  • The pulsed field gradient NMR method has been used to determine self-diffusion coefficients in ternary N-alkyl-N, N-dimethylamine oxide/hydrocarbon/$D_2O$ system. For n = 12, 14, 16 and n' = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, in the micellar phase, diffusion is chiefly governed by the hydrodynamic transport of micelles, supplemented by an exchange of solubilized hydrocarbon upon micellar collisions. This investgation is performed by variations in both the surfactant alkyl chain length and in the size of the hydrocarbon molecules. In cubic phases, the solvent still exhibits values of the diffusion coefficients which are typical for motion in a continuous water phase, with the microemulsion droplets acting as obstacle. Mobilities of the surfactant in the gel state were low and have been determined only for the surfactant($C_{12}DMAO$) with the shortest alkyl chain length. Exchange of hydrocarbon between micellar entities in the gel was found to be occured by a hopping process, the associated rate decreased with alkyl chain length of the surfactant.

Development of Safety Performance Function Based on Expressway Alignment Homogeneous Section (고속도로 선형 동질구간 기반의 안전성능함수 개발)

  • In the past, expressways focused on mobility. However, the paradigm of expressways fuction today has been changed from fast expressways to safe expressways as people's quality of living and consciousness level heightened. In 2012, 3,550 traffic accidents occurred on expressways and 371 people died. The fatality rate of traffic accidents on expressways is almost twice that on general national roads. This study developed accident forecast models (safety performance functions) based on the number of traffic accidents and traffic volumes on six major lines on expressways. It is difficult to forecast safety performance functions for each expressway line because the lines and the scales of expressways are different from each other; therefore, integrated safety performance functions of six lines were determined first, and the coefficients, which can correct the traffic accidents on each line, were calculated. It is believed that this study will contribute in the safer management of expressways by being used as basic information in the establishment of traffic safety strategies for each expressway line in prevention of traffic accidents. Moreover, more studies would be required in the future, which would suggest reliable accident forecasts by calculating correction coefficients by line through integrated models by groups dependent on the characteristics of each line.

Gas Permeation Properties of Carbon Dioxide and Methane for $PEBAX^{TM}$/TEOS Hybrid Membranes ($PEBAX^{TM}$/TEOS 하이브리드 분리막을 통한 이산화탄소와 메탄의 기체투과특성)

  • Poly(ether-block-amide)(PEBA, $PEBAX^{TM}$) resin is a thermoplastic elastomer combining linear chains of hard-rigid polyamide block interspaced soft-flexible polyether block. It was believed that the hard polyamide block provides the mechanical strength and permeation selectivity, whereas gas transport occurs primarily through the soft polyether block. The objective of this work was to investigate the gas permeation properties of carbon dioxide and methane for $PEBAX^{TM}$-1657 membrane and compare with those obtained for other grade of $PEBAX^{TM}$, $PEBAX^{TM}$-2533. And the organic/inorganic hybrid membranes were prepared using $PEBAX^{TM}$ and TEOS(tetraethoxysilane) by sol-gel process, and gas permeation properties were studied. $PEBAX^{TM}$-2533 membrane exhibited higher gas permeability coefficients than $PEBAX^{TM}$-1657 membrane. This was explained by the increase of chain mobility. The permeability coefficients for $PEBAX^{TM}$/TEOS hybrid membranes were higher than pure $PEBAX^{TM}$ membranes. This results were explained by the reduction of crystallinity of polyamide block by the introduction of TEOS. Ideal separation factor of hybrid membranes does not change much. This might be due to the increase of solubility selectivity.

Comparison of PM1, PM2.5, PM10 Concentrations in a Mountainous Coastal City, Gangneung Before and After the Yellow Dust Event in Spring (봄철 황사 전후 산악연안도시, 강릉시에서 PM1, PM2.5, PM10의 농도비교)

