Two wooden fish excavated from Wiryeseong Fortress on Seonggeosan Mountain in Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do Province were frail due to their deterioration within the burial environment. To prevent further deformation, conservation treatment was conducted on them to strengthen the wooden materials and stabilize the dimensions. Prior to the conservation treatment, the species of wood was determined to be pine and infrared Irradiation on the patterns remaining on the wooden fish revealed that they were depictions of carp. For conservation treatment, the wooden fish were impregnated with PEG #3, 350 in a water solution with a 40% concentration, followed by freeze-drying.
Pancreatic cancer treatment has advanced. In particular, effective chemotherapy regimen development has fundamentally altered the therapeutic concept and strategy for pancreatic cancer treatment. Consequently, the prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer has gradually improved. Conversion surgery for locally advanced pancreatic cancer may offer long-term survival or even a full recovery in some individuals. In contrast, metastatic pancreatic cancer has long been considered a surgical contraindication because aggressive surgical resection of the metastatic lesions does not prolong patient survival. Unexpectedly positive benefits of anticancer therapy in recent clinical experience were observed even with metastatic pancreatic cancer. To date, little evidence presented the success of surgical resection for metastatic pancreatic cancer treatment in such rare cases. However, hope and concern are growing that surgical intervention, even in patients with metastatic cancer, may result in favorable outcomes. Several studies suggested different surgical intervention effects depending on metastasis sites and patterns. Thus, this review summarizes the current status of surgery in the multidisciplinary treatment of oligometastatic pancreatic cancer and discusses future perspectives.
This review delved into the intricate relationship between the gastrointestinal microbiome and gastric cancer, particularly focusing on post-treatment alterations, notably following gastrectomy, and the effects of anticancer therapies. Following gastrectomy, analysis of fecal samples revealed an increased presence of oral cavity aerotolerant and bile acid-transforming bacteria in the intestine. Similar changes were observed in the gastric microbiome, highlighting significant alterations in taxon abundance and emphasizing the reciprocal interaction between the oral and gastric microbiomes. In contrast, the impact of chemotherapy and immunotherapy on the gut microbiome was subtle, although discernible differences were noted between treatment responders and non-responders. Certain bacterial taxa showed promise as potential prognostic markers. Notably, probiotics emerged as a promising approach for postgastrectomy recovery, displaying the capacity to alleviate inflammation, bolster immune responses, and maintain a healthy gut microbiome. Several strains, including Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Clostridium butyricum, exhibited favorable outcomes in postoperative patients, suggesting their potential roles in comprehensive patient care. In conclusion, understanding the intricate interplay between the gastrointestinal microbiome and gastric cancer treatment offers prospects for predicting responses and enhancing postoperative recovery. Probiotics, with their positive impact on inflammation and immunity, have emerged as potential adjuncts in patient care. Continued research is imperative to fully harness the potential of microbiome-based interventions in the management of gastric cancer.
Objective: The aims of the present study were to evaluate the changes in the maximum lip-closing force (MLF) after orthodontic treatment with or without premolar extractions and verify the correlation of these changes with dentoskeletal changes. Methods: In total, 17 women who underwent nonextraction orthodontic treatment and 15 women who underwent orthodontic treatment with extraction of all four first premolars were included in this retrospective study. For all patients, lateral cephalograms and dental models were measured before (T0) and after (T1) treatment. In addition, MLF was measured at both time points using the Lip De Cum LDC-110R® device. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate changes in clinical variables and MLF and their correlations. Results: Both groups showed similar skeletal patterns, although the extraction group showed greater proclination of the maxillary and mandibular incisors and lip protrusion compared to the nonextraction group at T0. MLF at T0 was comparable between the two groups. The reduction in the arch width and depth and incisor retroclination from T0 to T1 were more pronounced in the extraction group than in the nonextraction group. MLF in the extraction group significantly increased during the treatment period, and this increase was significantly greater than that in the nonextraction group. The increase in MLF was found to be correlated with the increase in the interincisal angle and decrease in the intermolar width, arch depth, and incisor-mandibular plane angle. Conclusions: This study suggests that MLF increases to a greater extent during extraction orthodontic treatment than during nonextraction orthodontic treatment.
