Sppur gear trains are used widely in high precision machines because gear trains have an advantage of exact transmission of angular velocity. Especially, gear trains are used in high quali8ty photocopying and photography OA machines. In general, gears have errors in manufacturing and assembling process and the errors are limited by tolerances. As the result, the tolerances cause the performance error. Therfore, it is important to predict transmission error caused by the tolerances for the tolerance design. Earlier tolerance design methods use mainly experimental and geometrical techniques. In this paper, a method for gear train analysis with tolerance is proposed. Because the method uses dynamic contacts, it is possible to consider irregularities and assemble errors of gears. In addition, the method can predit dynamic loads on the teeth of gears.
Since the turnout system in railroad restricts the train speed, the KNR (Korean National Railroad) provides the specification for the speed (130km/h) of the train when the train passes the turnout system. Therefore, the turnout system in pre-existing railroad is necessary to be improved to speed-up for the train. In this study, the dynamic wheel-load field tests have been performed to evaluate the track performance and the roadbed bearing capacity has been examined using numerical analysis at the turnout crossing in the conventional and improved turnout system. The impact factor is estimated using the data sets achieved from the dynamic wheel-load field tests in the conventional and improved turnout system. The stress acting on the roadbed for the improved turnout system is substantially decreased compare to that for the conventional turnout system.

Through this study, the standard design guidelines for high speed train with power cars have been derived to meet the crashworthiness requirements of the Korean rollingstock safety regulation. The crashworthiness regulation requires some performance requirements for two heavy collision accident scenarios; a train-to-train collision at the relative speed of 36 kph, and a collision against a standard deformable obstacle of 15 ton at 110 kph. A standard high speed train composition was defined as 2PC-2ET-6T with 17ton axle load, similar to KTX-2 for the Honam express line. Using theoretical and numerical analyses, some crashworthy design guidelines were derived in terms of mean crush forces and energy absorptions for major crushable components. The derived design guidelines were evaluated and improved using one dimensional spring-mass dynamic simulation. It is shown from the simulation results that the suggested design guidelines can easily satisfy the domestic crashworthiness requirements.
Ultra-speed tube train, which runs in vacuum atmosphere to overcome aero-dynamic dragging force, is considered as a high-speed ground transportation system to back up long-distance air travel. To realize the ultra-speed tube train, feasibility study of currently available Maglev technologies especially for propulsion and levitation system is needed. Propulsion by linear synchronous motor(LSM) and levitation by electro-dynamic suspension(EDS) which are utilized in the Japan's MLX system could be one of candidated technologies for ultra-speed tube train. In the LSM-EDS system, the key component is superconducting magnet, and its reliability and performance is very important to guarantee the safe-operation of Maglev. As the initiative of the feasibility study, this paper deals with the basic structure of superconducting magnet and core technologies to design and operate it. And by surveying the current R&D achievement in Korea, the nation's capability to develop advanced superconducting magnet for Maglev is presented.
High-speed rail (HSR) has been in operation and development in many countries worldwide. The explosive growth of HSR has posed great challenges for operation safety and ride comfort. Among various technological demands on high-speed trains, vibration is an inevitable problem caused by rail/wheel imperfections, vehicle dynamics, and aerodynamic instability. Ride comfort is a key factor in evaluating the operational performance of high-speed trains. In this study, online monitoring data have been acquired from an in-service high-speed train for condition assessment. The measured dynamic response signals at the floor level of a train cabin are processed by the Sperling operator, in which the ride comfort index sequence is used to identify the train's operation condition. In addition, a novel technique that incorporates salient features of Bayesian inference and time series analysis is proposed for outlier detection and change detection. The Bayesian forecasting approach enables the prediction of conditional probabilities. By integrating the Bayesian forecasting approach with time series analysis, one-step forecasting probability density functions (PDFs) can be obtained before proceeding to the next observation. The change detection is conducted by comparing the current model and the alternative model (whose mean value is shifted by a prescribed offset) to determine which one can well fit the actual observation. When the comparison results indicate that the alternative model performs better, then a potential change is detected. If the current observation is a potential outlier or change, Bayes factor and cumulative Bayes factor are derived for further identification. A significant change, if identified, implies that there is a great alteration in the train operation performance due to defects. In this study, two illustrative cases are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method for condition assessment of high-speed trains.
