This paper investigates the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) circular columns under combined loading including torsion. The main variables considered in this study are the ratio of torsional moment to bending moment (T/M) and the level of detailing for moderate and high seismicity (low and high transverse reinforcement/spiral ratio). This paper presents the results of tests on seven columns subjected to cyclic bending and shear, cyclic torsion, and various levels of combined cyclic bending, shear, and torsion. Columns under combined loading were tested at T/M ratios of 0.2 and 0.4. These columns were reinforced with two spiral reinforcement ratios of 0.73% and 1.32%. Similarly, the columns subjected to pure torsion were tested with two spiral reinforcement ratios of 0.73% and 1.32%. This study examined the significance of proper detailing, and spiral reinforcement ratio and its effect on the torsional resistance under combined loading. The test results demonstrate that both the flexural and torsional capacities are decreased due to the effect of combined loading. Furthermore, they show a significant change in the failure mode and deformation characteristics depending on the spiral reinforcement ratio. The increase in spiral reinforcement ratio also led to significant improvement in strength and ductility.

The dynamic response due to the unbalance and crack and the quasi-static response due to gravity are analytically derived based on the complex transfer matrix. The additional slope is expressed as function of the bending moment at crack position based on the fracture mechanics concept, and inversely the bending moment is expressed as function of the additional slope at the crack position. At each angle step during the shaft revolution, the additional slope and bending moment are calculated by an iterative method. The transient behavior is considered by introducing Fourier series expansion concept for the additional slope. Simulation is carried out for a simple rotor similar to those available in the literature and comparison of the basic crack behavior is shown. Using the additional slope, the cracked rotor behavior is explained with the crack depth increased: the magnitude of the additional slope increases and the closed crack duration during a revolution decreases as the crack depth increases. The direction of unbalance is also shown as a factor to affect the crack breathing. Whirl orbits are shown near the sub-critical speed ranges of the rotor.

In this paper, a dynamic model for the rotor shaft-coupling-blade system is developed. The blades are attached to a disk and driven by an electric motor shaft which is flexible in torsion. We assumed that the shaft torsional flexibility is lumped in the flexible coupling which is usually adopted in rotor systems. The Lagrangian approach with the small deformation theory for both blade-bending and shaft-torsional deformations is employed for developing the equation of the motion. The assumed modes method is used for estimating the blade transverse deflection. The numerical results highlight the effects of both structural damping of the system and the torsional stiffness of the flexible coupling to the dynamic response of the blade. The results showed strong coupling between the blade bending and shaft torsional vibrations in the form of inertial nonlinearif, stiffness hardening and softening.
The bending vibration and thermal flutter instability of spacecraft booms modeled as circular thin-walled beams of closed cross-section and subjected to thermal radiation loading is investigated in this paper. The thin-walled beam model incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. Thermally induced vibration response characteristics of a composite thin walled beam exhibiting the circumferantially uniform system(CUS) configuration are exploited in connection with the structural flapwise bending-lagwise bending coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and from ply stacking sequence. The numerical simulations display deflection time-history as a function of the ply-angle of fibers of the composite materials, damping factor, incident angle of solar heat flux, as well as the boundary of the thermal flutter instability domain. The adaptive control are provided by a system of piezoelectric devices whose sensing and actuating functions are combined and that are bonded or embedded into the host structure.
In this paper, a higher order shear and normal deformation theory is presented for functionally graded material (FGM) plates. By dividing the transverse displacement into bending, shear and thickness stretching parts, the number of unknowns and governing equations for the present theory is reduced, significantly facilitating engineering analysis. Indeed, the number of unknown functions involved in the present theory is only five, as opposed to six or even greater numbers in the case of other shear and normal deformation theories. The present theory accounts for both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a hyperbolic variation of ail displacements across the thickness and satisfies the stress-free boundary conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate without requiring any shear correction factor. Equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for the bending and free vibration analysis are obtained for simply supported plates. The obtained results are compared with three-dimensional and quasi- three-dimensional solutions and those predicted by other plate theories. It can be concluded that the present theory is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the bending and free vibration responses of functionally graded plates.

In this study, static bending of edge cracked micro beams is studied analytically under uniformly distributed transverse loading based on modified couple stress theory. The cracked beam is modelled using a proper modification of the classical cracked-beam theory consisting of two sub-beams connected through a massless elastic rotational spring. The deflection curve expressions of the edge cracked microbeam segments separated by the rotational spring are determined by the Integration method. The elastic curve functions of the edge cracked micro beams are obtained in explicit form for cantilever and simply supported beams. In order to establish the accuracy of the present formulation and results, the deflections are obtained, and compared with the published results available in the literature. Good agreement is observed. In the numerical study, the elastic deflections of the edge cracked micro beams are calculated and discussed for different crack positions, different lengths of the beam, different length scale parameter, different crack depths, and some typical boundary conditions. Also, the difference between the classical beam theory and modified couple stress theory is investigated for static bending of edge cracked microbeams. It is believed that the tabulated results will be a reference with which other researchers can compare their results.
The effect of porosity on bending and free vibration behavior of simply supported functionally graded plate reposed on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation is investigated analytically in the present paper. The modified rule of mixture covering porosity phases is used to describe and approximate material properties of the FGM plates with porosity phases. The effect due to transverse shear is included by using a new refined shear deformation theory. The number of unknown functions involved in the present theory is only four as against five or more in case of other shear deformation theories. The Poisson ratio is held constant. Based on the sinusoidal shear deformation theory, the position of neutral surface is determined and the equation of motion for FG rectangular plates resting on elastic foundation based on neutral surface is obtained through the minimum total potential energy and Hamilton's principle. The convergence of the method is demonstrated and to validate the results, comparisons are made with the available solutions for both isotropic and functionally graded material (FGM). The effect of porosity volume fraction on Al/Al2O3 and Ti-6Al-4V/Aluminum oxide plates are presented in graphical forms. The roles played by the constituent volume fraction index, the foundation stiffness parameters and the geometry of the plate is also studied.

The chloride attack of the top mat of reinforcing bars is a major cause of deterioration of comcrete deck of plate girder bridges. This is caused by a current design method which requires a top mat of reinforcing bars to resist a negative bending moment in bridge decks. In recently, empirical evidence has indicated that the top transverse reinforcing bars can patially or fully be eliminated without jeopardizing the structural integrity of a deck. So, one of the most efficient way to increase durability of concrete deck of bridges is the development of new design method that reduce or eliminate the top mat reinforcing bars, mad it is possible by the exact analysis that considering the negative bending moment reducing effect which introduced by relative deflection of plate girders. In this study, we develop the new bridge deck analysis method that considered the effect of relative girder deflection by applying the principles of slope deflection method of frames, and that is fine tuned with results of finite element analysis. This new approach evaluate a bending moment in a deck based on the effect of relative girder deflection as well as the magnitude of wheel loads, the girder spacing and stiffness, deck stiffness and the span length
