This paper describes the shape optimization of a stator blade in a single-stage transonic axial compressor. The blade optimization has been performed using response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. Two shape variables of the stator blade, which are used to define a stacking line, are introduced to increase an adiabatic efficiency. Data points for response evaluations have been selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method has been used for an optimization on a response surface. Throughout the shape optimization of a stator blade, the adiabatic efficiency is increased to 5.8 percent compared to that of the reference shape of the stator. The increase of the efficiency is mainly caused by the pressure enhancement in the stator blade. Flow separation on the blade suction surface of the stator is also improved by optimizing the stator blade. It is noted that the optimization of the stator blade is also useful method to increase the adiabatic efficiency in the axial compressor as well as the optimization of a rotor blade, which is widely used now.

The aerodynamic performance of a single-stage transonic axial compressor was experimentally evaluated by measuring pressure and temperature distribution at the inlet and outlet of the compressor. The compressor was developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute through multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) method, especially integrating aerodynamic performance and structural stability. The test results show that the pressure ratio is 1.65 and the efficiency is 85.8 % at design point, where the corrected speed is 22,000 rpm and the corrected mass flow rate is 15.4 kg/s, and it has a good agreement with the design target and computational results. The distribution of pressure ratio is very steep at design speed, compared with the trend of other subsonic compressors. Also the static pressure distribution on the stator casing shows that the blade loading is gradually increasing through the stage as designed.

Aerodynamic analysis of an airfoil in the transonic region was automated in order to enable parametric study by using the journal file of the commercial analysis code FLUENT, pre/post process Gambit and computational mathematics code MATLAB. The automated capability was illustrated via NACA 0012 and RAE 2822 airfoils. This analysis was carried out at Mach numbers ranged from 0.70 to 0.80, angles of attack; 1$^{\circ}$, 2$^{\circ}$ and 4$^{\circ}$, Reynolds numbers; 4.0${\times}$106, 6.5${\times}$106. The analysis results of a pressure coefficient were verified by comparing with the experimental data which were measured in terms of chord length because the pressure coefficient of an airfoil surface is a good estimator of flow characteristics. The results of two airfoils show that this analysis code is useful enough to be used in the design optimization of airfoil.

Transonic two-phase flow of Saturated humid air, in which relative humidity is 100%, with various condensation processes around thin airfoils is investigated. The study uses an extended transonic small-disturbance(TSD) model of Rusak and Lee [11, 12] which includes effects of heat addition to the flow due to condensation. Two possible limit types of condensation processes are considered. In the nonequilibrium and homogeneous process, the condensate mass fraction is calculated according to classical nucleation and droplet growth rate models. In the equilibrium process, the condensate mass fraction is calculated by assuming an isentropic process. The flow and condensation equations are solved numerical1y by iterative computations. Results under same upstream conditions describe the flow structure, field of condensate, and pressure distribution on airfoil's surfaces. It is found that flow characteristics, such as position and strength of shock waves and airfoil’s pressure distribution, are different for the two condensation processes. Yet, in each case, heat addition as a result of condensation causes significant changes in flow behavior and affects the aerodynamic performance of airfoils.

In this study, to find the characteristics of the oscillation of a terminating shock wave in a transonic airfoil flow with non-equilibrium condensation, a NACA00-12,14,15 airfoil flow with non-equilibrium condensation is investigated through numerical analysis of TVD scheme. Transonic free stream Mach number of 0.81-0.90 with the variation of stagnation relative humidity and airfoil thickness is tested. For the free stream Mach number 0.87 and attack angle of ${\alpha}=0^{\circ}$, the increase in stagnation relative humidity attenuates the strength of the terminating shock wave and inactivates the oscillation of the terminating shock wave. For the case of $M_{\infty}=0.87$ and ${\phi}_0=60%$, the decreasing rate in the frequency of the shock oscillation caused by non-equilibrium condensation to that of ${\phi}_0=30%$ amounts to 5%. Also, as the stagnation relative humidity gets larger, the maximum coefficient of drag and the difference between the maximum and minimum in $C_D$ become smaller. On the other hand, as the thickness of the airfoil gets larger, the supersonic bubble size becomes bigger and the oscillation of the shock wave becomes higher.

