  • This study was to investigate the relationship between ultrasonographic examination and pattern identification classification on cinical studies in chinese medicine. We searched clinical studies related correlation between ultrasonographic examination and pattern identification classification in chinese medicine, that published from 2013 to 2016 in China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases by keywords, 'ultrasound(超?)', 'chinese medicine(中?)', 'syndrome differentiation (辨?)'. Seventeen studies were found. There were 7 studies of gynecological diseases including polycystic ovary syndrome and uterine myoma, 5 studies of fatty liver, 3 studies of arthritis, and 1 studie of thyroid nodule and lymphadenopathy respectively. As a result, ii is thought that there was a certain degree of correlation between the change of the ultrasonographic image and the pathological types according to traditional chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome differentiation and ultrasonographic examination could be used as secondary means for the TCM syndrome differentiation classification. In conclusion, by using ultrasonograph device in a medicinal way of TCM and traditional korean medicine (TKM), it is thought that more detailed and accurate diagnosis and treatment are possible and the evidence for reasonableness of syndrome differentiation in TCM and TKM its validity can be secured.

  • Recently, Despite improvements of therapeutic methods on malignancy, the need of modalities on the treatment of cancer have been increasing nowadays and Traditional Oriental Medicine have been considered as alternatives and the uses of it have continued to increase in cancer therapy. The aims of this paper is to gain the evidence of entering to the mainstream of cancer therapy and get the clue to make herbal prescription and perform the clinical trials using herbal medicines. Cheong-yeol group herbs which was intimate thought have been used most frequently and leukemia cell lines and apoptosis-releated experiments were executed mostly. A distinguished experiments were about the combination therapy on cancer and comparison between herbs and active compound derived from the same herb. With these results, we knew that molecular biology using herbs have been gained the popularity more and more and we think that we can use these results in the laboratory work and clinical work to strengthen the utilization of Traditional Oriental Medicine.

  • Psoriasis is a common inflammatory disease of the skin marked by excessive scaling associated with inflammation, affecting 1-2% of the population. Although their etiologies remain unknown, the finding of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes at sites of psoriasis has led many reports to hypothesize that psoriasis is a T lymphocyte-mediated disease directed against unknown autoantigens. The oriental medicine understands the cause of psoriasis as low humidity of skin tissues and functional deteriorations of the liver and lung. Gami-Yunbueum (GY) is a mixture of two previous prescription, which were used to the protection of liver and lung. We had prescribed the GY to the three psoriasis patients for 11 weeks and examined the effectiveness of the GY by PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) score. In our experiment, GY improved the symptoms of psoriasis in all cases. These results indicated that GY can apply to the treatment of psoriasis. Furthermore, the process for treatment of psoriasis is possible to provide humidity to skin and control the functions of liver and lung.

  • This study focuses on seeking a desirable direction for the discussions about identity issue of the current Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). The identity issue of the current TKM is about asking what exactly the current TKM is, what sets the TKM apart from the other medical systems, and what value the TKM has in the contemporary settings, and seeking suitable answers to all these questions. The most important factor that affects these answers is what kind of the concept of identity we have. Current discussions of the identity issue of the TKM take narrow and inflexible concepts of identity such as "Numerical Identity," or "Qualitative Identity", not suitable for TKM, which is always changing and open to other academic fields. This study suggests that Hannah Arendt's concept of identity is more desirable for the TKM, which highlights pluralism and relations, as well as defining identity as a creative, positive, and open-ended process. In addition, this study also suggests that taking a closer look at the "field", which has previously been hidden behind the discourse on the "modernization", will help in figuring out what exactly the identity of the current TKM is. Lastly, the current discussions about "unification of Eastern and Western medical system", and "Integrative Medicine" in Korea will affect the identity issue of TKM.

  • The education of traditional Korean medicine has been challenged for the lack of illustrated explanation of fundamental and pivotal concepts. The purpose of this study was to make suggestions for the diagrammatic concept on Qi. Thorough review was made performed to elucidate pictorial concept of Qi with medical classics and textbooks on the human physiology based on the central theories including Yin-Yang, five phase, and correspondence between nature and human. Medical terminology and its taxonomy for the Qi were examined here. We proposed more clarified terminology and related metabolic pathways for the design of schematic illustration of Qi. This study would contribute to the development of introductive drawings and educational materials fit for the apprentice.

  • Body constitution research in Korean traditional medicine adopt the diagnosis and treatment theory of "image-differentiation[body constitution differentiation, disease differentiation] in combination with syndrome differentiation diagnostic model and symptoms and signs of herbal property belong to image" as its core, which is key national medical science research project of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the project brought up 4 key scientific problem ? body constitution differentiation theory, correlation theory of body constitution and disease, body constitution adjustable theory and symptoms and signs of herbal property belong to image theory. In body constitution pathology, it brought up "correlation between body constitution and symptoms", "differentiation between body constitution and symptoms" which increase the diagnostic level and diagnostic accuracy rate. In the condition of pathology, it obviously has low reliability according to body constitution differentiation, sometimes happen the description not comply with body constitution and disease symptoms, which lead to decrease the clinic diagnostic and treatment level, treatment effect not satisfying too. Now taking 4 key scientific achievement as criterion to illustrate the body constitution and disease symptoms.

  • Recent advances in systems biology are shedding a new light on the traditional medicine research. The systems biology highlights the way each component interacts with each other within a system, and the network behavior that emerges from such interactions. This feature of systems biology can accent the systemic aspects of Korean medicine such as the mechanism of action of herbal formulae, pattern differentiation, and the meridian systems, as both the Korean medicine and the systems biology theorize the human physiological functions and phenomena from a holistic point of view. This paper outlines the meaning of the recent Korean medicine research using the systems biology methodology. We discuss the methodologies of the two fields in a comparative manner, and overview the advantages and limitations of the integrated approaches. Finally, we suggest the future prospects for the systems biology inspired approaches to the Korean medicine research. The systems biology may provide a new modernized research methodology for the Korean medicine that can highlight its unique features.

  • Internal deficiency of vital Qi is origination of cancer and root cause of its development from the viewpoint of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM). For about 40 years, China has developed a combined system of TCM and Western medical system in treatment of cancers, laying stress on the therapeutic principle of strengthening the body resistance and restoring normal functioning of the body to consolidate the constitution (Fu Zheng Pei Ben). According to the results of the latest clinical and experimental studies, Chinese medicine not only increases curative effectiveness, but also reduces the side effect caused by the toxic, radio and chemical treatment of cancer cases in the western medical system as well as various complications. Long-term taking Chinese herbal medicine prevents recurrence and metastasis of tumor, and heightens long-term curative effectiveness after western medical treatments. It also helps to relieve symptoms, improve the quality of life, and prolong life of terminal cancer patients who have already lost opportunities of western medical treatments. In addition, it can prevent and cure premonitory symptoms of cancer.
