  • In this paper, we propose a multi-cell cooperation method for broadcast packet data services in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based cellular system with multiple transmit antennas. In the proposed method, to transmit two streams of spatially demultiplexed or transmit diversity coded symbols over a number of transmit antennas, we divide a coded packet into multiple subparts to which different cell groups and antenna pairs are assigned. The proposed method enhances the diversity order by transforming the channel frequency responses of two symbol streams in each subpart of the broadcast packet. The increase in diversity of the proposed method is shown with the outage probability under various configurations.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of transmit diversity techniques which are the key technologies of the third generation mobile communication systems. Transmit diversity techniques adopted on the specification of 3GPP are classified into open-loop and closed-loop methods depending on the existence of feedback data. In WCDMA systems, the DPCH signal is space-time coded to provide a mobile station with diversity. Computer simulations shall be performed to analyze and compare their performance considering the effect of mobile speed, number of path, power control, and delay of feedback with the WCDMA slot format #13 for application to WCDMA systems.

  • Rayleigh fading due to multi-path degrades the mobile service quality, especially high data rate mobile services such as 1xEVDO and W-CDMA. The field test showed that down load date rate of 1xEVDO is seriously affected by Rayleigh fading. To reduce the effect of Rayleigh fading, transmit diversity was implemented in RF repeater. In field test, transmit diversity function increased the data rate about twice comparing with no transmit diversity repeater. Recently high data rate service is getting more important, so transmit diverstiy function will be an important function in repeater.

  • This paper proposes a novel transmit diversity technique, namely symbol split orthogonal transmit diversity (SS-OTD). In this technique, full path diversity and temporal diversity are achieved by combining orthogonal transmit diversity technique (OTD) technique with the symbol splitting method proposed by Meyer. Its performances is simulated for fundamental channels associated with the forward link of the IS-2000 system, and then compared with those of OTD and space-time spreading (STS). Our proposed method offers a 0.5-7.7dB performance improvement over OTD under various simulation environments and its performance is similar to STS. Moreover, compares with that of STS, the peak-to-average power ratio (PAR) of transmitted signals in SS-OTD is reduced by a maximal 1.35dB, which decreases the complexity of base station RF devices, such as power amplifiers. Thus, SS-OTD is comparable to STS in performance and superior to STS in the cost and efficiency of base station RF devices.

  • In this paper, the outage performance of multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems exploiting joint spatial and multiuser diversities is investigated for Rayleigh fading channels with outdated feedback. First, we derive closed-form exact outage probabilities for the joint diversity schemes that combine user scheduling with different spatial diversity techniques, including: 1) transmit maximum-ratio combining (TMRC); 2) transmit antenna selection (TAS); and 3) orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC). Then the asymptotic outage probabilities are analyzed to gain more insights into the effect of feedback delay. It is observed that with outdated feedback, the asymptotic diversity order of the multiuser OSTBC (M-OSTBC) scheme is equal to the number of transmit antennas at the base station, while that of the multiuser TMRC (M-TMRC) and the multiuser TAS (M-TAS) schemes reduce to one. Further by comparing the asymptotic outage probabilities, it is found that the M-TMRC scheme outperforms the M-TAS scheme, and the M-OSTBC scheme can perform best in the outage regime of practical interest when the feedback delay is large. Theoretical analysis is verified by simulation results.

  • In this paper, we propose a simple open loop transmit diversity (TD) scheme for the wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) systems in Rician multipath fading channels such as rural area or satellite channels where line-of-sight (LOS) paths are in presence. The proposed scheme does not require any pre-processing of transmit data, resulting in simpler structure as compared to conventional closed loop transmit adaptive array (TxAA) and open loop space-time transmit diversity (STTD). We analytically derive the probability density function of signal-to-noise ratio at the Rake receiver output and the uncoded bit error rate performance of the proposed scheme. Extensive simulation is Performed to verify the analytical performance of the proposed scheme under typical Rician multipath fading channel environments. Moreover, comparative results with the conventional TxAA and STTD are also provided. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme shows slightly better performance than the conventional open loop STTD under the channels with very weak LOS components, however, it significantly outperforms the STTD under the channels with dominant LOS components, and achieves a close performance of ideal closed loop TxAA.

  • In this paper, we investigate the performance of ARQ-aided downlink Time Switched Transmit Diversity (TSTD) in the WCDMA LCR-TDD system. Proposed TSTD system applies the ARQ scheme in which the receiver sends the response signal (ACK or NACK signal) to the transmitter and predicts the channel condition based on response signal after receiver checks the error, then it re-sends data. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed TSTD scheme yields about 5.5dB performance gain, compared with the conventional TSTD in term of the frame error rate(FER) for a mobile speed of 3km/h and an FER value of 1%. In addition, 7% of throughput gain is shown when Eb/N0=7dB.

  • In this paper, we extend ultra-wideband (UWB) single input single output (SISO) systems with a hybrid pulse amplitude and position modulation (PAPM) to single input multiple output (SIMO) systems using receive antenna diversity. The performance of a rake receive diversity combining scheme for UWB SIMO systems with a PAPM is examined in a log-normal multipath fading channel and also compared with that of a time-switched transmit diversity (TSTD) multiple input single output (MISO) system. It is seen that as the number of receive antennas increases, the receive diversity combining system improves the error performance. It is shown that the TSTD UWB MISO systems offer the performance equivalent to the receive diversity combining scheme for SIMO systems.

  • Transmit diversity schemes we an effective capacity improvement method for down link of wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) systems. In this paper, we propose to use transmit antenna subset selection scheme in conjunction with closed loop transmit adaptive array (TxAA). The proposed scheme selects N$\_$s/ optimum antennas among N$\_$${\gamma}$/(>N$\_$s/) transmit antennas in order to maximize diversity gain from selected antennas, and also reduces the cost of RE chains by employing two different types of RF modules fur the selected and the unselected antenna group, respectively. Computer simulation results show performance improvement by the proposed scheme over the conventional TxAA when considering up link control information feedback.

  • This paper investigates the outage behavior of peak interference power limited cognitive radio (CR) networks with multiple transmit antennas. In CR-multi-input single-output (MISO) channel, the total transmit power is distributed over the transmitantennas. First, we use the orthogonal space-time codes (STC) to achieve the transmit diversity at CR-receiver (rx) and investigate the effect of the power distribution on the interference power received at the primary-receiver (P-rx). Then, we investigate the transmit antenna selection (TAS) scheme in which the CR system selects the best transmit antenna and allocates all the power to the selected best antenna. Two transmit antenna selection strategies are proposed depending on if feedback channel is available or not. We derive the closed form expressions of outage probability and outage capacity of all schemes with arbitrary number of transmit-antennas. We show that the proposed schemes significantly improve the outage capacity over the single antenna systems in Rayleigh fading environment. We also show that TAS based scheme outperforms the STC based scheme when peak interference power constraint is imposed on the P-rx only if a feedback channel from CR-rx to CR-transmitter is available.
