  • For western music there has been a volume of researches on music information analysis for automatic transcription or content-based music retrieval. But it is hard to find the similar research on Korean traditional music. In this paper we propose several algorithms to automatically analyze the structure of Korean traditional music 'Pansori'. The proposed algorithm automatically distinguishes between the 'sound' part and 'speech' part which are named 'sori' and 'aniri', respectively, using the ratio of phonetic and pause time intervals. For rhythm called 'jangdan' classification the algorithm makes the robust decision using the majority voting process based on template matching. Also an algorithm is suggested to detect the bar positions in the 'sori' part based on Kalman filter. Every proposed algorithm in the paper works so well enough for the sample music sources of 'Pansori' that the results may be used to automatically transcribe the 'Pansori'.

  • This paper presents an algorithm that can provide initial conditions for formation flying at the beginning of a region of interest to maximize scientific mission goals in the case of a tetrahedral satellite formation. The performance measure is to maximize the quality factor that affects scientific measurement performance. Several path constraints and periodicity conditions at the beginning of the region of interest are identified. The optimization problem is solved numerically using a direct transcription method. Our numerical results indicate that there exist an optimal configuration and states of a tetrahedral satellite formation. Furthermore, the initial states and algorithm presented here may be used for reconfiguration maneuvers and fuel balancing problems.

  • In this paper, we describe our LVCSR system for Korean broadcast news transcription. The main focus is to find the most proper morpheme-based lexical model for Korean broadcast news recognition to deal with the inflectional flexibilities in Korean. There are trade-offs between lexicon size and lexical coverage, and between the length of lexical unit and WER. In our system, we analyzed the training corpus to obtain a small 24k-morpheme-based lexicon with 98.8% coverage. Then, the lexicon is optimized by combining morphemes using statistics of training corpus under monosyllable constraint or maximum length constraint. In experiments, our system reduced the number of monosyllable morphemes from 52% to 29% of the lexicon and obtained 13.24% WER for anchor and 24.97% for reporter.

  • In this paper, we have proposed Auto-TUS, an automatic transcription module of three union symbols-hyphen, dash and tilde (‘’, ‘―’, ‘∼’)-using their linguistic contexts. Few previous studies have discussed the problems of ambiguities in transcribing symbols into Korean alphabetic letters. We have classified six different reading formulae of the union symbols, analyzed the left and right contexts of the symbols, and investigated selection rules and distributions between the symbols and their contexts. Based on these linguistic features, 86 stereotyped patterns, 78 rules and 8 heuristics determining the types of reading formulae are suggested for Auto-TUS. This module works modularly in three steps. The pilot test was conducted with three test suites, which contains respectively 418, 987 and 1,014 clusters of words containing a union symbol. Encouraging results of 97.36%, 98.48%, 96.55% accuracy were obtained for three test suites. Our next phases are to develop a guessing routine for unknown contexts of the union symbols by using statistical information; to refine the proper nouns and terminology detecting module; and to apply Auto-TUS on a larger scale.

  • Located on the upstream of a gene, the promoter region that plays a very important role in the control of gene expression as a signal part has various binding sites for transcription factors. These binding sites are present in various parts of the promoter region and assume an aspect of highly conserved consensus sequence pattern. This paper deals with the introductions of search methods for consensus pattern, including Wataru method, EM algorithm, MEME algorithm, Genetic algorithm and Phylogenetic Footprinting method, and intends to give future prospects of research on this field.

  • In this paper, a mold temperature control method for injection molding is proposed. The inner surface of mold is locally heated by jet impingement to improve pattern transcription. Heating by hot jet is completed while the mold is open. An experimental system that realizes the proposed idea has been built, which includes mold, nozzle assembly and heater. Actual injection molding process including the proposed heating procedure has been conducted to verify the validity of the method. The process has been done for several conditions with different jet temperatures and duration of heating. The results from different conditions are compared.

  • The computational discovery of transcription factor binding site is one of the important tools in the genetic and genomic analysis. Rough prediction of gene regulation network and finding possible co-regulated genes are typical applications of the technique. Countless motif-discovery algorithms have been proposed for the past years. However, there is no dominant algorithm yet. Each algorithm does not give enough accuracy without extensive information. In this paper, we explore the possibility of combining multiple algorithms for the one integrated result in order to improve the performance and the convenience of researchers. Moreover, we apply new high order information that is reorganized from the set of basis predictions to the final prediction.

