Conceptual application methodology of 22.9㎸ HTS cable in metropolitan city of Republic of Korea

  • As the power demand has increased and power industry deregulation has progressed, the transmission and distribution system will have more complicated problems by the influence of investment reduction and NIMBY phenomena for overall power system. It is expected that the route length per MW demand will reduce gradually from 0.6[C-km/MW] to 0.53 [C-km/MW] in 2010. This comes up to a real serious problem of system planning and operational viewpoints. HTS technologies related to power system have properties to solve these complex transmission and distribution constraints, especially for metropolitan area, in the future. As the HTS technology has developed, the HTS cable technology can be the most effective alternative to solve the future expected power network constraints. This paper describes the application methodology of developing 22.9㎸ HTS cable by CAST for practical distribution system. 22.9㎸ HTS cable under development with step-by-step application methodology can substitute the existing and planning conventional 154㎸ cable. If this scheme is applied, part of downtown 154㎸ substation of metropolitan city such as Seoul can be changed into 22.9㎸ switching station. It can give great economic, environmental and additional benefits to all of the concerned authorities.

  • The importance of conducting necessary studies on grid reliability evaluation has become increasingly important in recent years due to the number of blackout events occurring throughout the world. Additionally, quantitative evaluation of transmission system reliability is very important in a competitive electricity environment. The reason behind this is that successful operation of an electric power company under a deregulated electricity market depends on transmission system reliability management. The results of many case studies for the Korea Electric Power Cooperation (KEPCO) system using the Transmission Reliability Evaluation for Large-Scale Systems (TRELSS) Version 6.2 are illustrated in this paper. The TRELSS was developed by EPRI and Southern Company Services Inc. This paper presents the reliability analysis of KEPCO system expansion planning by using the TRELSS program.

  • The outage cost has very important position for determination of the optimal level or optimal range of reliability in power system expansion planning. Establishing the worth of service reliability is a very difficult and subjective task. This paper suggests strategies for the role, need and assessment algorithm and methodology of the outage cost in power system expansion planning. Organization, data collections and method about D/B for outage cost assessment is proposed in the this study.

  • Because contemporary rolling stock system is complex and highly advanced, and it builds mutual interface, it is necessary to manage maintenance of rolling stock systematically. This study present a case, which shows how to adopt and apply RTD(Remote Transmission Device) integrated to train information collection device. After the train service is complete and the train enters the main subway station, various kinds of information collected from TCMS(Train Control Monitoring System) is transmitted to train depot information collection device through RTD. This study suggests that RTD integrated to train information collection device helps build an effective rolling stock maintenance system by improving reliability of data transmission and cutting maintenance costs.

  • Fuzzy theory is used to quantify some subjective criteria and consider uncertain factors for transmission line reinforcement planning in this paper. Sugeno's fuzzy integral is also used in the proposed method, because it can be easily allied to multi attribute decision making problems such as power system planning. To verify the proposed algorithm, some bode-neck lines are searched for the case that the amount of Maximal Load Supplying Capability(MLSC) is small using the results of contingency analysis for Korea Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO)'s 345[kV] transmission line in 1998. And several feasible alternatives are composed for line reinforcement which can dissolve the bottle-neck.

  • We propose and develop Home Security robot system based on Sensor Network (HSSN) configured by sensor nodes including radio frequency (RF), ultrasonic, temperature, light and sound sensors. Our system can acknowledge security alarm events that are acquired by sensor nodes and relayed in the hop-by-hop transmission way. There are sensor network, Home Security Mobile Robot (HSMR) and Home Server(HS) in this system. In the experimental results of this system, we presented that our system has more enhanced performance of response to emergency context and more speedy and accurate path planning to target position for arriving an alarm zone with obstacle avoidance and acquiring the context-aware information.

Generation Expansion Planning Model Supporting Diverse Environmental Policies for Reduction of Greenhouse Gases

  • The purpose of this paper is to a develop model for generation expansion planning that can support diverse environmental policies for the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs) of South Korea. South Korea is required to reduce its GHG emissions by 30% from the BAU level by 2020. The Wien Automatic System Planning Package currently used in South Korea has limitations in terms of the application of renewable energy policies and GHG targets; this paper proposes the use of an equipment planning model named generation and transmission expansion program, which has been developed to resolve such limitations. For verification of the model, a case study on the 6th Basic Plan of Long-Term Electricity Supply and Demand has been conducted. The results show that for the year 2020 South Korea's annual GHG emissions will be 36.6% more than the GHG Target Management System (GHG TMS) target set for the same year (30%). To achieve the GHG TMS target, the costs involved amount to about 72 trillion KRW (70 billion USD). Consequently, the South Korean government needs to review the performability of this target.

  • In operation of distribution system, $DG_s$ Distributed Generations) are installed as an alternative of extension and establishment of substations and transmission and distribution lines according to increasing power demand. In operation planning of $DG_s$, determining optimal capacity and allocation gets economical pro(it and improves power reliability. This paper proposes determining a optimal number, size and allocation of $DG_s$ needed to minimize operation cost of distribution system. Capacity of $DG_s$ (or economical operation of distribution system estimated by the load growth and line capacity during operation planning duration, DG allocations are determined to minimize total cost with power buying cost. operation cost of DG, loss cost and outage cost using GA(Genetic Algorithm).

  • The mission of the TTC system is to acquire and process the telemetry data from the satellite and to provide mission planning and satellite control for the target stellite system. In this paper, the transmission scheme for the Tracking, Telemetry and Command(TTC) system of satelliteis described and determined according to the recommendation of CCSDS, and the channel characteristics are analyzed according to modulation method. Expecially, we introduced the concepts of carrier vs. telemetry data power ratio which causes the channel performance to degrade, and analyzed the effects of transmission performance according to the power ratio of carrier vs. telemetry data and the modulation index. The channel of the LEO TTC sytem is different with usual satellite communication system. So, we have generalized the link budget of TTC sytem for using the link budget of ground station well-known and proposed the determination method of modultion indices for improveing channel performance.

  • Whenever the accidents occur in the railway areas, their prompt recovery is very important. The individual way has been used to resolve these accidents by direct visiting the site and reporting to others who cares for these cases. As a result, we are planning to operate the MTS (Moving picture Transmission System) for a timely information's transmission to the related peoples in the central control center by transforming the picture information on the accident-site to the digital information. The proposed system is not a transmission system using exclusive lines, but utilizing the existing railway computer network. We construct a network server device so that a dispatcher can easily connect with the server through the railway intranet. In some railway environments such as disturbed field situations and geographical condition(in tunnels and bridges, etc) building up the wired network is difficult. Solving this problem, we reviewed the wireless network. Finally we proposed the mixed wireless network that is able to cover the wired network. We then installed and tested the wired network and wireless network respectively in wayside of a railway field. Through the testing, we identified many detailed matters for some network construction approaches to the control room and many field device-connecting schemes. This research will contribute to minimize the number of staff dispatched to a disturbed field, decrease the accident recovery time and improve the quality of service to the passenger.
