To increase the capacity of hydrogen adsorption, transition metals were adopted as catalyst. The PAN-based CNFs involving transition metal were obtained by electrospinning method and heat treatment. To study the surface of carbon fibers, SEM analysis was conducted. The mass of transition metals were spreaded or covered among CNFs. XRD and EDX analysis were used to confirm transition metals on the surface of carbon fibers. Volumetric method was used for studying the capacity of hydrogen adsorption on the carbon fibers involving transition metals. In this study. vanadium has the best characteristics among chromium, titanium, and copper for hydrogen adsorption.

Ambient urban particulate matters contain various transition metals. When the particulate matters are inhaled into the lung, not all but some part of metals from the particles might be mobilized to participate in a reaction that can damage various biomolecules, such as DNA and proteins. The dust particle size as well as organic acids may influence the metal mobilization. Thus, the mobilization of the metal from SRM1648 (NIST, USA) and urban particulate matters (PM2.5 and PM10) was measured in the presence of artificial or biological chelator with or without reductant. The degree of the mobilization was higher with the artificial or biological chelator than the control with saline. In some cases, a reductant increased the mobilization as much as about 5 times the control without the reductant. Especially, the mobilization of Fe was greatly influenced by the presence of reductants. In general, the degree of the mobilization of the transition metal was higher with PM2.5 than with PM10. Therefore, it is expected that, considering the previously known toxicities of the transition metals, the PM2.5 is more damaging to various biomolecules than PM10. The results also suggest that not the total amount but the mobilizable fraction of the metal in the dust particles should be considered with regard to the toxicity of the urban particulate matters.
The structural and magnetic properties of functionalized carbon chains doped with 4d transition metals, such as Ru, Rh, and Pd, were investigated using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. The carbon nanowire doped with Ru exhibited a ferromagnetic ground state with a sizable magnetic moment, while those doped with Rh and Pd had nonmagnetic ground states. For the Ru-doped chain, the density of states at the Fermi level showed large spin polarization, which suggests that the doped nanowire could be used for spintronic applications.
The cation exchange chromatographic studies for the analysis of transition metals have been described. The quantitative separation of a mixture of Fe(Ⅲ), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Co(II) and Mn(II) has been obtained by elution, through a 28cm column of the resin, Dowex 50 ${\times}$ 4 (100∼200 mesh), using 0.45 M $NaNO_3$+0.05 M Na-tartrate solution as eluent, starting with the eluent of pH 3.5, followed stepwise by pH 4.0 and 4.5. A comparison between the calculated and the observed peak positions in the elution curve has been shown. The relative stability constants for tartrate complexes of some transition metals have been calculated by using distribution ratios obtained in this separation procedure.
Transition metals tested, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Ni^{2+}$, were found effective in the induction of the cytotoxicity of the quinolones tested, nalidixic acid, oxolinic acid, and pipemidic acid, against L1210 leukemia cells in vitro, whereas the alkaline earth metal, $Mg^{2+}$, was not. The differential effect of the metals on the quinolone cytotoxicity can be explained by their different mode of interaction with the quinolones. Our present difference spectroscopic titration data suggest that the transition metals can form DNA-intercalating agents, with the quinolones, which can cause the cytotoxicity.
Alumina-supported catalysts containing different transition metals such as Cu, Cr, Mn, Zn, Co, W were investigated for their activity in the selective oxidation of toluene. Catalytic oxidation of toluene was investigated at atmospheric pressure in a fixed bed flow reactor system over transition metals with $Al_2O_3$ catalyst. The result showed the order of catalytic activities for the complete oxidation of toluene was Mn > Cu> Cr> Co> W> Zn for 5wt.% transition $metals/Al_2O_3$. $Mn/Al_2O_3$ catalysts containing different amount of Mn were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy for decision of loading amount of metal to alumina. 5 wt.%$Mn/Al_2O_3$ catalyst exhibits the highest catalytic activity, over which the toluene conversion was up to 90% at a temperature of $289^{\circ}C$.
Nitrogen (N)-doped ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) with a dual transition metal system were synthesized as non-Pt catalysts for the ORR. The highly nitrogen doped OMCs were prepared by the precursor of ionic liquid (3-methyl-1-butylpyridine dicyanamide) for N/C species and a mesoporous silica template for the physical structure. Mostly, N-doped carbons are promoted by a single transition metal to improve catalytic activity for ORR in PEMFCs. In this study, our N-doped mesoporous carbons were promoted by the dual transition metals of iron and cobalt (Fe, Co), which were incorporated into the N-doped carbons lattice by subsequently heat treatments. All the prepared carbons were characterized by via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To evaluate the activities of synthesized doped carbons, linear sweep was recorded in an acidic solution to compare the ORR catalytic activities values for the use in the PEMFC system. The dual transition metal promotion improved the ORR activity compared with the single transition metal promotion, due to the increase in the quaternary nitrogen species from the structural change by the dual metals. The effect of different ratio of the dual metals into the N doped carbon were examined to evaluate the activities of the oxygen reduction reaction.

The multi-component olivine cathode material, $LiMn_{1/3}Fe_{1/3}Co_{1/3}PO_4$, was prepared via a novel coprecipitation method of the mixed transition metal oxalate, $Mn_{1/3}Fe_{1/3}Co_{1/3}(C_2O_4){\cdot}2H_2O$. The stoichiometric ratio and distribution of transition metals in the oxalate, therefore, in the olivine product, was affected sensitively by the environments in the coprecipitation process, while they are the important factors in determining the electrochemical property of electrode materials with multiple transition metals. The effect of the pH, atmosphere, temperature, and aging time was investigated thoroughly with respect to the atomic ratio of transition metals, phase purity, and morphology of the mixed transition metal oxalate. The electrochemical activity of each transition metal in the olivine synthesized through this method clearly was enhanced as indicated in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge measurement. Three distinctive contributions from Mn, Fe, and Co redox couples were detected reversibly in multiple charge and discharge processes. The first discharge capacity at the C/5 rate was $140.5\;mAh\;g^{-1}$ with good cycle retention. The rate capability test showed that the high capacity still is retained even at the 4C and 6C rates with 102 and $81\;mAh\;g^{-1}$, respectively.
High oxygen pressures appear an important tool in Solid State Chemistry. Two main routes can be developed: (i) the stabilization of thermally unstable oxides, used as precursors, in order to open the synthesis of new materials, (ii) the stabilization of the highest oxidation states of transition metals. This paper is essentially devoted to this second research axis. The methodology developed for preparing new oxides containing Fe(Ⅴ), Ir(Ⅵ), high spin Fe(Ⅳ) and Cu(Ⅲ) is described.