Soy isoflavones have been hypothesized to exert hormonal effects and to enhance bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. To test this hypothesis, we studied the effects of soy isoflavones supplements on bone mineral density and sex hormones (serum estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin and testosterone) in 47 postmenopausal women. There were 24 participants in the treatment group and 23 in the control group. The treatment group consumed the isoftavones extract capsule daily (which contained 90 mg of soy isoflavones) for 12 weeks. The study compared pre- and post-isoflavones intake in the following areas: physical examination, diet survey, bone mineral density and serum sex hormone levels. The average age of the treatment group was 64.63 years and that of the control group was 66.48 years. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of height, weight, and body mass index. Both groups maintained regular diet patterns in terms of their average daily nutrient intake. There was no significant difference between the treatment group (18.49 mg) and the control group (21.27 mg) in terms of daily isoflavones intake based on diet. The 12-week analysis of bone mineral density change after taking isoflavones supplements demonstrated no significant differences in the following : lumbar spine BMD (0.82 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in pre versus 0.81 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in post), femoral neck BMD (0.58 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in pre versus 0.57 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in post) in the treatment group. There was no significant difference in serum estradiol in the isoflavones treatment group. The subjects indicated no significant difference in serum testosterone in the isoflavones treatment group. But the subjects indicated a significant difference in sex hormone-binding globulin (60.04 nmol/L in pre versus 52.39 nmol/L in post) in the isoflavones treatment group at the levels of p < 0.05. The significant decrease in sex hormone-binding globulin did indicate the need for long-term study on isoflavones supplementation as well as its positive effect on bone mineral density.

Background: Sedation or outpatient general anesthesia is a necessary method for a successful dental treatment for children and the disabled who have a difficulty of cooperation. The aim of this study was to assess the patients who had dental treatment under sedation or outpatient general anesthesia at department of pediatric dentistry, Chonnam national university dental hospital and Gwangju dental clinic for the disabled. Methods: 875 patients who had sedation from January 2009 to September 2013 and 88 patients who had outpatient general anesthesia after May 2011 were assessed for this study. Patient's distribution and treatment patterns were examined. Results: The number of patients has been increasing in both sedation and outpatient general anesthesia. In case of sedation, the proportion of male patients was higher and 4-6 years age group was the highest. Most patients have resided in Gwangju buk-gu and the percentage of restorative treatment was the highest. In case of outpatient general anesthesia, the proportion of male patients was higher than that of sedation. Two groups, 10-19 and 20-29 years age, consisted most of patient. Most patients have resided in Gwangju buk-gu and Jeollanam-do, and the percentage of periodontic and preventive treatment was the highest. Conclusions: Sedation or outpatient general anesthesia for dental treatment has been increasing for children and the disabled who have a difficulty of cooperation. Therefore, it is important to improve treatment environment under sedation and general anesthesia through continuous research and studies.

Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) patients need regular follow-up because of high incidence and severity of oral disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dental treatment outcomes of SHCN patients according to follow-up patterns. SHCN patients who were treated under general anesthesia (GA) at Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital from 2006 to 2014 were included in this study. The final samples comprised of 53 patients that were divided into regular (33 patients) and irregular (20 patients) follow-up groups according to their follow-up patterns. The type of dental treatment after GA during the follow-up periods were compared. In the irregular group, aggressive treatment including endodontic, prosthetic treatment, and extraction were predominant, compared with the regular group (p < 0.05). In addition, all patients who had dental treatment under GA in follow-up periods were in the irregular group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study provide the importance of regular follow-ups with SHCN patients and emphasize responsibilities of dentists for educating patients and their guardians.
