  • Protaetia Brevitarsis Seulensis(white grub) has been traditionally used as medicinal stuff to treat blood stasis, occlusion of menstruation, tetanus and liver cancer in Asian countries (Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, India and Myanmar). Especially, Donguibogam, which is traditional korean medicinal book, described the white grub as traditional medicine to treat hepatic diseases and vascular disorders. The white grub has been considered as highly nutritional food. The major constituents of white grub are rich in protein, healthy fats, iron, calcium. Recent studies announced that white grub has hepatoprotective effect and anti-microbacterial effect. However, the immuno-enhancing effect of white grub extracts in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells has not been studied yet. In this study, the various concentrations of white grub extract were examined to find immuno-enhancing effects on RAW 264.7 cells. Cytotoxicity was determined by MTT assay and immuno-enhancing effect of white grub extract was investigated by measuring nitric oxide (NO) production compared with only lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment. White grub extracts (0.001 - 10 mg/ml) did not show cytotoxicity. Additionally, white grub extracts (0.001 - 1mg/ml) had Immuno-enhancing effect on RAW 264.7 cells compared with only LPS treated group. These results might be provided proof to develop beneficial immuno-enhancing material for human health.

  • Objectives : Recently there have been encouraging results, from a western perspective, in the cancer research field regarding the anticancer effects of herbal medicine. This paper was aimed to review herbal medicine playing its anticancer role in terms of apoptosis, inflammation control, differentiation and telomerase. Methods : New studies for tang, medicinal herb itself or effective ingradients of medicinal herb showing anti-cancer effectiveness were reviewed and summarized in terms of pharmacological action. Results : Ethanol extracts of $Spatholobus$ $suberectus$ greatly inhibited cancer cell growth inducing cell apoptosis and cytotoxic effects. $Scutellaria$ $baicalensis$ may be responsible for its anticancer activity showing inhibition of $PGE_2$ synthesis via suppression of COX-2 expression. Saikosaponins isolated from $Bupleurum$ induced the differentiation of C6 glioma cells, cancer cells, into astrocytes, normal cells. Acetone extract of $Bupleurum$ $scorzonerifolium$ inhibited proliferation of human lung cancer cells via inducing apoptosis and suppressing telomerase activity. Conclusions : Herbal medicine inhibited cancer cell growth inducing cell apoptosis and cytotoxic effects. Inflammation persisting for a decade eventually elevates the risk of cancer sufficiently that it is discernible in case control epidemiological studies. Differentiation therapy is defined as a therapy to treat cancers by inducing differentiation of the stem cells. Telomerase expression is a hallmark of cancer. Nearly the complete spectrum of human tumors has been shown to be telomerase positive.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the trend of traditional Chinese medicine for sudden sensorineural hearing Loss(SSHL) in Chinese journals. Methods : Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) and Wanfang med online were used to search randomized controlled trials(RCTs) on SSHL which were published from January, 2017 to December, 2021. Results : Among Chinese studies, Tonifying and Replenishing medicinal(補益藥) and Exterior-releasing medicinal(解表藥) were the most frequently used medicine in treating SSHL. Acori Graminei Rhizoma(石菖蒲) was the most frequently used herb excluding Glycyrrhizae Radix(甘草). All studies reported that using Traditional Chinese Medicine alone or combining western medicne(WM) is more effective for treating SSHL than using WM alone, although one study reported the result is not statistically significant. Conclusions : In analysis of selected studies, co-treatment of traditional chinese medicine and WM can be more effective way for treating SSHL than using WM alone. Side effects of treating SSHL can also be reduced by co-treatment of traditional chinese medicine and WM.

  • A5E is complex of several medicinal herb ethanol extracts. The aim of this study is investigating the anticancer effect for non-small cell lung cancer. The antitumor effects of A5E on NCI-H460 were examined by regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, mitochondrial membrane potential (${\Delta}{\Psi}_m$), and apoptosis-related protein. Cell proliferation was measured by MTS assay. Apoptosis induced by A5E was confirmed by Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)/Propidium Iodide (PI) staining, and cell cycle arrest was measured by PI staining. NF-${\kappa}B$ translocation was detected by immunofluorescence and MMP (${\Delta}{\Psi}_m$) was measured by JC-1 staining. The expression of extrinsic pathway molecules such as FasL and FADD were elevated, and procaspase-8 was processed by A5E. In addition, intrinsic pathway related molecules were altered. The Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl levels decreased, Bax increased, and cytochrome C was released. In addition, the mitochondrial membrane potential collapsed, and caspase-3 and poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerase were processed by A5E. Moreover, A5E affected the cellular survival pathway involving phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt and NF-${\kappa}B$. PI3K and Akt were downregulated, also NF-${\kappa}B$ expression was decreased, and nuclear translocalization was inhibited by A5E. These results suggested that A5E delays proliferation, inhibit cell cycle progression and induce apoptosis in human lung cancer cell. We conclude that A5E is a potential anticancer agent for human lung carcinoma.

  • Flavonoids are mainly contained in the vegetables and medicinal herbs. Until now, over 5,000 kinds of flavonoid have been identified and their biological activities have been reported. Among them, we are interested in oroxylin A and spinosin because of their specific structures having bulky group at C-6 of ring A. Oroxylin A is contained in the Scutellaria baicalensis and exhibits cognitive enhancing activity as a GABAA receptor antagonist, which is different from those of mainly contained in the S. baicalenis, baicalein or wogonin. Spinosin is isolated from Zizyphus jujuba var. spinosa and mainly studied as a hypnotic or anxiolytic agent because of traditional knowledge about its original herb. As far as we know, the cognitive function of spinosin was first identified by our group. In this review, we discuss how such flavonoids exert their pharmacological activities associated with cognitive function based on the receptor binding study and behavioral studies. Traditional knowledge and reverse pharmacology may be addressed in the research field of phytochemical pharmacology and useful to unveil the secret of phytochemicals.

  • Six Korean medicinal herbs, Codonopsis lanceolata Traut (sasam), Platycodon grandiflorium A. De Candolle (gilkyung), Paeonia lactiflora var. trichocarpa Bunge (peony), Angelica gigas Nakai (danggwi), Astragalus membranaceus Bunge (hwangki) and Cnidium officinale Makino (chunkung) were added in brewing Korean traditional rice wine. Fermentation characteristics such as contents of total acid, reducing sugar, total sugar, pH, temperature, and alcohol concentration were investigated every 24 hr during fermentation periods. Changes of fermentation characteristics were remarkable in the initial period $(1{\sim}4\;days)$, slow in the middle $(5{\sim}7\;days)$, and almost unchangeable in the final $(8{\sim}10\;days)$. Total acid content was remarkably increased during the initial period but slowly afterwards. Reducing sugar content, total sugar content, and pH were remarkably decreased during the initial period but slowly afterwards. Alcohol concentrations of medicinal herb rice wines were $0.3{\sim}1.5%$ lower than the traditional wine throughout the fermentation periods. After the final period of 10 days of fermentation, alcohol concentration was observed as 12.6% in wine from sasam, 12.9% from gilkyung, 12.3% from peony, 12.4% from danggwi, 13.4% from hwangki, 12.6% in wine from chunkung, 13.6% in raditional wine respectively. Those differences were expected as the results of differences in various herbs. From the sensory evaluation, the highest score of overall quality was observed in the wine from hwangki, the next from chunkung, sasam, the traditewional wine, gilkyung, danggwi and the last from peony.
