  • To provide real-time traffic conditions, crowd sourcing based traffic information services in which users directly report and share traffic conditions are being developed. However, the existing traffic information service provides limited traffic conditions because it only shares information reported by specific service participants. In this paper, we design and develop a crowd sourcing based traffic information service that provides real-time traffic conditions by collecting direct reports from users and public traffic conditions. The proposed service allows users to directly report traffic conditions by voice and text, and collects and integrates traffic conditions published by external organizations. The collected traffic conditions are provided in real time through a push service, and new traffic conditions are transmitted when the user's location changes. The proposed service can report traffic conditions and share real-time traffic conditions through an Android app.

  • In order to reduce traffic accidents, many researchers studied a traffic accident model. The Cause of traffic accidents is usually the mis calculation of traffic signals or bad traffic intersection design. Therefore, to analyse the cause of traffic accidents, it takes effort. This paper, it calculates the optimal safe car speed considering intersection conditions and weather conditions. It will recommend calculation of 1/3 in vehicle speed when there are rainy days and snow days. But the problem is that it will always display the same speed limit when whether conditions change. In order to solve these problems, in this paper, it is proposed the calculation of optimal safety speed algorithm uses weather conditions and road conditions. Computer simulations is prove that it computes the traffic speed limit correctly, which proposed considering intelligent traffic accident prediction algorithms.

  • Traffic signal cycle optimization is one of the most efficient ways for reducing fuel consumption and improving vehicle waiting time of highsaturated traffic conditions. But most research focused on lowsaturated traffic conditions. Only a few studies have researched traffic control for highsaturated traffic conditions. In this paper reviews the problem of conventional traffic signal system and creates optimal traffic cycle of at the bottom traffic intersection using 27 fuzzy rules. Moreover, to prevent spillback, it can adapt control even though upper traffic intersection has a different saturation rate, road length, road slope and road width.

  • An important factor that causes delays at roundabouts is unbalanced traffic conditions. The majority of domestic studies have tendedto focus on the proportion of entering traffic rather than conflicting traffic in order to explain unbalanced traffic conditions. Also, there is scant research on the proper distance between a signalized intersection and a roundabout. In this study, therefore, unbalanced traffic conditions and optimal distance between two intersections were analyzed using SIDRA software based on the Gajwa-ro roundabout in Icheon, where unbalanced traffic conditions occur during afternoon peak hours, and its position is 295 m from a signalized intersection. It was found that a state of unbalanced traffic conditions in the form of conflicting traffic caused delays at Gajwa-ro roundabout, and the queuing length on each approach was removed when there was 850 m of distance between two intersections.

  • PURPOSES: This study analyzes the characteristics of traffic flow on freeway sections under daytime and nighttime conditions to improve traffic safety, and suggests a method to estimate an accurate freeway capacity value that reflects these characteristics. METHODS : The trends and differences in capacity were investigated using comprehensive field data collected under both daytime and nighttime conditions on freeway sections with designated speeds of 80, 100, and 120 kph. RESULTS : The capacity values under nighttime driving conditions were reduced by 3.3%, 6.9%, and 8.8% at 80, 100, and 120 kph, respectively. Several nighttime adjustment factors were deduced for each designated speed category from the analysis results. CONCLUSIONS : It is expected that more accurate capacity values can be estimated for freeway sections under nighttime conditions by applying the resulting adjustment factors. In addition, traffic safety will be improved through the increased efficiency of traffic management on these freeway sections.

  • Due to increasing interest in dispersion of traffic flows through providing traffic information, there has been much research of driver behavior and effectiveness of diversion. In this paper the authors intend to analyze how a diversion was determined and its effects through correlation analysis between diversion rates estimated by actual surveys and the traffic conditions. Through speed-flow analysis, the diversion mechanism was found. When travel speed decreased, detour volume increased. Then when the traffic volume was decreased through an increase of diversion and traffic conditions got better, the detour volume decreased again. In addition, the authors found negative correlation between the diversion rate and travel speed through correlation analysis. It shows that there were various relationships between diversion rates and traffic conditions according to congestion level and direction of traffic. Finally, it is suggested that the regression equation for calculating the diversion rate with the traffic flows, travel speed, and travel time as variables has a coefficient of determination of 38.5%. It means that traffic conditions on expressways take about 40% of driver's decision-making for diversion.

  • It is well known that weather conditions are closely related with the number and severity of traffic accidents. At present, installation of safety countermeasures including systems is common approach to reduce the damage of traffic accidents at expressways. In this study, the differences of causation factors to influence traffic accidents considering road alignment characteristics and weather conditions. In order to identify the relationship between road and weather conditions, discriminant analysis has been performed with 500 traffic accident data at expressways. Weather conditions are divided into several categories such as snow, sunny, rain, fog, and cloud. Also, road conditions such as types of pavements, grades are analyzed. As the results, major impacting road conditions to traffic accidents are concrete pavement and 3% or more down grades. In these road conditions, visible distance will be reduced and actual braking distances will be increased. This study shows that the expressway sections under concrete pavement and down grades should be more cautious than other sections. It also shows that fog condition is the mose dangerous situation in terms of traffic accidents.

  • This study focused on estimating influential factors of traffic accidents and analyzing traffic accident severity of elderly and non elderly using traffic accident data. In order to reclassify elderly and non elderly traffic accident by a statistical method from entire traffic accident data, multiple discriminant analysis was applied. Also ordered logit model was applied for analyzing traffic accident severities using traffic accident severities as an independent variable and transportation facilities, road conditions and human characteristics as dependent variables. As results of the comparison between elderly and non elderly traffic accident, the traffic accident severity was affected by the age, types of traffic accidents, human characteristics and road conditions as well. Also, transportation facilities and road conditions affected to more elderly traffic accident than non elderly. Therefore, traffic accident severity would be decreased with the improvement of transportation facilities and road conditions for the elderly.

  • Traffic accidents are caused by a variety of factors. Among the factors that cause traffic accidents are weather conditions at the time. There is a difference in the percentage of deaths according to traffic accidents, due to the weather conditions. In order to reduce the number of deaths due to traffic accidents, to predict the incidence of traffic accidents that occur in response to weather conditions is required. In this paper, it propose a model to predict the incidence of traffic accidents caused by weather conditions. Predictive modeling was applied to the theory of Markov processes. By applying the actual data for the proposed model, to predict the incidence of traffic accidents, it was compared with the number of occurrences in practice. In this paper, it is to support the development of traffic accident policy with the change of weather.

  • Although an interest in higher design speeds continues to increase to promote more efficient travel on expressways, the current Korean design guidelines do not provide criteria for design values. An arising issue associated with higher design speeds is how to effectively ensure traffic safety under such high speed traffic conditions. In particular the safety issue would become more significant in determining the interchange spacing. This study proposes a methodology for determining freeway interchange spacing under higher speed traffic conditions. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used to evaluate the effects of various interchange spacings on traffic conditions in terms of safety. In this study, the acceleration noise was used as an index to represent the stability of traffic conditions, which is a potential indicator to quantify the level of safety. It was found based on simulation evaluations that 5-km interchange spacing would be a feasible alternative under higher speed traffic conditions (around 160 km/h).