  • In order to investigate the variations and corelation among $PM_{10},\;PM_{2.5}\;and\;PM_1$ concentrations, the hourly concentrations of each particle sizes of 300nm to $20{\mu}m$ at a city, Gangneung in the eastern mountainous coast of Korean peninsula have been measured by GRIMM aerosol sampler-1107 from March 7 to 17, 2004. Before the influence of the Yellow Dust event from China toward the city, $PM_{10},\;PM_{2.5}\;and\;PM_1$, concentrations near the ground of the city were very low less than $35.97{\mu}g/m^3,\;22.33{\mu}g/m^3\;and\;16.77{\mu}g/m^3$, with little variations. Under the partial influence of the dust transport from the China on March 9, they increased to $87.08{\mu}g/m^3,\;56.55{\mu}g/m^3\;and\;51.62{\mu}g/m^3$. $PM_{10}$ concentration was 1.5 times higher than $PM_{2.5}$ and 1.85 times higher than $PM_1$. Ratio of $(PM_{10}-PM_{2.5})/PM_{2.5}$ had a maximum value of 1.49 with an averaged 0.5 and one of $(PM_{2.5}-PM_1)/PM_1$ had a maximum value of 0.4 with an averaged 0.25. $PM_{10}\;and\;PM_{2.5}$ concentrations were largely influenced by particles smaller than $2.5{\mu}m\;and\;1{\mu}m$ particle sizes, respectively. During the dust event from the afternoon of March 10 until 1200 LST, March 14, $PM_{10},\;PM_{2.5}\;and\;PM_1$ concentrations reached $343.53{\mu}g/m^3,\;105{\mu}g/m^3\;and\;60{\mu}g/m^3$, indicating the $PM_{10}$ concentration being 3.3 times higher than $PM_{2.5}$ and 5.97 times higher than $PM_1$. Ratio of $(PM_{10}-PM_{2.5})/PM_{2.5}$ had a maximum value of 7.82 with an averaged 3.5 and one of $(PM_{2.5}-PM_1)/PM_1$, had a maximum value of 2.8 with an averaged 1.5, showing $PM_{10}\;and\;PM_{2.5}$ concentrations largely influenced by particles greater than $2.5{\mu}m\;and\;1{\mu}m$ particle sizes, respectively. After the dust event, the most of PM concentrations became below $100{\mu}g/m^3$, except of 0900LST, March 15, showing the gradual decrease of their concentrations. Ratio of $(PM_{10}-PM_{2.5})/PM_{2.5}$ had a maximum value of 3.75 with an averaged 1.6 and one of $(PM_{2.5}-PM_1)/PM_1$ had a maximum value of 1.5 with an averaged 0.8, showing the $PM_{10}$ concentration largely influenced by corse particles than $2.5{\mu}m$ and the $PM_{2.5}$ by fine particles smaller than $1{\mu}m$, respectively. Before the dust event, correlation coefficients between $PM_{10},\;PM_{2.5}\;and\;PM_1$, were 0.89, 0.99 and 0.82, respectively, and during the dust event, the coefficients were 0.71, 0.94 and 0.44. After the dust event, the coefficients were 0.90, 0.99 and 0.85. For whole period, the coefficients were 0.54, 0.95 and 0.28, respectively.

  • Many articles have been published about a 2-degree of freedom model that includes the lateral and yaw motions for controller synthesis in intelligent transport system applications. In this paper, a 3-degree of freedom linear model that includes the roll motion is developed to design a robust steering controller for lane following maneuvers using ${\mu}$-synthesis. This linear perturbed system includes a set of parametric uncertainties in cornering stiffness and unmodelled dynamics in steering actuators. The state-space model with parametric uncertainties is represented in linear fractional transformation form. Design purpose can be obtained by properly choosing the frequency dependent weighting functions. The objective of this study is to keep the tracking error and steering input energy small in the presence of variations of the cornering stiffness coefficients. Furthermore, good ride quality has to be achieved against these uncertainties. Frequency-domain analyses and time-domain numerical simulations are carried out in order to evaluate these performance specifications of a given vehicle system. Finally, the simulation results indicate that the proposed robust controller achieves good performance over a wide range of uncertainty for the given maneuvers.

Dynamic Respiratory Measurements of Corynebacterium glutamicum using Membrane Mass Spectormetry

  • The present work presents a novel approach for the dynamic quantification of respiration rates on a small scale by using lysine-producing Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 21253. Cells sampeld from batch cultures at different times were incubated ina 12-ml scale bioreactor equipped with a membrane mass spectrometer. Under dynamic conditions, gas exchange across the gas-liquid phase, specific respiration rates, and RQ values were precisely measured. For this purpose, suitable mass balances were formulated. The transport coefficients for $O_2$ and $CO_2$, crucial for calculating the respiration activity, were determined as $k_La_{O2}=9.18h^{-1}$ and $k_La_{CO2}=5.10h^{-1}$ at 400 rpm. The application of the proposed method to batch cultures of C. glutamicum ATCC 21253 revealed the maximum specific respiration rates of $q_{O2}=8.4\;mmol\;g^{-1}h^{-1}\;and\;q_{CO2}=8.7\;mmol\;g^{-1}h^{-1}$ in the middle of the exponential growth phase after 5 h of cultivation. When the cells changed from growth to lysine production due to the depletion of the essential amino acids theonine, methionine, and leucine, $q_{O2}\;and\;q_{CO2}$ decreased significantly and RQ increased. The respiration data exhibited an excellent agreement with previous cultivations of the strain [13]. This confirms the potential of the developed approach to realistically reflect the metabolic activities of cells at their point of sampling. The short-term influence of added threonine, methionine, and leucine was highest during the shift from growth to lysine production, where $q_{O2}\;and\;q_{CO2}$ increased 50% within one minute after the pulse addition of these compounds. Non-growing, yet lysine-producing cells taken from the end of the batch cultivation revealed no metabolic stimulation with the addition of threonine, methionine, and leucine.

