  • The joints between precast PSC slabs of the intermediate road slab in double deck tunnel are inevitably generated in the road traffic vehicle traveling direction. Therefore, it is important to make the behavior of parts on the joint in one piece. The imtermediate road slab system of double deck tunnel in great depth proposed in this study will be constructed with precast PSC slab in order to minimize the construction period. And the joint connection between the precast slab has been developed in two methods: the 'Transverse tendon reinforcement method' and 'High strength bolts connection method'. Also, the experiments were performed for the full scale model in order to evaluate the performance of the intermediate road deck slab with two type joints systems, the structural stability was verified through the F.E.M analsysis. The results of static loading test and F.E.M analysis investigated a very stable behavior of intermediate road deck slab in double deck tunnel applying the joint methods developed in this study, in the cracks and deflections to satisfy the design standards of Highway Roads Bridges (2011), it was determined that there is no problem even servicebility.

  • This paper presents the results of the experimental and analytical investigation for the fatigue strength of welded details frequently used in steel bridges, especially for the details with relatively lower fatigue strength. The welded details included four kinds of welded details corresponding to the categories C, D, E and E' which represent the flange attachment details, web attachment details, transverse stiffeners and cover-plate details. Tensile fatigue tests were performed. The test results were compared with other available test results and the fatigue criteria of AASHTO, JSSC and Eurocode specifications. Generally, our test results were well agreed with other test results and satisfied with above-mentioned fatigue design provisions. However, it was found that transversely loaded weld-details showed lower fatigue strength than longitudinally loaded weld-details in transverse stiffener detail, and the test results of those details were not satisfied with AASHTO fatigue provisions. Examining the effect of length of gusset plate attachment details, welded details with longer attachment showed relatively lower fatigue strength, especially for the out-of-plane gusset plate details. It is recommended to perform additional fatigue tests with various loading and detail parameters and to establish the more detailed fatigue categories such as Eurocode or JSSC

  • Prosthetic replacement is one of the most common methods of reconstruction after resection of malignant tumor around the knee. Gait analysis provides a relative objective data about the gait function of patients with prosthesis. The purpose of this study was to compare the gait pattern of the patients who underwent limb salvage surgery with prosthesis for distal femur and that of patients with prosthesis for proximal tibia. This study included ten patients (4 males, 6 females, mean age 22.7 years, range 14-36) who underwent a wide resection and Kotz hinged modular reconstruction prosthesis replacement and six normal adult(Control). The site of bone tumor was the distal femur (Group 1) in six patients and proximal tibia (Group 2) in 4 patients. The follow-up period ranged from 15 to 82 months (mean : 33 months). The evaluation consisted of clinical assessment, radiographic assessment, gait analysis using VICON 370 Motion Analysis System. The gait analysis included the linear parameters such as, walking velocity, cadence, step length, stride length, stance time, swing time, single support and double support time and the three-dimensional kinematics (joint rotation angle, velocity of joint rotation) of ankle, knee, hip and pelvis in sagittal, coronal and transverse plane. For the kinetic evaluation, the moment of force (unit: Nm/kg) and power (unit: Watt/kg) of ankle, knee and hip joint in sagittal, coronal and transverse plane. In the linear parameters, cadence, velocity, step time and single support were decreased in both group 1 and group 2 compared with control. Double support decreased in group 2 compared with control significantly(p<.05). In contrast to our hypothesis, there was no significant difference between group 1 and group 2. In Kinematics, we observed significant difference (p<.05) of decreased knee flexion in loading response (G2

  • This study examines the stability of Sungsu bridge which was issued nine years ago because of its collapse accident and now is on the progress of extension work in each construction stage by construction monitoring system. From this study, the measured value in each construction stage of anchorage truss and suspended truss shows the agreement with the analytical values up to 60~110 percents, and the elements' stresses emanating from the pre-loading stage, are also similar to the analytical value. Regarding these results, it is expected that each member has enough stiffness and the construction condition is satisfactory. In addition, it is expected that the transverse members and sway bracing bolts integrate completely the existing truss and new attached truss as a one body from the result of the vibration test to find out the integration rates.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of behavior of square CFT columns with large the width-ro thickness ratio strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets subjected to concentrated axial loading. The main parameters were b/t ratio and the number of CFRP layers and 6 specimens were fabricated. The values of b/t were ranged from 60 to 100. From the tests, Maximum increase of 16% was also achieved in axial-load capacity with three transverse layered CFRP applied on four sides of steel tubes. The load capacity decreased up to 41% comparing with nominal load capacity of unstrengthened CFT column. However, for CFRP strengthened CFT, the load capacity decreased up to 32%. Finally, from the load-strain relationships, the local buckling occurred before yield point of steel tubes. Also, from the load-strain relationships, it was observed that local buckling were delayed on CFT columns by CFRP sheets retrofitting.

