  • Just as traditional markets nationwide, traditional markets in Jeju area also face a crisis due to expansion of new distribution channel and price competitiveness of large distribution companies. There are various support programs currently being carried out to prevent all risk factors of the traditional markets as government policies. But, these programs have failed to bring a positive change due to lack of specialized products of the traditional market, lack of systematic marketing and customer management, lack of market vendors' consciousness reformation. The purpose of this study is to prepare political measures to promote the revitalization of traditional markets in Jeju area and overcome these limits. To achieve this, this study analyzed the conditions of traditional markets in Jeju area and presented the specialization of items and service for each traditional market, establishment of growth strategies in connection with tourist industry and reinforcement of marketing competitiveness as measures to create a synergy effect.

  • Since the use of textile has become more extensive and applied for various products, today, the importance of utility, ornament and civilization of textile is emphasized. Textile design should be able to satisfy the designer's creativity and his/her world of art. Moreover, it should be appropriate for the industrial technology circumstances, and taste of consumers. In Korea, traditional culture has been extremely valued, allowing people to be more interested in textile designs derived from traditional cultural. Therefore, designs inspired by the spirit and sense of traditional patterns has been used to develop modern textile designs. Prior research on products, however, show that cultural motive was insufficient, therefore, in this research the purpose is to design textiles and to develop Korean neckties, an essential component of men's attire, by adapting Korean traditional patterns. In order to conduct the research, first, numerous parers on Korean traditional patterns have been studied to select fundamental data about the development of necktie textile designs. Second, Korean traditional patterns were applied while following the target and concept, and two pieces of necktie textile designs have been suggested. Patterns had been designed by hand drawing and CAD system, they have been suggested as a portfolio. As a result, this article suggests new necktie designs utilizing Korean traditional patterns and, attempts to develop particular pattern designs, which have power to accommodate globalization and to express the special qualities of Korea.

Screening of Korean Herbal Medicines with Inhibitory Activity on Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) Formation (III) (한국약용식물의 최종당화산물 생성저해활성 검색 (III))

  • Enhanced formation and accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been implicated as a major pathogenesis process leading to diabetic complications, normal aging, atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. In our ongoing project to discover novel treatments for diabetic complications from natural sources, we have investigated on the inhibitory activity of 67 ethanol extracts from 57 Korean herbal medicines against the formation of AGEs in vitro. Of these, 22 extracts were found to have a significant AGEs inhibitory activity ($IC_{50}$<50 ${\mu}g$/ml) compared with aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}$=75.98 ${\mu}g$/ml). Particularly, 6 extracts from 3 herbal medicines, Castanea crenata (flower, leaf, bark-twig), Acer tatarium subsp. ginnala (fruit) and Sapium japonicum (leaf, twig) showed (approximately 8-17 fold) stronger inhibitory activity than that of aminoguanidine.

  • This study is to investigate the cognition and usage of traditional wedding food in Seoul & Gyeonggi area. It provides the basic suggestions for developing the best wedding culture, upholding the great wedding tradition. People usually prepared traditional wedding food only because they had to do since they thought it was a formal way to do it at a wedding ceremony. However, there should be more important things to be considered. Firstly, to understand the real meaning of traditional wedding food, we need to inform its meaning by starting campaigns on wedding culture or making booklets of traditional wedding food. Secondly, to prepare the right selections of traditional food, we need to simplify traditional wedding food and consider the modern sense of the products. Thirdly, to improve traditional wedding food, we need to develop diverse menu. By doing it, we can efficiently reduce the cost of wedding food.

  • Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been postulated to play a central role in the development of diabetic complications. A variety of different agents that inhibit AGEs have been under investigation. In this study, 66 herbal medicines from China have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation system using AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Of these, 31 herbal medicines ($IC_{50}$ < $50\;{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Particularly, 5 herbal medicines, Camptotheca acuminata (branches and leaves), Quercus franchetii (branches), Camellia pitardii (leaves, branches, and fruits), Antidesma bunius (whole plants), and Loranthus parasiticus (whole plants) showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 6-20 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}=52.96\;{\mu}g/ml$).