A Logit Type of Public Transit Trip Assignment Model Considering Stepwise Transfer Coefficients (Stepwise 환승계수를 고려한 Logit 유형 대중교통통행배정모형)

  • This study proposes a concept of Stepwise Transfer Coefficient(STC) which implies greater transfer cost with increasing the number of transfers. Thus, the public transport information system provides the choice sets of travel routes by the consideration of not only transportation time but also the optimum number of transfers. However, path choice problems that involve STC are found to include non additive cost, which requires additional route enumeration works. Discussions on route enumeration in actual transportation networks is very complicated, thereby warranting a theoretical examination of route search considering STC. From these points of view, this study results in a probability based transit trip assignment model including STC. This research also uses incoming link based entire route deletion method. The entire route deletion method proposed herein simplifies construction of an aggregation of possible routes by theoretically supporting the process of enumeration of the different routes from origin to destination. Conclusively, the STC reflected route based logit model is proposed as a public transportation transit trip assignment model.

Gas Transport Properties of Soluble Polyimides Containing Alicyclic Dianhydride (지환족 다이안하이드라이드를 포함하는 용해성 폴리이미드의 기체투과특성)

  • In this work, soluble polyimides were synthesized and characterized from 5-(2,5-dioxotetrahydrofuryl)-3-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride (DOCDA) and two diamines such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenylether (ODA), 1,4-phenylenediamine (p-PDA). Their thermal properties were analyzed with differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The gas permeability coefficients (P) and ideal selectivity for $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ of the prepared polyimide membranes were measured with a time-lag apparatus. DOCDA-ODA, DOCDA-p-PDA showed good permeability and selectivity; the permeabilities of $CO_2$ was 6.10, 0.74 barrers and the selectivity of $CO_2/CH_4$ were 67.03, 46.25, respectively. Therefore, DOCDA-ODA showed good possibility as gas separation membrane.

Objective Estimation of Velocity Streamfunction Field with Discretely Sampled Oceanic Data 11: with Application of Least-square Regression Analysis (객관적 분석을 통한 속도 유선함수(streamfunction) 산출 II: 최소자승 회귀분석법의 응용)

  • A least-square regression analysis is applied for the estimation of velocity streamfunction field based on discretely sampled current meter data. The coefficients of a streamfuunction that is expanded in terms of trigonometric basis function are obtained by enforcing the horizontal non-divergence of two-dimensional flow field. This method avoids Interpolation and gives a root-mean-square (rms) residual of fit which Includes the divergent part and noisiness of oceanic data. The Implementation of the method Is done by employing a boundary-fitted, curvilinear orthogonal coordinate which facilitates the specification of boundary conditions. An application is successfully made to the Texas-Louisiana shelf using the 32 months current meter data (31 moorings) observed as a part of the Texas-Louisiana Shelf and Transport Processes Study (LATEX). The rms residual of the fitting is relatively small for the shelf, which indicates the field Is Ivell represented by the streamnfunction.

Demand Estimation Methodology for a New Air Route (신규 항공노선에 대한 수요 예측 모델 연구)

  • A network connectivity has been regarded as a key element to strengthen a business competitive power in the aviation industry, so many airport authorities try to attract the new airlines and scheme out new air routes. With this trend, a study for an induced travel demand estimation methodology is needed. This study introduces a demand estimation method, especially for a new air route to a promising destination. With the results of previous studies, the derived demand is classified into four types - Local, Beyond, Behind and Bridge. The explanatory variables are established for each type of demand and the main independent variables are composed of distance, ratio of detour, and relative capacity compared with other airports. The equations using such variables and statistically significant coefficients are suggested as the model to make an estimation of derived demand for a new route. Therefore this study will be expected to take an initial step for all related parties to be involved more deeply into developing new air routes to enhance network connectivity.
