  • This study presents an analytical method of solving the behaviors of arc plasma in a nozzle constricting transferred-type torch and purposes to obtain the basic data for the design of a plasma torch, which can be obtained from the temperature, pressure, velocities and voltage distributions. We have to solve some conservation equations simultaneously and need to know the exact thermal gas properties in order to obtain the correct behaviors of arc plasma. It is also necessary to give the relevant physical or geometric boundary conditions. For the simplicity of analysis, we assumed that (a) the plasma flow is laminar, (b)the local thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e. LTE, prevails over the entire arc column region. The electrode sheath effects were neglected and the nozzle area was excluded from the analysis by assuming that the current flow into the nozzle is zero. We solved the momentum transfer equation including the self-magnetic pinch effect, and obtained the temperature distribution from the energy conservation equation. From this temperature, we could get arc voltage distribution. (author). refs., figs., tabs.

  • The influence on a stability of thermal plasma has been investigated in an electrode structure of non-transferred plasma torch. The variations of dynamic characteristic of the arc voltage was analyzed and compared in terms of voltage character and nozzle types for both the step-shaped nozzles and magnetic-approved cylindrical nozzle. From the experimental results, an electrode gap, flow rate of arc gas, and currents are considered as major operational parameters. As conclusion, it was assured that a torch with step-shaped nozzles of magnetic-approved type produce the stable plasma jet.

  • High temperature arc plasma technologies are recently being developed in Europe, Japan and United States as one or the treatment schemes of municipal wastes, industrial wastes and vitrification of low level radioactive wastes. An experimental plasma melting furnace, a transferred type plasma torch and 100kW class power supply have been made. Operation of this system and some basic experimental results for solid wastes treatment are reported.

  • This paper discusses the characteristics about the ignition of D.C. main discharge is a plasma jet generator, manufactured for trial as non-transferred type, when the electrical energy appropriate to the ignition is supplied to the gap between the electrodes by using advance discharge of attenuating high frequency voltage generated by a high frequency oscillator with mercury spark gap. These characteristics are under the influences of (a) the length of mercury gap in high frequency oscillator and the quantity of hydrogen flow supplied to it, (b) the condenser capacity of the high frequency oscillator circuit, (c) the length of plasma jet torch in D.C. main discharge circuit and the quantity of argon flow supplied to it, (d) the circuit constants of D.C. main discharge circuit. The results for these characteristics, obtained by this research, are considered to be helpful to the designs for the ignition of a plasma jet as well as the welding arc stabilizer by high frequency discharge and the high frequency arc welder.

  • DC plasma torch which is a non-transferred type was constructed and silicon nitride powders were produced. Ar gas is used as a plasma gas and gas reactants with the carrier gas are introduced beneath the plasma ignition part. Two slits are attached and a reactive quenching gas is introduced through them. Using $SiCl_4 and NH_3$ as starting materials, silicon nitride powders were produced. As-produced powders were amorphous and crystalline silicon nitrides were obtained by heating at $1420^{\circ}C$ for two hours under nitrogen atmosphere. Silicon nitride phase was identified in the XRD patterns and IR spectrum, and the image of the powders before and after heating was observed from the TEM analysis.
