This research focuses on the relationship between mathematics and visual art from a perspective of chaos theory which emerged under the influence of post-modernism. Culture and history, which transform dynamically with the passing of time, are models of complexity. Especially, when the three periods of Medieval, Renaissance, and 17-18 Centuries are observed, the Renaissance period is phase transition phenomenon era between Medieval and 17-18 Centuries. The transition stage between the late Medieval times and the Renaissance; and the stage between the Renaissance and the Modern times are also phase transitions. These phenomena closely resemble similarity in Fractal theory, which includes the whole in a partial structure. Phase transition must be preceded by fluctuation. In addition to the pioneers' prominent act of creation in the fields of mathematics and visual an serving as drive behind change, other socio-cultural factors also served as motivations, influencing the transformation of the society through interdependency. In particular, this research focuses on the fact that scientific minds of artists in the Renaissance stimulated the birth of Perspective Geometry.
Metallic shape memory alloys present fascinating physical properties such as their super-elastic behavior in austenite phase, which can be exploited for providing a structure with both a self-centering capability and an increased ductility. More or less accurate numerical models have been introduced to model their behavior along the last 25 years. This is the reason for which the literature is rich of suggestions/proposals on how to implement this material in devices for passive and semi-active control. Nevertheless, the thermo-mechanical coupling characterizing the first-order martensite phase transformation process results in several macroscopic features affecting the alloy performance. In particular, the effects of day-night and winter-summer temperature excursions require special attention. This aspect might imply that the deployment of some devices should be restricted to indoor solutions. A further aspect is the dependence of the behavior from the geometry one adopts. Two fundamental lacks of symmetry should also be carefully considered when implementing a SMA-based application: the behavior in tension is different from that in compression, and the heating is easy and fast whereas the cooling is not. This manuscript focuses on the passive devices recently proposed in the literature for civil engineering applications. Based on the challenges above identified, their actual feasibility is investigated in detail and their long term performance is discussed with reference to their fatigue life. A few available semi-active solutions are also considered.
Structural integrity can be accessed from dynamic deformations of structures. Moreover, dynamic deformations can be acquired from non-contact sensors such as video cameras. Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi (KLT) algorithm is one of the commonly used methods for motion tracking. However, averaging throughout the extracted features would induce bias in the measurement. In addition, pixel-wise measurements can be converted to physical units through camera intrinsic. Still, the depth information is unreachable without prior knowledge of the space information. The assigned homogeneous coordinates would then mismatch manually selected feature points, resulting in measurement errors during coordinate transformation. In this study, a two-stage optimization method for video-based measurements is proposed. The manually selected feature points are first optimized by minimizing the errors compared with the homogeneous coordinate. Then, the optimized points are utilized for the KLT algorithm to extract displacements through inverse projection. Two additional criteria are employed to eliminate outliers from KLT, resulting in more reliable displacement responses. The second-stage optimization subsequently fine-tunes the geometry of the selected coordinates. The optimization process also considers the number of interpolation points at different depths of an image to reduce the effect of out-of-plane motions. As a result, the proposed method is numerically investigated by using a truss bridge as a physics-based graphic model (PBGM) to extract high-accuracy displacements from recorded videos under various capturing angles and structural conditions.
Pore network models are useful tools to investigate soil pore geometry. These models provide quantitative information of pore geometry from 3D images. This study presents a pore network model to quantify pore structure and hydraulic characteristics. The objectives of this work were to apply the pore network model to characterize pore structure from large images to quantify pore structure, calculate water retention and hydraulic conductivity properties from a three dimensional soil image, and to combine measured hydraulic properties from experiments with calculated hydraulic properties from image. Soil samples were taken from a site located at the Baltimore science center, which is located inside of the city. Undisturbed columns were taken from the site and scanned with a computer tomographer at resolutions of 22 ${\mu}m$. Pore networks were extracted by medial-axis transformation and were used to measure pore geometry from one of the scanned samples. Water retention and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity values were calculated from the soil image. Properties of soil bulk density, water retention and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity were measured from three replicates of scanned soil samples. 3D image analysis provided accurate detailed pore properties such as individual pore volumes, pore length, and tortuosity of all pores. These data made possible to calculate accurate estimations of water retention and hydraulic conductivity. Combination of the calculated and measured hydraulic properties gave more accurate information on pore sizes over wider range than measured or calculated data alone. We could conclude that the hydraulic property computed from soil images and laboratory measurements can describe a full structure of intra- and inter-aggregate pores in soil.