  • This study examined the characteristics of radio-frequency/vacuum dried Korean red pine ($Pinus$ $densoflora$) heavy timbers with 250 ${\times}$ 250 mm (S), 300 ${\times}$ 300 mm (L) in cross section and 300 mm in diameter, and 3,600 mm in length, which were subjected to compressive loading after a kerf pretreatment. The following results were obtained : The drying time was short and the drying rate was high in spite of the large cross section of specimens. The moisture gradient inall specimens was gentle in both longitudinal and transverse directions owing to dielectric heating. The shrinkage of the width in the direction perpendicular to was 21 percent ~ 76 percent of that of the thickness of square timbers in the direction parallel to the mechanical pressure. The casehardening for all specimens was very slight because of significantly reduced ratio of the tangential to radial shrinkage of specimens and kerfing. The surface checks somewhat severely occurred although the occurrence extent of the surface checks on the kerfed specimens was slight compared withthat on the control specimen.

  • This paper presents the results of a series of tests carried out on cold-formed steel rectangular hollow and concrete infilled beam to column connections and frames. A stub column was chosen such that overall buckling does not influence the connection behaviour. The beam chosen was a short-span cantilever with a concentrated load applied at the free end. The beam was connected to the columns along the strong and weak axes of columns and these connections were tested to failure. Twelve experiments were conducted on cold-formed steel direct welded tubular beam to column connections and twelve experiments on connections with concrete infilled column subjected to monotonic loading. In all the experiments conducted, the stiffness of the connection, the ductility characteristics and the moment rotation behaviour were studied. The dominant mode of failure in hollow section connections was chord face yielding and not weld failure. Provision of concrete infill increases the stiffness and the ultimate moment carrying capacity substantially, irrespective of the axis of loading of the column. Weld failure and bearing failure due to transverse compression occurred in connections with concrete infilled columns. Six single-bay two storied frames both with and without concrete infill, and columns loaded along the major and minor axes were tested to failure. Concentrated load was applied at the midspan of first floor beam. The change in behaviour of the frame due to provision of infill in the column and in the entire frame was compared with hollow frames. Failure of the weld at the junction of the beam occurred for frames with infilled columns. Design expressions are suggested for the yielding of the column face in hollow sections and bearing failure in infilled columns which closely predicted the experimental failure loads.

  • In this study, we carried out nonlinear analysis according to various interface nonlinear models by interaction magnitude, and analyzed interface behavior such as distribution of tangential traction and relative slip in steel-concrete composite structure. As a result of this study, tangential traction and relative slip of interface is rapidly increased at the steel plate-concrete interface, especially at the neutral region, rather than tensile, as opposed to the T beam-concrete interface. In transverse direction, it has gradually reduced to go outside from loading position. In longitudinal direction, it was minimum at the central region near the loading point, maximum at 0.6-0.7L from support and gradually reduced as it nears support. Moreover, as the load is increased, the failure of interface gradually expands from the maximum tangential traction position to the entire region. It is expected to provide fundamentality for interface behavior and load-carrying mechanism, and for the design of bending and shear connection of steel-concrete composite structure.

  • Zr-based amorphous alloy matrix composites reinforced with tantalum continuous fibers were fabricated by the liquid pressing process, and their anisotropic mechanical properties were investigated by tensile and compressive tests of $0^{\circ}$(longitudinal)-, $45^{\circ}$-, and $90^{\circ}$(transverse)-orientation specimens. About 60 vol.% of tantalum fibers were homogeneously distributed inside the amorphous matrix, which contained a small amount of polygonal crystalline particles. The ductility of the tantalum-continuous-fiber-reinforced composite under tensile or compressive loading was dramatically improved over that of the monolithic amorphous alloy, while maintaining high strength. When the fiber direction was not matched with the loading direction, the reduction of the strength and ductility was not serious because of excellent fiber/matrix interfacial strength. Observation of the anisotropic deformation and fracture behavior showed the formation of multiple shear bands, the obstruction of crack propagation by fibers, and the deformation of fibers themselves, thereby resulting in tensile elongation of 3%~4% and compressive elongation of 15%~30%. These results suggest that the liquid pressing process was useful for the development of amorphous matrix composites with excellent ductility and anisotropic mechanical properties.

  • This study dealt with the behavior of pile-abutment joints in integral abutment bridges. Two types of pile-abutment joints were proposed to strengthen its rigid action. One was fabricated with transverse rebars which penetrated the H-pile in the abutment. The other was composed of stud shear connectors on the flanges of the H-pile. Three half scaled pile-abutment joint specimens were fabricated and loading tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of proposed joints. The results showed that the initial stiffness in elastic region of all specimens was sufficient to be applied for the integral abutment bridges. However, the performances of the proposed joints were shown to be more effective in rigid action compared to the joints types suggested by the Integral Bridge Design Guideline. The results from stiffness, strength, rotation and crack propagation tests supported this matter.
