trend=0.031; 9.24 (2.93-29.14), p for trend<0.001, respectively], while the GI pattern showed no statistically significant effects on breast cancer risk, and the GL pattern was only marginally significant, among premenopausal women (p for trend=0.043). The GI and GL pattern scores were positively associated with the risk of breast cancer in subgroups defined by hormone receptor status in postmenopausal women. The GI and GL patterns based on all food items consumed were positively associated with breast cancer.

  • The construction industry is very important to supply the facilities and infrastructure in Korea. However, the images of construction industry are negative in actual. In addition, the studies to improve the images of construction industry up to now have a limitation to research the images about that time. So, in this study, the authors examined and analyzed the peoples' trend changes of the images of construction industry with time. The results showed that the positive images of construction industry about the contribution to national economy and the future prospect are diminished. And it is revealed that the negative images of construction industry about the morality are decreased, too. The authors proposed the strategies to improve the images of construction industry by the based on these results.

  • Nanomaterial have grown from scientific interest to commercial products and the nanomaterial market has grown 19.1 % each year. As the nanomaterial market size increases, it is expected that nanomaterial production will increase and its contamination of outdoor environmental system will also increase in the form of industrial waste. Since most of nanomaterials are known as biologically non-degradable materials, nanomaterials will accumulate in the environment, and this will increase the potential threats to human health along the food chain. Recent studies have investigated the toxicity effect of nanomaterials due to their size, chemical composition and shape. For the development of nanomaterial while taking human health into consideration, a nanomaterial detecting sensor is required. In this paper, we have observed the trend of nanomaterial detecting sensor of mechanical, electrochemical, optical and kelvin probe force microscopy sensors and we believe that this trend will shed the light on the development of real-life nanomaterial detecting sensors.

  • This paper studied why middle-aged group is using active wear as casual wear. First, we can think of 'comfort', 'ideal body shape', 'trend', 'functionality', 'economy' for the reasons. We categorized the incentives as 'comfort/functionality pursuits', 'trend/economy pursuits', and 'ideal body shape pursuits'. Studies showed that statistically significant number of men pursue comfort and functionality, and statically significant number of women pursue trend and economy. Second, this study shows that the number of consumers who use the active wear in daily lives is greater than that of those who use it only for outdoor activities. The difference was statistically significant in T-shirts and pants. The most frequent usage was in social activities, and the next frequent usage was in cultural activities. The reason is that currently, middle-aged consumers are actively participating in social gatherings than any other activities. Especially, considering that the men wear active wear more than the women do, development of the product as men's casual wear that is compatible with other apparels will be necessary. We expect this study will be used as the preliminary data for a marketing strategy targeting the middle-ages.

  • In recent years, 'technological fusion or convergence' has drawn a lot of attention of innovation researchers and governmental policy makers as the driving force of technological innovation and industrial growth. There are, however, few studies on the analysis of longitudinal trends of technological convergence and its comparison between global and national level. In this study, with the citation data of about 18 million articles, we analyzed 1) the growth of representative convergence research areas, 2) the convergence of citing patterns between research fields, and 3) the changing trend of diversity index of all research fields. We conclude that technological convergence in korea shows the relatively strong orientation to the combination of neighboring fields than that of heterogenous fields in comparison to global trend. In particular, the relatively weak activity of cognitive science and the low level of mutual exchange between arts/humanities/social sciences and natural/engineering sciences in Korea are emphasized.