This paper concerns extracting 3D motion information from a 3D input device in real time focused to enabling effective human-computer interaction. In particular, we develop a novel algorithm for extracting 6 degrees-of-freedom motion information from a 3D input device by employing an epipolar geometry of stereo camera, color, motion, and structure information, free from requiring the aid of camera calibration object. To extract 3D motion, we first determine the epipolar geometry of stereo camera by computing the perspective projection matrix and perspective distortion matrix. We then incorporate the proposed Motion Adaptive Weighted Unmatched Pixel Count algorithm performing color transformation, unmatched pixel counting, discrete Kalman filtering, and principal component analysis. The extracted 3D motion information can be applied to controlling virtual objects or aiding the navigation device that controls the viewpoint of a user in virtual reality setting. Since the stereo vision-based 3D input device is wireless, it provides users with a means for more natural and efficient interface, thus effectively realizing a feeling of immersion.
The Iho and Hamdeok beaches, the major coastal beaches in Jeju Island, have been studied through size analysis and using an experimental extension pole and sediment trap in beach profile, in order to understand their textural characteristics, migration patterns, and seasonal change in beach geometry. The Iho beach is composed of coarse and medium sands, 590 m in total length. The foreshore slope is 12.3$^{\circ}$ in summer and 10.8$^{\circ}$ in winter, which shows more steeper in summer. The Hamdeok beach consisting mostly of shell fragments is 950 m long, $5.7{\sim}7.4^{\circ}$ steep and 97.4${\sim}$114.5 m wide, respectively. The suspended load drift concentrations in the studied beaches showed 4.5 mg/l during the period of summer and 33.2 mg/l in winter, and those of fine-grained sediments are derived mostly from the marine of northeastward direction. The typical beach transformation of the Iho beach is resulting from the construction of jetties in the west side that built up the sand inside the jetties, whereas the erosion is occurring on the east side of beach. The center and berm sides of the sand in the Hamdeok beach drift into the dune side during the period of the stormy winter season.
The change of ribbon geometry, microstructure and shape recovery with Mn contents, wheel speed and various annealing temperature have been studied in Fe-X%Mn-5Cr-5Co-4Si (X%=15, 20, 24) shape memory alloy (SMA) ribbons rapidly solidfied by single roll chill-block melt-spinning process. The thickness and width of melt-spun ribbons are reduced, results in refining and uniformalizing grains with increasing wheel speed. In the ribbons melt-spun at a wheel speed of 15m/sec, both ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$martensites are formed in ribbon 1 (15.5wt%Mn), while only ${\varepsilon}$ martensite is revealed in ribbon 2 (20.2wt%Mn) and ribbon 3 (23.5wt%Mn). The volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite is decreased with increasing Mn contents, and those of ${\varepsilon}$ as well ${\alpha}^{\prime}$martensites are increased due to thermal stress relief and grain growth with increasing annealing temperature. Ms temperatures of the ribbons 1, 2 and 3 are fallen with increasing Mn contents. $M_s$ temperatures of the ribbons 1, 2 and 3 annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ for 3 min are risen abruptly, but are nearly constant even at higher annealing temperature, i.e., 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$ for 3 min. Shape recovery of the ribbons 1, 2 and 3 increased 30%, 52% and 69% with Mn contents, respectively. Shape recovery of ribbon 1 (15.5wt%Mn) formed ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$martensites decreased because of the presence of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$martensite but those of ribbon 2 (20.2wt%Mn) and ribbon 3 (23.5wt%Mn) formed ${\varepsilon}$ martensite increased with increasing annealing temperature.

In this paper, we propose a boundary input method for video surveillance systems. Since intrusion of a moving object is decided by comparition of its position and the surveillance boundary, the boundary input method is a basic function in video surveillance. Previous methods are difficult to adapt to the change of surveillance environments such as the size of surveillance area, the number of cameras, and the position of cameras because those build up the surveillance boundary using the captured image in the center of each camera. In our approach, the whole surveillance boundary is once defined in the form of polygon based on the satellite map and transformed into each camera environment. Its characteristics is that the boundary input is independent from the surveillance environment. Given the position of a moving object, the time complexity of its intrusion detection shows O(n), where n is the number of polygon vertices. To verify our method, we implemented a 3D simulation and assured that the input boundary can be reused in each camera without any redefinition.

It is important to develop new effective technologies to increase the interruption capacity and to reduce the size of a UB(Gas Circuit Breakers). Major design parameters such as nozzle geometries and interrupting chamber dimensions affect the cooling of the arc and the breaking performance. But it is not easy to test real GCB model in practice as in theory. Therefore, a simulation tool based on a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) algorithm has been developed to facilitate an optimization of the interrupter. Special attention has been paid to the supersonic flow phenomena between contacts and the observation of hat-gas flow for estimating the breaking performance. However, there are many difficult problems in calculating the flow characteristics in a GCB such as shock wave and complex geometries, which may be either static or in relative motion. Although a number of mesh generation techniques are now available, the generation of meshes around complicated, multi-component geometries like a GCB is still a tedious and difficult task for the computational fluid dynamics. This paper presents the CFD program using CFB-CAD integration technique based on Cartesian cut-cell method, which could reduce researcher's efforts to generate the mesh and achieve the accurate representation of the geometry designed by a CAD tools.
This paper presents a method for a hybrid (color and depth) camera system construction using a photogrammetric technology. A TOF depth camera is efficient since it measures range information of objects in real-time. However, there are some problems of the TOF depth camera such as low resolution and noise due to surface conditions. Therefore, it is essential to not only correct depth noise and distortion but also construct the hybrid camera system providing a high resolution texture map for generating a 3D model using the depth camera. We estimated geometry of the hybrid camera using a traditional relative orientation algorithm and performed texture mapping using backward mapping based on a condition of collinearity. Other algorithm was compared to evaluate performance about the accuracy of a model and texture mapping. The result showed that the proposed method produced the higher model accuracy.
