The behavioral mechanism underlying the traffic assignment model is a choice, or decision-making process of traveling paths between origins and destinations. The deterministic approach to traffic assignment assumes that travelers choose shortest path from their origin-destination pair. Although this assumption seems reasonable, it presumes that all travelers have perfect information regarding travel time, that they make consistently correct decision, and that they all behave in identical fashion. Stochastic user equilibrium assignment relaxes these presumptions by including a random component in traveler's perception of travel time. The objective of this study is to compare "A Model of Deterministic User Equilibrium Assignment" with "Models of Stochastic User Equilibrium Assignment" in the theoretical and practical aspects. Specifically, SUE models are developed to logit and probit based models according to discrete choice functions. The models were applied to sioux Falls net ork consisting of 24 zones, 24 nodes and 76 links. The distribution of perceived travel time was obtained by using the relationship between speed and traffic flow.
A network model and a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to solve the simultaneous estimation of the trip distribution and traffic assignment from traffic counts in the congested networks in a logit-based Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE). The model is formulated as a problem of minimizing a non-linear objective function with the linear constraints. In the model, the flow-conservation constraints are utilized to restrict the solution space and to force the link flows become consistent to the traffic counts. The objective of the model is to minimize the discrepancies between two sets of link flows. One is the set of link flows satisfying the constraints of flow-conservation, trip production from origin, trip attraction to destination and traffic counts at observed links. The other is the set of link flows those are estimated through the trip distribution and traffic assignment using the path flow estimator in the logit-based SUE. In the proposed GA, a chromosome is defined as a real vector representing a set of Origin-Destination Matrix (ODM), link flows and route-choice dispersion coefficient. Each chromosome is evaluated by the corresponding discrepancies. The population of the chromosome is evolved by the concurrent simplex crossover and random mutation. To maintain the feasibility of solutions, a bounded vector shipment technique is used during the crossover and mutation.
Conventional traffic assignment techniques usually do not consider traveler's route choice behavior affected by hierachicla strucfture in urban highway system. This study realizes the route choice behavior such that travelers tend to choose more higher level of highway rather than lower level of highway for longer trops. Otherwise, for shorter trips, travelers tend to choose lower level of highway unless they can get sufficient travel time saving by using mojor arterial street or freeway (higher level of highway). Therefore, this study suggests a traffic assignment technique incorrporating route choice behavior related to hierachical highway structure by introducing some perception costs to generalized cost function such as perceptional preference measureemnt for higher level higheay and perceptional penalty when changing to different level of highway. Through simulation analysis, it is shown that the simulation results with the new traffic assignment echnique can be different a lot from the results with the convential method.
In this paper, we propose a framework to study how to route packets efficiently in multipath communication networks. Two traffic congestion control techniques, namely, flow assignment and packet scheduling, have been investigated. The flow assignment mechanism defines an optimal splitting of data traffic on multiple disjoint paths. The resequencing delay and the usage of the resequencing buffer can be reduced significantly by properly scheduling the sending order of all packets, say, according to their expected arrival times at the destination. To illustrate our model, and without loss of generality, Gaussian distributed end-to-end path delays are used. Our analytical results show that the techniques are very effective in reducing the average end-to-end path delay, the average packet resequencing delay, and the average resequencing buffer occupancy for various path configurations. These promising results can form a basis for designing future adaptive multipath protocols.
Traffic signal setting policies and traffic assignment procedures are mutually dependent. The combined signal control and traffic assignment problem deals with this interaction. With the total travel time minimization objective, gradient based local search methods are implemented. Deterministic user equilibrium is the selected user route choice rule, Webster's delay curve is the link performance function, and green time per cycle ratios are decision variables. Three implemented solution codes resulting in six variations include intersections operating under multiphase operation with overlapping traffic movements. For reference, the iterative approach is also coded and all codes are tested in four example networks at five demand levels. The results show the numerical gradient estimation procedure performs best although the simplified local searches show reducing the large network computational burden. Demand level as well as network size affects the relative performance of the local and iterative approaches. As demand level becomes higher, (1) in the small network, the local search tends to outperform the iterative search and (2) in the large network, vice versa.
