  • Oil-based nanofluids are prepared by dispersing spherical and fiber-shaped $Al_2O_3$ and AlN nanoparticles in transformer oil. Two hydrophobic surface modification processes are compared in this investigation. It is obvious that the combination of nanoparticle, surfactant and surface modification process is very important for the dispersity of nanofluids. For ($Al_2O_3$+AIN) particles with 1% volume fraction, the enhancement of thermal conductivity and convective heat transfer coefficient is nearly 11% and 30%, respectively, compared to pure transformer oil. The cooling effect of ($Al_2O_3$+AlN)-oil nanofluids on the heating element and oil itself is confirmed by a natural convection test using a prototype transformer.

  • In order to improve the efficiency of a main transformer in a train, the optimal operation of a cooling system is necessary. For the development of optimal control algorithms of a cooling system, mathematical models of a main transformer cooling system were developed. These include static and dynamic models of a main transformer, an oil pump, an oil cooler, and a blower. Static models were used to find optimal oil temperatures of the inlet and the outlet of a transformer. Dynamic models were used to predict transient performances of control algorithms of a blower and an oil pump. Simulation results showed good predictions of the static and the dynamic behavior of a main transformer cooling system. Therefore, mathematical models developed in this study may be effectively used for the development of control algorithms of a main transformer cooling system.

  • Accidents can occur as a result of streaming electrification when transformer oil is used as an insulating oil in large ultra-high voltage transformers. Methods for adding a streaming electrification inhibitor to reduce the streaming electrification has been studied extensively. In this paper, in order to develop a method for reducing streaming electrification effectively, 4 different specimens were prepared by the addition of benzotriazole (BTA) to a virgin specimen with constant stirring. The specimens were examined to determine the appropriate amount of BTA addition that would suppress the streaming electrification most effectively. The results showed that the streaming electrification characteristics of the specimen in the streaming transformer oil were best when the amount of BTA addition was about 10 ppm. The streaming electrification current was reduced by adding 30 ppm BTA until the temperature reached $65^{\circ}C$. The polarity of the streaming electrification current was negative when the temperature exceeded $65^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the streaming electrification current, which can be a cause of transformer accidents, can be suppressed in large ultra high voltage transformer oil. This paper reports on the optimal amount of BTA addition and the best conditions for controlling the streaming velocity of transformer oil.

  • It is well known that the degradation of transformer oil conseqently lead to the failure of transformer. This paper discussed the characteristics of the degradation sensor checking transformer oil condition in live line. The degadation sensor is composed of base ring, electrodes and porous ceramic, passed through the transformer oil and checks the transformer oil condition through sensor's leakage current. So it is important to minimize the leakage current of base ring and connection parts. To investigate the leakage current of base ring and connection parts the characteristics of V-T-I and DC 2 KV and other examinations were performed. It is verified that ionized transformer oil caused by the expansion of temperature increases in the leakage current of porous ceramic sensor. It is certification that the leakage current of other parts of porous ceramic is very small(about 2%) compared with the porous ceramic body and it is confirmed that the leakage current in porous ceramic is changed sensitively according to the new oil(NO) and and the degradation oil(DO).

  • In this paper, the temperature distribution according to the property change of the insulating oil of the power transformer and max temperature were predicted through the ductility interpretation which heat-flow is coupled. By using CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics) for the interpretation, the temperature distribution of 154kV the class single phase power transformer was predicted. The power loss causing the temperature rise of the transformer was changed to the heat source and we used as the input value for the heat-flow analysis. The temperature distribution was predicted according to the change of the density, specific heat, thermal conductivity and viscosity, that is the ingredient having an effect on the temperature rise of the transformer oil. The mineral oil of 4 kinds used in domestic and international based on the interpreted result was selected and the temperature distribution according to each load and Hot Spot temperature was predicted.

  • When oil flows and rubs against various materials in transformer, electrostatic charges are separated at the interface of the oil and the solid material. Using simplified model transformer, authors investigated the basic characteristics of the streaming electrifica-tion which is caused by forced oil circulation. As the result of the study, it was concluded that the electrostatic charge distribution on test pipe of the transformer showed larger leakage current at the inlet and the outlet.

  • In order to improve the efficiency of the main transformer in a tilting train, the optimal operation of a cooling system is necessary. For the development of the optimal control algorithm of a cooling system, the mathematical model of a main transformer cooling system was developed. This includes the dynamic model of a main transformer, an oil pump, an oil cooler and a blower. The system algorithm of a cooling system, which consists of the temperature setpoint algorithm and the temperature control algorithm, was developed. Optimal oil temperatures of the inlet and the outlet of the main transformer were obtained by considering the total electric power consumption of the system. The oil inlet temperature was controlled by the blower and the oil outlet temperature was controlled by the oil pump. A simulation program was developed by using the mathematical model and the system algorithm. Simulation results showed that the system algorithm developed from this study may be effectively used to control the main transformer cooling system in a tilting train.

  • This paper described an instrument for the detection and geometric location of partial discharge(PD) sources in oil transformer. This instrument measures electric current pulse and ultrasonic pulse simultaneously in order to determine the geometric location of PD in transformer. Laboratory experiment systems are made for detection and location of PD in oil transformer. It was observed that there are effects of the barrier, such as insulation papers, silicon steel plate and actual transformer with location and detection of PD in model transformer. Through the laboratory actual test, it was clarified that this measurement device could be used satisfactorily for location of pd in oil transformer.

  • This paper presents the general recommendations for the overload criterions of mineral-oil-immersed distribution transformers rated 100kVA and less. For this purpose, we analyze the characteristics of top-oil temperature rising for mineral-oil-immersed power distribution transformer rated 100kVA and less, manufactured in Korea, In order to analyze the characteristics of top-oil temperature rising due to the distribution transformer loading, we performed experiments at KERI (Korea Electrical Research Institute) from December 2000 to May 2001. The restraint of ambient temperatures for the experiment results is solved using the results of foreign standards. Finally, we present the overload criterions of distribution transformer for summer and winter season, respectively.
