  • In this paper, we propose a new preorder tree method for binary images, named the Compact Complementary Quadtree (CCQ). In the proposed method we use type codes for representing nodes in the quadtree instead of using the symbols G, B, and W. From the experimental results, we have confirmed that the CCQ has a higher compression ratio than of the DF-expression. CCQ can be effectively applied to progressive transmission of binary images such as line drawings, geographical maps, and halftones.

  • This paper proposes an efficient collision detection method in the dynamic spatial subdivisions for the MMORPG engine which requires realtime interactions. An octree is a suitable structure for static scenes or terrain processing. An octree spatial subdivision enhances rendering speed of scenes. Current spatial subdivisions tend to be highly optimized for efficient traversal, but are difficult to update quickly for a changing geometry. When an object moves to the outside extent for the spatial subdivisions, the acceleration structure would normally have to be rebuilt. The OSP based on a tree is used to divide dynamically wide outside which is the subject of 3D MMORPG. TBV does not reconstruct all tree nodes of OSP and has reduced rebuilding times by TBV information of a target node. A collision detection is restricted to those objects contained in the visibility range of sight by using the information established in TBV. We applied the HBV and ray tracing for an efficient collision detection.

  • Location based Services in the ubiquitous computing environment, namely u-LBS, use very large and skewed spatial objects that are closely related to locational information. It is especially essential to achieve fast search, which is looking for POI(Point of Interest) related to the location of users. This paper examines how to search large and skewed POI efficiently in the u-LBS environment. We propose the Dynamic-level Grid based R-Tree(DGR-Tree), which is an index for point data that can reduce the cost of stationary POI search. DGR-Tree uses both R-Tree as a primary index and Dynamic-level Grid as a secondary index. DGR-Tree is optimized to be suitable for point data and solves the overlapping problem among leaf nodes. Dynamic-level Grid of DGR-Tree is created dynamically according to the density of POI. Each cell in Dynamic-level Grid has a leaf node pointer for direct access with the leaf node of the primary index. Therefore, the index access performance is improved greatly by accessing the leaf node directly through Dynamic-level Grid. We also propose a K-Nearest Neighbor(KNN) algorithm for DGR-Tree, which utilizes Dynamic-level Grid for fast access to candidate cells. The KNN algorithm for DGR-Tree provides the mechanism, which can access directly to cells enclosing given query point and adjacent cells without tree traversal. The KNN algorithm minimizes sorting cost about candidate lists with minimum distance and provides NEB(Non Extensible Boundary), which need not consider the extension of candidate nodes for KNN search.

  • This paper discusses how to handle incomplete data including missing values. Optimally processing the missing value means obtaining an estimate that is the closest to the original value from the information contained in the training data, and replacing the missing value with this value. The way to achieve this is to use a decision tree that is completed in the process of classifying information by the classifier. In other words, this decision tree is obtained in the process of learning by inputting only complete information that does not include loss values among all training data into the C4.5 classifier. The nodes of this decision tree have classification variable information, and the higher node closer to the root contains more information, and the leaf node forms a classification region through a path from the root. In addition, the average of classified data events is recorded in each region. Events including the missing value are input to this decision tree, and the region closest to the event is searched through a traversal process according to the information of each node. The average value recorded in this area is regarded as an estimate of the missing value, and the compensation process is completed.

  • This paper proposes an index structure which is used to process X-Path on S-XML data. There are many previous index structures based on tree structure for X-Path processing. Because of general tree index's top-down query fashion, the unnecessary node traversal makes heavy access and decreases the query processing performance. And both of the two query types for X-Path called single-path query and branching query need to be supported in proposed index structure. This method uses a combination of path summary and the node indexing. First, it manages hashing on hierarchy elements which are presented in tag in S-XML. Second, array blocks named path summary array is created in each node of hashing to store the path information. The X-Path processing finds the tag element using hashing and checks array blocks in each node to determine the path of query's result. Based on this structure, it supports both single-path query and branching path query and improves the X-Path processing performance.

  • As XML is widely used across the computer related fields, and it costs expensive for its compiler, the study on the automatic generation of the compiler is becoming important. In addition, though the XMLSchema became a standard, there have been few works on the automatic compiler generation for XML applications based on the XMLSchema. In this paper, we introduce a method that we can automatically generate a compiler for an XML application based on the XMLSchema. Our XML compiler generator uses data type information in XMLSchema document and semantic information in another file and produces semantic classes and a compiler for the XML application. The compiler parses an XML document, builds a tree in which each node is an instance of semantic class, and processes the document through the traversal of the tree.

  • A range mosaic query returns distribution of data within the query region as a pattern of mosaic, whereas a range aggregate query returns a single aggregate value of data within the query region. The range mosaic query divides a query region by a multi-dimensional grid, and calculates aggregate values of grid cells. In this paper, we propose a new type of query, range mosaic query and a new operator, mosaic-by, with which the range mosaic queries can be represented. In addition, we suggest efficient algorithms for processing range mosaic queries using an aggregate R-tree. The algorithm that we present computes aggregate results of every mosaic grid cell by one time traversal of the aggregate R-tree, and efficiently executes the queries with only a small number of node accesses by using the aggregate values of the aggregate R-tree. Our experimental study shows that the range mosaic query algorithm is reliable in terms of performance for several synthetic datasets and a real-world dataset.

  • A database sharing system (DSS) refers to a system for high performance transaction processing. In the DSS, the processing nodes are coupled via a high speed network and share a common database at the disk level. Each node has a local memory and a separate copy of operating system. To reduce the number of disk accesses, the node caches data pages and index pages in its memory buffer. In general, B-tree index pages are accessed more often and thus cached at more processing nodes, than their corresponding data pages. There are also complicated operations in the B-tree such as Fetch, Fetch Next, Insertion and Deletion. Therefore, an efficient cache consistency scheme supporting high level concurrency is required. In this paper, we propose cache consistency schemes using identifiers of index pages and page_LSN of leaf page. The propose schemes can improve the system throughput by reducing the required message traffic between nodes and index re-traversal.

  • Natural language query is the best user interface for the users of web text retrieval systems. This paper proposes a retrieval system with expanded keyword from syntactically-analyzed structures of user's natural language query based on natural language processing technique. Through the steps combining or splitting the compound nouns based on syntactic tree traversal, and expanding the other-formed or shorten-formed keyword into multiple keyword, it shows that precision and correctness of the retrieval system was enhanced.

  • For the users of information retrieval systems, natural language query is the more ideal interface, compared with keyword and boolean expressions. This paper proposes a retrieval technique with expanded keyword from syntactically-analyzed structures of natural language query as user input. Through the steps combining or splitting the compound nouns based on syntactic tree traversal of the query, and expanding the other-formed or shorten-formed into multiple keyword, it can enhance the precision and correctness of the retrieval system.
