  • Network performance measure has been more and more important in transportation sector because traffic congestion has been steadily increasing in urban area. VKT is defined a sum of traveled distances of whole vehicles on the road network and one of the most important measure of effectiveness (MOE) for network performance measure. This paper aims to propose a methodology for estimating VKT and to apply it to calculate VKT in 6 major cities in Korea. We calculate VKT in 6 major cities by estimating traffic volumes on the uncollected road sections using regression kriging. It is expected that the proposed methodology can be applied various cities.

  • Metro serves more than a basic function of transporting passengers between short distances but became a crucial part of civic culture due to the fact that citizens demand various facilities for better life style. Therefore, domestic metro cuts off train noise and air dust, provides pleasant platform surroundings by offering effective HVAC, and establishes PSD (Platform Screen Door) system to prevent falls into train tracks. To control and interlock EMU Door and PSD to avoid passenger complaint and revenue service obstructions, stability and reliability of on-board & wayside equipment are required foremost and each line needs to build optimum interface between on-board & wayside equipment. To control PSD, we would like to introduce examples of Busan Metro(BTC : Busan Transportation Corporation) which already utilizes interface between on-board & wayside equipment in various ways and consider optimum interface between on-board & wayside equipment in future PSD system.

  • Many vehicle fleet planning systems have been suggested to minimize the routing distances of vehicles or reduce the transportation cost. But the more considerations the method takes, the higher complexites are involved in a large number of practical situations. The purpose of this paper is to vehicle fleet planning system. This paper is considered multi-objective optimization. The vehicle fleet planning system developed by this study involves such complicated and restricted conditions as one depot, multiple nodes (demand points), multiple vehicle types, multipel order items, and other many restrictions for operating vehicles. The proposed algorithm is compared with the nearest neighbor heuristic (NNH) and the savings heuristic (SAH) algorithm in terms of total logistics cost and driving time. This method constructs a route with a minimum number of vehicles for a given demand. This method can be used to any companys which vehicle fleet planning system under circumstances considered in this paper.

  • Due to the rapid increase of automobiles and daily driving distances, air pollution by automobiles is still dominant problem of large city in spite of strict emission refutation and development of reduction technologies. Among the air pollution resources of automobile , industry. electricity generation and heating. automobile keeps 51% of total nationwide air pollution in 1998 and this proportion Is increasing in large cities from 65% to 85%. To reduce these air pollution. catalytic converter and electronic engine control, exhaust gas re-circulation and evaporative emission control system have continuously developed and applied to automobiles since 1987. Also strong emission standards and emission durability warranty have enforced and monitored annually by sampling several vehicle models. But technologies and regulations are incomplete, driver should participate in reducing air pollution for himself by planning driving, avoiding unnecessary idle and air conditioning, keeping periodic maintenance and using mass transportation.

  • In this study, market strategies for the HSR's fare system are suggested for successful operation of high speed train opened in April 2004. For price strategies, we suggested HSR's fare system considered competition with other transportation modals are supposed to be charged and some discount-fare policies compared to service distances are needed for the successful operation of high speed train after the train open. In addition, this study concludes that for non-price strategies, various services for customers driving for enough demand can provide the base for stable operation of high speed train in Korea by making balances or profitability.

  • Particle Velocity Equations were suggested in this paper for Korean surface blasting types, which were developed by Korean Society for Explosive Engineers (KSEE). Standard charges per delay for types and distances also were determined. USBM equation which was adopted by MOCT (Korean Ministry of Construction and Transportation) shows many problems for Korean situations.

  • Based on recent studies, the side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts was affected by unconfined compressive strength of rock, socket roughness, rock types and joints, and initial normal stress. Especially, the socket roughness was affected by rock types and joints, drilling methods, and diameters of pile. In this study, a new roughness measurement system (BKS-LRPS, Backyoung-KyungSung Laser Roughness Profiling System) usable in water was developed. Based on the laboratory model tests, an EMD (Effective Measurement Distances) according to various turbidity was proposed as EMD=$1149.2{\times}T^{-0.64}_b$.

  • We consider a facility layout problem with the objective of minimizing total transportation distance, which is the sum of rectilinear distances between facilities weighted by the frequency of trips between the facilities. It is assumed that facilities are required to have rectangular shapes and there is no empty space between the facilities in the layout. In this study, a graph theoretic heuristic is developed for the problem. In the heuristic, planar graphs are constructed to represent adjacencies between the facilities and then the graphs are converted to block layouts on a continual plane using a layout construction module. (Therefore, each graph corresponds to a layout.) An initial layout is obtained by constructing a maximal weighted planar graph and then the layout is improved by changing the planar graph. A simulated annealing algorithm is used to find a planar graph which gives the best layout. To show the performance of the proposed heuristic, computational experiments are done on randomly generated test problems and results are reported.
