  • This paper presents a windows program package for solving security constrained OPF in interconnected power systems, which is based on the combined application of evolutionary programming(EP) and sequential quadratic programming(SQP). The objective functions are the minimization of generation fuel costs and system power losses. The control variables are the active power of the generating units, the voltage magnitude of the generator, transformer tap settings and SVC setting. The state variables are the bus voltage magnitude, the reactive power of the generating unit, line flows and the tie line flow. In OPF considering security, the outages are selected by contingency ranking method. The resulting optimal operating point has to be feasible after outages such as any single line outage(respect of voltage magnitude, reactive power generation and power flow limits). The OPF package proposed is applied to 10 machines 39 buses model system.

  • The wind power plant must be able to produce reactive power at the POI bus of a wind farm connected to power system to keep or control the voltage of POI bus. But, the reactive power capability of wind turbines may not be sufficient to control the voltage of POI bus due to the reactive power losses in connection lines between wind farm and POI bus. The solution of this problem is to install an external STATCOM. The proposed cooperative control method of STATCOM and conventional reactive power compensators such as Switched-shunt and tap changing transformer can control the voltage of POI bus more efficiently. The simulation results are shown that the voltage drop of POI Bus of Test System with the arbitrary load change rate to initial loads is improved more than 60% and the voltage of load bus is maintained more than 95% of rated voltage.

  • The applications of Distributed Generation (DG) in a smart distribution grid environment are widely employed especially for power balancing and supporting demand responses. Using these applications can have both positive and negative impacts on the distribution system. The sizing and location of their installations are the issues that should be taken into consideration to gain the maximum benefit from them when considering the economic aspects. This paper presents an application of the Bat Algorithm (BA) for the optimal sizing and siting of DG in a smart distribution power system in order to maximize the Benefit to Cost Ratio (BCR), subjected to system constraints including real and reactive power generation, line and transformer loading, voltage profile, energy losses, fault level as well as DG operating limits. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and the impact of considering economic issues on DG placement, a simplify 9-bus radial distribution system of the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand (PEA) is selected for the computer simulation to explore the benefit of the optimal DG placement and the performance of the proposed approach.

  • The importance of the Load Power Factor(LPF) management is newly noticed from the voltage management and operation of the power system due to the rapidly increasing reactive power consumed. Therefore, this paper proposes the regional, seasonal and hourly Representative Model of Load Power Factor(RMLPF) considering load characteristics of all 154/22.9[kV] substations. The RMLPF is used to present a precision improvement of power system analysis and security. Computation of representative model of load utilizes the average flow method based on moving average method. The Energy Management System(EMS) data are used as the source to assess the load power factor.

  • This paper proposes a three-level LLC resonant converter using integrated magnetics (IM). Given that the switch voltage stress of the proposed converter is guaranteed to be half of the input voltage, the switching losses can be greatly reduced, thereby benefitting the high-frequency operation. To reduce the volume of reactive components such as transformers, high-frequency driving and planar core are applied. However, two resonant inductors and one transformer are required because of the three-level structure and the limited leakage inductance of the planar transformer for the resonant operation. Therefore, the effect of volume reduction is not very large. In order to solve these drawbacks, this paper proposes a new IM that integrates all magnetic elements used in the proposed three-level resonant converter by using the magnetizing inductor as a resonant inductor. The experimental results are presented by conducting a theoretical analysis of a prototype with 350 W to 800 kHz.

  • In this paper, a 1.5 kW Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (IPMSG) with a power conditioner for the grid integration of a variable-speed wind turbine is developed. The power-conditioning system consists of a series-type 12-pulse diode rectifier powered by a phase shifting transformer and then cascaded to a PWM voltage source inverter. The PWM inverter is utilized to supply sinusoidal currents to the utility line by controlling the active and reactive current components in the q-d rotating reference frame. While the q-axis active current of the PWM inverter is regulated to follow an optimized active current reference so as to track the maximum power of the wind turbine. The d-axis reactive current can be adjusted to control the reactive power and voltage. In order to track the maximum power of the wind turbine, the optimal active current reference is determined by using a simple MPPT algorithm which requires only three sensors. Moreover, the phase angle of the utility voltage is detected using a simple electronic circuit consisting of both a zero-crossing voltage detecting circuit and a counter circuit employed with a crystal oscillator. At the generator terminals, a passive filter is designed not only to decrease the harmonic voltages and currents observed at the terminals of the IPMSG but also to improve the generator efficiency. The laboratory results indicate that the losses in the IPMSG can be effectively reduced by setting a passive filter at the generator terminals.

  • Among the variable-speed AC motor drive systems, the static slip power recovery system has been widely adopted in large power drives because a high efficiency drive can be obtained by recovering the slip power to the AC line. Although many improvements have been made in this system, several problems also remain such as the need of transformer in inverter AC side, which results in limiting speed control range and increasing the losses, production of reactive power by the control of inverter firing angle, harmonics in line currents, and so on. This paper presents the novel high performance slip power recovery system using the boost converter and small size filter in the rotor circuit, which recovers slip power of a wound rotor induction machine to AC supply efficiently with the aid of the boost converter, in which most of the problems in conventional system can be solved. The speed can be controlled by the duty ratio of the converter switch, not by inverter firing angle. As a results, the proposed system can operate in high power factor and the harmonic currents caused by the inverter and rectifier can be considerably suppressed. The validity of the proposed system verified by demonstrating the good agreement in the simulation and experimental results.