  • The goal of quantitative linguistics is to show the quantitative behavior of linguistic units. There are several studies which examine the frequency of Korean phonemes, which are important in comprehending the internal function of the linguistic units. However, the frequency information, from the pure phonological level without any consideration of rhythmic group, cannot adequately represent linguistic phenomena. Therefore, to provide the effective information, the phonological transcription must be carried out on the level of rhythmic group. In this paper, we made the transcription to analyze Korean phonology. We were not satisfied with merely investigating the frequencies of the phonemes, but also examined whether the distribution of Korean phonemes show the binomial distribution within linguistic constraints.

  • Early studies of the molecular biology of Bacillus thuringeinsis suggested that genetic manipulation of this species could create combinations of genes more useful than those known to occur in natural isolates. Breakthroughs that made these manipulations possible include the cloning of many genes encoding endotoxins, the development of transformation vectors, and various PCR techniques. This paper reviews several genetic factors such as promoters, a 5'mRNA stabilizing sequence, 3'transcription termination sequences, and helper proteins that have been used to enhance crystal protein synthesis, and shows how these genetic elements can be manipulated with new molecular tools to develop more efficacious strains of B. thuringiensis.

  • Fertilized egg, by successive cell divisions, differentiates into different tissues and organs with various structures and functions. Different cells and tissues contain different proteins, products of selective gene expression. Not all the genes in any genomes are equally active, temporal and spatial gene expression being the general rule. Present paper attempts to review the tanscriptional mechanisms or the initiations of transcription from several angles. In some of the organisms the genes in the process of transcription or the genes in the inactive state can be seen under the light microscope. Some bands of Drosophila polytene chromosomes may exhibit a swollen or puff appearance under certain conditions. A puff, unfolded or decondensed form of chromomere, represents sets of intense transcriptional activity or RNA synthesis. The heterochromatic X chromosome whose genes remain inactive in the female mammals can be visualized as a dark staining structure called Barr body, Configuration of chromatin differs between transcribed and nontranscribed chromatin. Modification to the chromatin facilitates RNA synthesis. The movement of large polymerase molecule along the DNA would probably be facilitated if some modifications of the chromatin configuration is effected. Methylation of cytosines in CG sequences is associated with inactive genes. Methylation can play a role in determination of mammalian cells during embryogenesis. Demethylation is necessary for the gene to be expressed during development A histone modification that is also known to be correlated with transcriptional capacity of chromatin is acetylation of the lysine residues of the core histones. Chromatin containing a high level of histone acetylation is very sensitive to DNase 1. For the transcription to occur TBP must first bind to the TATA box. Another TF, TF IIB, then binds to the promoter-TBP complex, facilitating the access of RNA polymerase to the transcription initiation site. As recently as eight years ago researchers assumed that histones were irrelevant to the regulation of gene expression. Histones combine with the DNA to form nucleosome of the chromatin. Histones are vital participant in gene regulation. Histone and basal factors compete for access to TATA box. When DNA is exposed to basal factors before histones are introduced, the basal factors assemble on TATA boxes preventing the access of histones, allowing transcription to occur, for transcription to begin, activator protein at the upstream activation sequence or enhancer must interact with the tail of histone H4 at TATA box and cause the histone role particle to dissociate from the TATA box leading to partial breakup of the histone core particle and allowing the basal factors to bind to the TATA box. New concept of genomic flux in contrast to the old concept of static genome has been developed based on the powerful new molecular techniques. Genomic changes such as repetitive DNAs and transposable elements, it is assumed but not yet proved, may affect some of the developmental patterns that characterize particular cells, tissues, organs, and organisms. In the last decade or so remarkable achievement have been made in the researches of the structures and functions of TFs and the specific target sequences located in promoters or enhancers where these TFs bind. TFs have independent domains that bind DNA and that activate transcription. DNA binding domain of TFs serves to bring the protein into the right location. There are many types of DNA binding domains. Common types of motifs can be found that are responsible for binding to DNA. The motifs are usually quite short and comprise only a small part of the protein structure. Steroid receptors have domains for hormone binding, DNA binding, and activating transcription. The zinc finger motif comprises a DNA binding domain. Leucine zipper consist of a stretch of amino acids with a leucine residue in every seventh position Two proteins form a dimer because they interact by means of leucine zippers on similar α-helical domain. This positions their DNA binding basic domains for interaction with the two halves of a DNA sequence with dyad symmetry of TGACTCA, ACTGAGT.