  • We manufactured natural dyed Korean traditional paper (Hanji) for cultural properties conservation and storage with goldthread (Coptis chinensis) and silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$). Goldthread and silver nitrate are known to be an excellent antimicrobial activity. The effect of content of goldthread and silver nitrate on properties of dyed Hanji was investigated. Color strength of dyed Hanji decreased with increasing content of silver nitrate. After-mordanting with 3% silver nitrate improved lightfastness of dyed Hanji. Tannic acid treatment increased K/S value of dyed Hanji. As the amount of the increase in goldthread content was reduced silver nitrate content. Sim-mordanting method was used for simplifying manufacture process. Silver nitrate sim-mordanting method increased K/S value of goldthread than after-mordanting method.

  • Traditional patterns of Korea vary greatly and have excellent value in terms of artistic merit. Nevertheless because there are not enough the research and development of them, traditional patterns of Korea are not yet recognized in internationally aesthetic value. Therefore the development of designs modernizing traditional patterns of Korea is urgently needed. In this study, I chose Four gracious plants as the subject materials of textile design development. Before everything I examined data of Four gracious plants expressed on Blue and white porcelain. And I chose data that are suitable to express modern image among them. I set my face to develop the textile design of Korean images by adding modern scenes with them. Also, I were trying to make fashion products like muffler and tie by using techniques such as burn out, crayon dying and spray dyeing.

  • Korean traditional fermented foods have been diversely developed to enhance taste and flavor while preserving them on a long term basis. For those furthur utilization and development, more efforts to commercialize these products focusing to the consumer's needs should be proceded. In that sence, the fermented foods might be classified into the bioproduct (biofood) and the sterilized. The former defines the non-sterilized such as Kimchi, Jeotkal (fermented fishes), and Jang (fermented soybean products) so as to include various kinds of microorganisms, enzymes and the unknown bioproducts, while the latter defines the sterilized such as soysauce and vinegars proper to the commercialization. In this paper, present R & D status has been reviewed laying stress on Kimchi, Jeotkal and Jang and the mixed fermentation system by the microflora was suggested as a Korean style model for the future R & D direction in these fields.

  • The importance of tourism was recognized through the olympiad of 1988. Especially visual impacts like uniform make it more important to develop proper service system. Thus, the object of this study is to provide a renewal uniform policy of Korean restaurant. Here, the theoretical knowledge is applied into actual conditions, and found many problems as a result. 1. There are no recognition of the importance of uniforms. 2. No effort has been made in creating image suitable for traditional restaurants. 3. There has been no uniqueness and utility. 4. The uniform colors have not been coordinated working environments. 5. There have been some problems concerning uniform managements. These problems led to an idea of making new uniforms, and actual products has been producted as a part of the study. The products have focused an functional utility and tradition of Korean costumes. I hope my endeavor will be helpful for traditional Korean restaurants and developing of uniform design.

Methods for Revitalization of a Region through Landscape Improvement Using Traditional Local Products

  • I have analyzed four methods for revitalizing the Ibi district, a local community in Minami Awaji City in Hyogo Prefecture, using Awaji tile, a traditional product. The first analysis is of a workshop to think about the revitalization of the community using Awaji tile. The second is an evaluation of using Awaji tile in the construction of green spaces and the renewal of existing buildings. The third analysis is on the distribution of terracotta for plants to all the residents of this district and the construction of art objects using Awaji tile at the seashore and by the entrance area of a highway interchange. The fourth analysis is of the results of information sharing by a newsletter and a website. Finally, I gave questionnaires to workshop participants. As a result, visible, completed products of these efforts were evaluated positively, but more effort is required related to the newsletter and website. Overall, I could verify the compounded possibilities for revitalization of the community using Awaji tile as promoting regional industry, activating the community, and improving the landscape.