The flowfield around transonic wing-body configuration was simulated using in-house CFD code and compared with the experimental data to understand the influence of several features of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) ; grid dependency, turbulence models, spatial discretization, and viscosity. The wing-body configuration consists of a simple planform RAE Wing 'A' with an RAE 101 airfoil section and an axisymmetric body. The in-house CFD code is a compressible Euler/Navier-Stokes solver based on unstructured grid. For the turbulence model, the $k-{\omega}$ model, the Spalart-Allmaras model, and the $k-{\omega}$ SST model were applied. For the spatial discretization method, the central differencing scheme with Jameson's artificial viscosity and Roe's upwind differencing scheme were applied. The results calculated were generally in good agreement with experimental data. However, it was shown that the pressure distribution and shock-wave position were slightly affected by the turbulence models and the spatial discretization methods. It was known that the turbulent viscous effect should be considered in order to predict the accurate shock wave position.

The presented paper gives an overview of several projects addressing the experimental characterization and control of the buffet phenomenon on 3D turbulent wings in transonic flow conditions. This aerodynamic instability induces strong wall pressure fluctuations and therefore limits flight domain. Consequently, to enlarge the latter but also to provide more flexibility during the design phase, it is interesting to try to delay the buffet onset. This paper summarizes the main investigations leading to the achievement of open and closed-loop buffet control and its experimental demonstration. Several wind tunnel tests campaigns, performed on a 3D half wing/fuselage body, enabled to characterize the buffet aerodynamic instability and to study the efficiency of innovative fluidic control devices designed and manufactured by ONERA. The analysis of the open-loop databases demonstrated the effects on the usual buffet characteristics, especially on the shock location and the separation areas on the wing suction side. Using these results, a closed-loop control methodology based on a quasi-steady approach was defined and several architectures were tested for various parameters such as the input signal, the objective function, the tuning of the feedback gain. All closed-loop methods were implemented on a dSPACE device able to estimate in real time the fluidic actuators command calculated mainly from the unsteady pressure sensors data. The efficiency of delaying the buffet onset or limiting its effects was demonstrated using the quasi-steady closed-loop approach and tested in both research and industrial wind tunnel environments.

Investigations into cavity flows have been conducted for decades now, most of them being about zero-pressure-gradient flows entering a cavity on a straight wall. However, the flow over curved walls in real-life situations has not been fully investigated. As cavity flows on curved walls exert centrifugal force, these walls are likely to possess different features from straight walls. To verify this possibility, this study investigated cavity flows on curved walls. Using numerical method, the effect of two variables, namely, radius of curvature on a curved wall and inlet Mach number, were investigated for subsonic and supersonic cavity flows. The result demonstrates that the value of the peak pressure generated inside the cavity increases with the decrease in the radius of curvature on a curved wall or an increase in the inlet Mach number. The total pressure loss in the cavity also results in an increase in the cavity drag.
Modern aircraft fighters improve the maneuverability and performance with the RSS (Relaxed Static Stability) concept and therefore these aircrafts are susceptible to abrupt pitch-up in the transonic and moderate Angle-of-Attack (AoA) flight region where the shock wave is formed and the mean aerodynamic center is moved forward during deceleration. Also, the modeling of the aircraft flying in this flight region is very difficult due to complex flow filed and unpredictable dynamic characteristics and the model-based control design technique does not fully cover this problem. In this paper, we analyzed the performance of the TPMC (Transonic Pitching Moment Compensation) control based on the model-based IDI (Incremental Dynamic Inversion) and the Hybrid IDI based on the model and sensor based IDI during the SDT (Slow Down Turn) in transonic region. As the result, the Hybrid IDI had quicker response and the same maximum g suppression performance and provided the predictable flying qualities compared to the TPMC control. The Hybrid IDI improved the performance of the Over-G protection controller in the transonic and moderate AoA region