Korean High Speed Train (KHST) designed to operate at 350km/h has been tested on high speed line in JungBu site since it was developed in 2002. The dynamic performances of railway vehicle are generally stability, safety and ride comfort. The stability performance of KHST was proved that it is stable at 400Km/h through Roller Rig test. The safety and ride comfort need to be predicted the capability of it at 350km/h by the on-line test because KHST is testing at 300km/h up to now. Therefor, in this paper, the safety and ride comfort at 350km/h are predicted the performance using the acceleration results at 300kw/h and these results show that the KHST's dynamic performances are very good. Also, it illustrate the two cases occurred the abnormal vibration of KHST during some on-line tests. The first case is that the variation of vertical acceleration of wheel is analyzed when an abrasion occur on wheel. The second case is that the lateral acceleration of wheel, bogie and body are analyzed when the KHST is unstable at high speed. The occurrences of these special phenomena were due to the some faults of the suspension and braking systems and the faults were improved. In present, it is testing with safety.
In this paper, sensitivity analysis of the pantograph for the high-speed Train was conducted using finite element analysis method. Dynamic interaction of catenary-pantograph model was simulated by using a commercial finite element analysis software, SAMCEF. Pantograph was assumed to be three degree of freedom mass-spring-damper model and the pre-sag of the contact and messenger wire was implemented due to gravity. The span data of the actual high-speed line and specification of pantograph for high-speed train was applied in the analysis model, respectively. The reliability of the simulation model is verified by comparing the contact force results of simulation and test. Through the simulation, mean contact force and its deviation was evaluated and then sensitivity of the pantograph was analyzed.
In this paper, we introduce the on-line test of the current collection characteristics for HSR 350x(Korea High Speed Train project) that have been performed in the Kyoung-bu high-speed line since 2002. Through the analysis of measured data during on-line test, the variation trends of contact force between pantograph and catenary according to the track conditions and driving patterns are reviewed. This study shows that the track conditions do not affect on the dynamic performance between pantograph and the driving patterns are important factors in determining the good interaction of them.
This paper presents the series multiple tuned mass dampers (STMDs) to suppress the resonant vibrations of railway bridges under the passage of high-speed trains (HSTs). A STMD device consisting of two spring-mass-damper units connected each other in series is installed on the bridge. In solution, bridge is modeled as a simply-supported Euler-Bernoulli beam with constant cross-section, and vehicle is simulated as a series of moving forces with constant speed. By the assumed mode method, the governing equations of motion of the beam-TMD device coupled system traversed by a moving train are obtained. The optimum values for the parameters of the STMD device are obtained for the criterion based on the minimization of the maximum dynamic displacement of the beam at its midspan. Single TMD and multiple TMDs in parallel are also considered for demonstration of the STMD device's performance. The results show that STMDs are effective in bridge vibration suppression and robust to parameters' change in the main system and the absorber itself.
Through this study, standard design guidelines for the high speed EMU have been derived to meet the crashworthiness requirements of the Korean rollingstock safety regulation. The crashworthiness regulation requires some performance requirements for two heavy collision accident scenarios; a train-to-train collision at the relative speed of 36 kph, and a collision against a standard deformable obstacle of 15 ton at 110 kph. The complete train set will be composed of 2TC-6M with 13 ton axle load, different from KTX with the power car of 17 ton axle load. Using theoretical and numerical analyses, some crashworthy design guidelines were derived in terms of mean crush forces and energy absorptions for main crushable structures and devices. The derived design guidelines were evaluated and improved using one dimensional spring-mass dynamic simulations. It is shown from the simulation results that the suggested design guidelines can easily satisfy the domestic crashworthiness requirements.
