  • Dynamic analysis of an embedded single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) traversed by a moving nanoparticle, which is modeled as a moving load, is investigated in this study based on the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory, including transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using the principle of virtual displacement. The Galerkin method and the direct integration method of Newmark are employed to find the dynamic response of the SWCNT. A detailed parametric study is conducted to study the influences of the nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio of the SWCNT, elastic medium constant and the moving load velocity on the dynamic responses of SWCNT. For comparison purpose, free vibration frequencies of the SWCNT are obtained and compared with a previously published study. Good agreement is observed. The results show that the above mentioned effects play an important role on the dynamic behaviour of the SWCNT.

  • Thermally induced vibration response of solar array is investigated. The solar array model consists of composite thin walled beam and solar blanket, spreader bar. The composite thin walled beam incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. The solar blanket is a membrane subjected to uniform tension in the z direction. The spreader bar is a rigid member. A coupled thermal structure analysis that includes the effects of structural deformations on heating and temperature gradient is investigated. A stability criterion given in parameters for establishes the conditions for thermal flutter.

  • The goal of this study is to investigate dynamic responses of laminated composite beams under a moving load with thermal effects. The governing equations of problem are derived by using the Lagrange procedure. The transverse-shear strain and rotary inertia are considered within the Timoshenko beam theory. The material properties of laminas are considered as the temperature dependent physical property. The differential equations of the problem are solved by the Ritz method. The solution step of dynamic problem, the Newmark average acceleration method is used in the time history. A compassion study is performed for accuracy of used formulations and method. In the numerical results, the effects of velocity of moving load, temperature values, the fiber orientation angles and the stacking sequence of laminas on the dynamic responses of the composite laminated beam are investigated.

  • One of the major divisions in the mathematical modelling of a tubular structure is to include the effect of the transverse shear stress and rotary inertia in vibration of members. During the past three decades, problems of vibration of tubular structures have been considered by some authors, and special attention has been devoted to the Timoshenko theory. There have been considerable efforts, also, to apply the method of spectral analysis to vibration of a structure with rectangular section beams. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results of the spectrally formulated finite element analyses for the Timoshenko theory with those derived from the conventional finite element method for a tubular structure. The spectrally formulated finite element starts at the same starting point as the conventional finite element formulation. However, it works in the frequency domain. Using a computer program, the proposed formulation has been extended to derive the dynamic response of a tubular structure under an impact load.

  • A study of the natural vibraion of Timoshenko beam with a laminar tear is presented. An analytic model, based on the transverse and longitudinal vibration of beams is employed to determine the natural frequencies. A specific example are given to show the effects of rotary inertia, and shear deformation on the natural frequencies of the beam with a laminar tear. the variations of matural frequencies of beam with the changes of size and location of laminar tear are plotted for several thickness ratio.

  • Forced vibration analysis of a simple supported viscoelastic nanobeam is studied based on modified couple stress theory (MCST). The nanobeam is excited by a transverse triangular force impulse modulated by a harmonic motion. The elastic medium is considered as Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation. The damping effect is considered by using the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model. The inclusion of an additional material parameter enables the new beam model to capture the size effect. The new non-classical beam model reduces to the classical beam model when the length scale parameter is set to zero. The considered problem is investigated within the Timoshenko beam theory by using finite element method. The effects of the transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia are included according to the Timoshenko beam theory. The obtained system of differential equations is reduced to a linear algebraic equation system and solved in the time domain by using Newmark average acceleration method. Numerical results are presented to investigate the influences the material length scale parameter, the parameter of the elastic medium and aspect ratio on the dynamic response of the nanobeam. Also, the difference between the classical beam theory (CBT) and modified couple stress theory is investigated for forced vibration responses of nanobeams.

  • A $C^{\circ}$ continuous finite element formulation of a higher order displacement theory is presented for predicting linear and geometrically non-linear in the sense of von Karman transient responses of composite and sandwich plates. The displacement model accounts for non-linear cubic variation of tangential displacement components through the thickness of the laminate and the theory requires no shear correction coefficients. In the time domain, the explicit central difference integrator is used in conjunction with the special mass matrix diagonalization scheme which conserves the total mass of the element and included effects due to rotary inertia terms. The parametric effects of the time step, finite element mesh, lamination scheme and orthotropy on the linear and geometrically non-linear responses are investigated. Numerical results for central transverse deflection, stresses and stress resultants are presented for square/rectangular composite and sandwich plates under various boundary conditions and loadings and these are compared with the results from other sources. Some new results are also tabulated for future reference.
