  • A mathematical heat transfer model for the prediction of heat flux on the slab surface and temperature distribution in the slab has been developed by considering the thermal radiation in the furnace and transient conduction governing equations in the slab, respectively. The furnace is modeled as radiating medium with spatially varying temperature and constant absorption coefficient. The slab is moved with constant speed through non-firing, charging, preheating, heating, and soaking zones in the furnace. Radiative heat flux which is calculated from the radiative heat exchange within the furnace modeled using the FVM by considering the effect of furnace wall, slab, and combustion gases is applied as the boundary condition of the transient conduction equation of the slab. Heat transfer characteristics and temperature behavior of the slab is investigated by changing such parameters as absorption coefficient and emissivity of the slab. Comparison with the experimental work shows that the present heat transfer model works well for the prediction of thermal behavior of the slab in the reheating furnace.

  • Currently, flat cover glasses are widely applied to mobile devices. However, for a good design and for convenience of use, curved cover glasses are in demand. Thus, many companies are attempting to produce curved cover glasses using a shaving technique, but the production efficiency is very low. Therefore, a molding technique has been adopted to increase the efficiency of curved glass production systems. For a glass molding system, a uniform temperature distribution of the mold is crucial to produce high-quality curved cover glasses. Before setting the heating conditions of the molding system for a uniform temperature distribution by a thermal analysis, verification is required. Therefore, in this study, temperature measurements were conducted for a prototype molding system and the experimental results were compared with simulation computations. The temperatures of the heating block surface were in good agreement with the computational results for transient and steady conditions.

  • Temperature distribution, transformation and residual stresses generated during the quenching process of carbon steel. It follows many difficulties in the analytical considerations on those quenching process because of the coupling effects on temperature and metallic structures. In this paper one of the basic study on the quenching stresses was carried out for the case of the round steel bar specimen(SM45C) with 40mm both in its diameter and length. The temperature distributions considering strain hysteresis were numerically calculated by finite element technique. In calculating the transient temperature field, the heat flux between water and rod surface was determined from the heat transfer coefficient. The gradient of temperature is almost same to geometric of specimen. At early stage of the quenching process, the abrupt temperature gradient has been shown in the surface of the specimen.

  • In the present paper a 3D thermo-hygro-mechanical model for concrete is used to study explosive spalling of concrete cover at high temperature. For a given boundary conditions the distribution of moisture, pore pressure, temperature, stresses and strains are calculated by employing a three-dimensional transient finite element analysis. The used thermo-hygro-mechanical model accounts for the interaction between hygral and thermal properties of concrete. Moreover, these properties are coupled with the mechanical properties of concrete, i.e., it is assumed that the mechanical properties (damage) have an effect on distribution of moisture (pore pressure) and temperature. Stresses in concrete are calculated by employing temperature dependent microplane model. To study explosive spalling of concrete cover, a 3D finite element analysis of a concrete slab, which was locally exposed to high temperature, is performed. It is shown that relatively high pore pressure in concrete can cause explosive spalling. The numerical results indicate that the governing parameter that controls spalling is permeability of concrete. It is also shown that possible buckling of a concrete layer in the spalling zone increases the risk for explosive spalling.

  • The characteristics of heat conduction for the heat source boundary like an arch shape cavern are different from those for the semi-infinite or circular boundary which can be driven theoretically. A new form of transient heat conduction equation in rock mass around the arch shape cavern is evaluated with analyzing the pattern of the rock temperature distribution measured at the cold storage pilot plant. The new equation, which is driven by adopting a shape function, $SF=\sqrt{logx_0/log(x_0+x)}$ to the solution for a semi-infinite boundary, has the semi-radial form of temperature variation with distance. And, thermal properties of rock mass are estimated by comparing the rock temperature distributions by this equation with those by measurement. Thermal conductivity and specific heat of rock mass are estimated as giving the difference of 20~25% compared to those of laboratory scale. This difference seems to be caused by discontinuity like joint and water content in rock mass.

  • This study is focused on developing a software that predicts the temperature distribution and infrared Emission from 30 objects considering the solar radiation through the atmosphere. The solar radiation through the atmosphere is modeled by using the well-known LOWTRAN7 code. Surface temperature information is essential for generating the infrared scene of the object. Predictions of the transient surface temperature and the infrared emission from a naval ship by using the software developed here show fairly good results by representing the typical temperature and emitted radiance distributions expected for the naval ship considered in mid latitude. Emissivity of each material is appeared to be an important parameter for recognizing the target in Infrared band region. The numerical results also show that the low emissivity surface on the heat source can be helpful in reducing the IR image contrast as compared to the background sea.

  • We analyze heat generation as well as temperature distribution induced by accelerated electron impact on a target in a closed x-ray tube. For the sake of accuracy, we use Monte carlo analysis. This method gives accurate energy deposit in a medium with additional information such as secondary and backscattered electron as well as their paths. A Tungsten coated layer is divided by small rectangular cell which accumulate energy loss of primary electron beam. The cells and their accumulated energy datum are used for the input of finite element analysis. The Maximum temperature rising and temperature distribution were analyzed by transient heat analysis. Some temperature parameters such as target size and coating thickness were varied to investigate temperature sensitivity. Temperatures were compared each other to find primary variable that affect temperature rising on the x-ray target. The results will be helpful in development highresolution x-ray tube and related industries.

  • A novel joining technology was developed to compensate the camber in polymers. The preheating laser beam circulates on the joining location and the accumulated heat serves to increase the flexibility of neighboring polymers. The temperature rises up to the glass transient temperature of the polymers and continually loading spring force closes the gap of camber. The irradiated laser was 808nm central wavelength and the power varied between 2Watt and 5Watt. The laps were adjusted between 3 and 10 and the optimum process parameters were 3Watt and 5 laps for the specific application. An FEM analysis was introduced to understand the mechanism of joining by the transient temperature distribution on the polymers. Thermocouples experiments were also tried to correlate the numerical analysis results and it showed the trend of heat accumulation in experiments.

  • Power demand has continuously increased with technological and economical development. The load density is also growing in the center of downtown area. In particular, underground facilities have been increased on the purpose of the prevention of urban disasters and pedestrian environment improvement. Based on this situation, the underground space in urban surroundings has gradually decreased because of the limited space. The ampacity of buried cables is affected by various factors such as cable size, soil thermal resistance, burial depth and filling material. The thermal capacity of the facilities is determined by the absorb heat surrounding the cable and the soil. The maximum operating temperature of cable is the highest temperature when the insulator of cable is not damaged in the case of high enough temperature. In this paper, the most effective cabling configuration is suggested using the duct array adjustment. It was also considered to increase the number of cable line. This underground distribution system was simulated by using ETAP(Electrical Transient Analysis Program).

  • This study aimed to analyze the deck floor heating system of an outdoor swimming pool in terms of the thermal capacity/output and the surface temperature distribution based on the outdoor temperature, to design for anti-freezing during winter. Through the transient heat transfer simulation with PHYSIBEL and theoretical equations, the surface temperature distribution of the floor heating system at two outdoor conditions in Jeju, were calculated and evaluated. The results indicate that the specific thermal output required for maintaining $4^{\circ}C$ surface temperature at the design outdoor temperature of $0.1^{\circ}C$, was about $90W/m^2$. This performance analysis can be applied for future design criteria, including optimizations of system capacity and size.