In this paper, we address the question of dynamic network provisioning for time-varying traffic rates, with the objective of maximizing the system throughput. We assume that the network is capable of providing bandwidth guaranteed traffic tunnels for an ingress-egress pair and present an approach that (1) updates the tunnel routes and (2) adjusts the tunnel bandwidths, in an incremental, adaptive manner, based on the variations in the incoming traffic. First, we consider a simpler scenario where tunnel routes are fixed, and present an approach for adjusting the tunnel bandwidths dynamically. We show, through simulations, that our dynamic bandwidth assignment algorithm significantly outperforms the optimal static bandwidth provisioning policy, and yields a performance close to that of the optimal dynamic bandwidth provisioning policy. We also propose an adaptive route update algorithm, which can be used in conjunction with our dynamic bandwidth assignment policy, and leads to further improvement in the overall system performance.

In this paper, we present the channel assignment and management methods for an efficient use of traffic channel resource for supporting 12.2 Kbps, 64 Kbps, and 384 Kbps traffic with the different quality of service (QoS) in the radio network controller (RNC) in asynchronous IMT-2000 system. We first describe two types of traffic channel block assignments for utilizing the traffic channel efficiently; the partially dedicated and partially shared channel (PDPSC) assignment and the completely shared channel (CSC) assignment. The former is that some traffic channel block is completely assigned to each traffic type and the other blocks are shared with some traffic type. The latter is that all traffic channel blocks are completely shared with all traffic types. Further, for efficiently assigning, releasing, and managing the channel resource, we present the traffic channel management method which consists of the block and task management step. Through numerical examples, we evaluate the blocking probability and the mean number of required search for fading the available channel when applying our proposed channel block assignment and resource management methods.
The purpose of this study is to construct a dynamic traffic analysis model using the existing traffic flow theory in order to develope a dynamic traffic assignment technique. In this study the dynamic traffic analysis model was constructed using Daganzo's CELL TRANSMISSION THEORY which was considered more suitable to dynamic traffic assignment than the other traffic flow theories. We developed newly the diverging split module, the cost update module and the link cost function and defined the maximum waiting time decision function that Daganzo haven't defined certainly at his Papers. The output that resulted from the simulation of the dynamic traffic analysis model with test network I and II was shown at some tables and figures, and the analysis of the bottleneck and the HOV lane theory showed realistic outputs. Especially, the result of traffic assignment using the model doesn't show equilibrium status every time slice but showed that the average travel cost of every path maintains similarly in every time slice. It is considered that this model can be used at the highway operation and the analysis of traffic characteristics at a diverging section and the analysis of the HOV lane effect.
The traffic forecast is one of the most important analysis objects in the urban transportation planning process. The results of traffic forecast are the most widely used informations and give a critical influence on the major decision makings in the transportation planning process. Thus, they should be as much accurate and credible data, and evaluated to determine whether they are enough reliable to directly use in the planning process. However, the evaluation process is usually overlooked or abbreviated with a few exceptions according to the size and character of the project. Even though a planner or engineer tries to evaluate the assignment results, he/she is usually faced with certain difficulties since there are no established criteria and methods for the accuracy evaluation. Accordingly, the main purpose of this research placed on establishing the criteria and methods for the accuracy evaluation of the assignment results. The secondary purpose was to evaluate which assignment technique produces the most accurate assignment results by applying the established evaluation criteria and methods to an actual network. The research found that the proposed evaluation methods well operated in testing the accuracy of assignment results with few limits on application. Also, the incremental assignment was found to provide the best assignment results of existing assignment techniques (Stochastic, Iterative, Incremental, Equilibrium assignment) for the Seoul city network applied.

In this paper, we propose a new channel assignment scheme considering traffic characteristics in the CDMA cellular system. The object of proposed method is to reduce the hard handoff of data calls which are very sensitive to transmission errors. In this algorithm, we use three channel assignment policies. First, all of the data calls are assigned to the primary CDMA channel if possible. Second, priority for primary CDMA channel is given to data calls by assigning some primary CDMA traffic channels exclusively for data calls. Third, data calls are assigned to the CDMA channel most served by neighbor cells, when all of the primary CDMA traffic channels are used. A performance analysis shows the minimum soft handoff probability of data calls in handoff which is guarantied any cellconfiguration is increased above 40% by the adopting proposed algorithm.
