Edge cracks in cold rolling always influence to the quality of productions, while the "V" shaped cracks were propagated by passing the roll gap. We set up the sizes and shapes of initial cracks in simulation according to the references from real productions. Different to in hot rolling, the cracks in cold rolling couldn't be reduced from propagation automatically after generated, even if these could be reduced by changing the process parameters. In this paper, we described the affections of process parameters on the propagation of edge cracks, such as reduction ratio and tension. We predicted that the dependence of the cracks propagations of changing of process conditions and expected to gain the smaller edge cracks. By raising the reduction ratio, the cracks were propagated increasingly in both transverse and rolling directions. And as tension raise, the cracks became propagated in both directions in which transverse direction was less effectively.
The present work is concerned with a numerical investigation of the behaviour of reinforced-concrete beams with non-bonded flexural tension reinforcement. The numerically-established behaviour of such beams with and without transverse reinforcement is compared with its counterpart of similar beams with bonded reinforcement. From the comparison, it is found that the development of bond anywhere within the shear span inevitably leads to inclined cracking which is the cause of 'shear' failure. On the other hand, the lack of bond within the shear span of the beams is found, not only to prevent cracking within the shear span, but, also, to lead to a flexural type of failure preceded by the formation of horizontal splitting of concrete in the compressive zone. It is also found that delaying the extension of horizontal splitting through the provision of transverse reinforcement in the beam mid span can lead to flexural failure after yielding of the tension reinforcement. Yielding of the tension reinforcement before the horizontal splitting of the compressive zone may also be achieved by reducing the amount of the latter reinforcement.

A compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete according to current design codes. Including effects of transverse reinforcement, a compression splice becomes much longer than a tension splice. Effects of transverse reinforcement on strength and behavior of compression lap splice, which always exist in actual structures, have been investigated through experimental study of column tests with concrete strength of 40 and 60 MPa. Confined specimens have twice of calculated strengths by current design codes. New design equations for the compression lap splice including the effects of transverse reinforcement are required for practical purpose of ultra-high strength concrete. End bearing is enhanced by transverse reinforcement placed at ends of splice not by transverse reinforcement within splice length. As more transverse reinforcement are placed, the stresses developed by bond linearly increase. The transverse reinforcements at ends of splice a little improve the strength by bond.

Multilayered high-temperature superconductor coated conductor (CC) tapes are used in an extensive range of applications and are exposed to many stresses such as hoop stress, radial/transverse tensile stress under large Lorentz forces, and thermal stress while cooling if thermal expansion properties differ. Loads induced transversely at the tape surface inevitably create delamination phenomena in the multilayered CC tapes. Thus, delamination behaviors of CC tapes along the c-axis under transverse loading conditions, which can vary based on manufacturing process and constituent layers, must be characterized for applications. The anvil test method was used to mechanically investigate the delamination characteristics of various commercially available Ag-stabilized CC tapes at room temperature and 77 K, finding superior strength at the latter. The wide variations found depended on tape structure and fabrication technique. Fractographic morphologies of delaminated tapes supported the findings under transverse loading conditions.
This paper describes the results obtained from 11 direct tension tests to explore the influence of concrete strength on tension stiffening behavior in reinforced concrete axial members. Three different concrete compressive strengths, 250, 650, and 900kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, were included as a main variable, while the ratio of cover thickness-to-rebar diameter was kept constant to be 2.62 to prevent from splitting cracking. As the results, it was appeared that, as higher concrete strength was used, less tension stiffening effect was resulted, and the residual deformation upon unloading was larger. In addition, the spacing between adjacent transverse cracks became smaller with higher concrete strength. The major cause for those results may be attributed to the fact that nonuniform bond stress concentration at both loaded ends and crack sections becomes severer as higher concrete is used, thereby local bond failure becomes more susceptible. From these findings, it would be said the increase in flexural stiffness resulting from using high-strength concrete will be much smaller than that predicted by the conventional knowledge. Finally, a factor accunting for concrete strength was introduced to take account for the effect of HSC on tension stiffening. This proposed equation predicts well the tension stiffening for the effect of HSC on tension stiffening. This proposed equation predicts well the tension stiffening behavior of these tests.
Pressure tensors at the planar surface of liquid-vapor argon are evaluated from the virial theorem, Irving-Kirkwood, and Harasima versions using a test-area molecular dynamics simulation method through a Lennard-Jones intermolecular potential at two temperatures. We found that the normal and transverse components of the pressure tensor, $p_N(z)$ and $p_T(z)$, obtained from the virial theorem and Harasima version are essentially the same. The normal component of the pressure tensor from Irving-Kirkwood version, $p_N^{IK}(z)$, is shown to be a nearly constant at the lower temperature, independent of z, as agreed in a previous study, but not for $p_N^H$(z), while the transverse components, $p_T^{IK}(z)$ and $p_T^H(z)$, are almost the same. The values of surface tension for both versions computed from $p_N(z)-p_T(z)$ are also the same and are fully consistent with the experimental data.

This paper addresses the effect of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia on the natural frequency of beams under axial loads. It has been reported in the author's paper using a finite element analysis that the Timoshenko effect in a rotating disk deceases and then increases again with increasing rotation speed. To validate the phenomenon, the simply-supported beams under uniform tension are selected in this study since they have exact solutions in vibration problem. The results show that the axial tension in beams would not make the Timoshenko effect decrease monotonically but could make the effect increase again unlike the results reported in the other studies for beams.
A rational three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model is described and implemented for evaluating the behavior of high strength concrete slabs under transverse load. The concrete was idealized by using twenty-nodded isoparametric brick elements with embedded reinforcements. The concrete material modeling allows for normal (NSC) and high strength concrete (HSC), which was calibrated based on experimental data. The behavior of concrete in compression is simulated by an elastoplastic work-hardening model, and in tension a suitable post-cracking model based on tension stiffening and shear retention models are employed. The nonlinear equations have been solved using the incremental iterative technique based on the modified Newton-Raphson method. The FE formulation and material modeling is implemented into a finite element code in order to carry out the numerical study and to predict the behavior up to ultimate conditions of various slabs under transverse loads. The validity of the theoretical formulations and the program used was verified through comparison with available experimental data, and the agreement has proven to be very good. A parametric study has been also carried out to investigate the influence of different material and geometric properties on the behavior of HSC slabs. Influencing factors, such as concrete strength, steel ratio, aspect ratio, and support conditions on the load-deflection characteristics, concrete and steel stresses and strains were investigated.
The purpose of this study is to develop the control technology of the welding distortion caused by Auto NG-GTA(Narrow Gap-GTA) welding process at the STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment. Heat input model for Auto NG-GTA welding process was established and verified by measuring temperature change and molten pool shape at the bead-on-plate weldment. With the heat input model developed, the effect of tension load on the welding distortion at the STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment was evaluated using the thermo-elasto-plastic FE analysis. In accordance with FEA results, the angular distortion and transverse shrinkage sharply decreased with an increase in tension load. This result indicated that tensioning method was an effective countermeasure against the welding distortion of the STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment.
