  • Purpose: This research, based on the tariff reduction table negotiated by South Korea and China free trade area, the specific tariffs of the two countries in the implementation of the Korea-China Free Trade Agreement are calculated, and the global equilibrium model, the global trade analysis project (GTAP) model, is used to simulate and analyze the impact of the Korea-China free trade area on the output and trade of the two countries. Research design, data and methodology: The study conducted a survey on 2018 year GTAP 9.0data. After empirically analyzing the data, we believe that the Major industry in Korea and China will maintain its growth momentum. Results: This study shows that under the assumption that the average tariff of China and South Korea at the beginning of FTA was reduced to 20%, two scenarios were simulated. Two scenarios are simulated under the assumption that the average tariff of China and South Korea FTA will be reduced to 10%. Conclusions: This paper assumes that the average tariff of China-Korea FTA is set at 20%, 10% and zero tariff respectively in the early, middle and long term of the FTA construction. It considers the impact of China-Japan-Korea FTA on China- Korea FTA.

  • The purposes of the study is to evaluate the discrepancy between user's expectation and satisfaction degree in the service of uTradeHub. In this regard, this study infers general solutions in order to induce the intersection area using IPA technique. Then this paper will present directions to improve the service of uTradeHub. In terms of methodology, this article disclosed that IPA model approach is greatly useful to evaluate user's attribute. First, variables like the link of different works(f1), trust of system(f4), information connection(f7) are located on the first quadrant. This means that importance and satisfaction are all high variables for user. So, this is very important variables that need continuous administration in order to maintain present state. Second, variables such as the speed of information acquisition(f2), improvement of use(f3), stability of system(f5) are located on the second quadrant. This means that user's importance is high but user's satisfaction is low. Therefore, this area needs an active improvement strategy and quick maintenance for e-Trade application. Third, variables like the appropriateness of information usage fees(f8), easy subscription(f9), customer support service(f10) are located on the third quadrant. Because these variables are all low for user's importance and satisfaction, we have to arrange strong and radical remedy for e-Trade service. Finally, variables like information offer(f6) are located on the fourth quadrant. This means that user's satisfaction is high but user's importance is low. The research result suggests that e-Trade service development would be re-organised as much as user feels the importance of process innovation.

  • This study was done through Panel Gravity Model to analyze the trade pattern of Korean motor industry and empirical analysis was also performed on the effect of regional economies joining to the Korean trade is to draw out some implications. Compared with per capita pattern regarding the income levels of both the countries, the results indicated that trade of Korean motor industry followed GDP pattern in accordance with the overall market. The results of effect on regional economic integration to Korean motor industry reflected 179% and 198% increase in motor trade industry and motor parts trade, respectively. To expand the trade of Korean motor industry at the international competitiveness level, focus should be made on smaller, smarter and greener car with lesser impact on the environment. Hence, the present investigation suggested that government should not delay in retaining the core technology as well as private sector should also aggressively invest in the market.

  • In Southeast Asia, Myanmar is the largest country of the continent with land area 676,577 km2 that is three times higher than Korea. Nonetheless, a lot of diversity in agricultural enterprises is available in Myanmar as different climatic zones are available due to its unique location from north to south and east to west. Agriculture is considered the most important industry in Myanmar that largely relies on rice production. During 2009-10, rice and black gram are also among the major export items of Myanmar. Wheat, maize and sorghum are among the other major crops of the country and cultivation area of wheat and corn has been steadily increasing. Sesame is an important oilseed crop of Myanmar that is cultivated on the largest area. Presently, Myanmar has trade relations with Thailand, India and China.

  • Since China opened its door to the world in 1978, its economic development had been concentrated in the Eastern and Western area compared with the middle area. From 2000s, the Chinese government started to develop the middle area in terms of balanced development. With this goal, "Plan on Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone", and "One Belt and One Road" has implemented in Zhengzhou, where is the an important traffic center in middle area. Meanwhile, the foreign trade of Zhengzhou has been increased about 10 times between 2009 and 2018. In particular, its growth is the fastest among six central cities in 2018 from the lowest in 2009. This study investigates whether the Chinese government policy has an effect on the foreign trade of Zhengzhou. We find that based on the regression analysis of the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the government policies has a positive impact on the development of Zhengzhou's foreign trade. It is meaningful that the government policy focused on the advantage of Zhengzhou contributes its development of foreign trade.

  • This study empirically analyzes the patterns of import and export of air cargo between Korea and EU member states. In order to understand the detailed characteristics of the air transport sector, the amount of trade was analyzed by dividing it into exports, imports, and trades. As a result of the analysis, in terms of exports, imports, and trade, both EU member states' GDP per capita and Korea's GDP showed positive directions, while EU member states' GDP and Korea's per capita GDP both showed negative directions. In addition, international oil prices and exchange rates, which were expected to have an effect on aviation trade, did not show significant results in this study. On the other hand, when applying the fixed-effect model, both the country area and the number of airports excluded from the analysis were analyzed as positive directions as a result of the Houseman Taylor analysis.

  • Purpose - Semiconductors are a significant export item for Korea that is expected to continue to contribute significantly to the Korean economy in the future. Thus, the semiconductor industry is a critical component in the 4th Industrial Revolution and is expected to continue growing as the non-face-to-face economy expands as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, this paper aims to empirically investigate how semiconductors are imported and exported in Korea from a global supply chain perspective by analysing import and export data at the micro-level. Design/methodology - This study conducts a multifaceted analysis of the global supply chain for semiconductors and related equipment in Korea by examining semiconductor imports and exports by semiconductor type, year, target country, mode of transportation, airport/port, and domestic region, using import/export micro-data. The visualisation, flow analysis, and Bayesian Network methodologies were used to compensate for the limitations of each method. Findings - Korea is a major exporter of semiconductor memory and has the world's highest competitiveness but is relatively weak in the field of system semiconductors. The trade deficit in 'semiconductor equipment and parts' is clearly growing. As a result, continued investment in 'system semiconductors' and 'semiconductor equipment and parts' technology development is necessary to boost exports and ensure a stable supply chain. Originality/value - Few papers on semiconductor trade in Korea have been published from the perspective of the global supply chain or value chain. This study contributes to the literature in this area by focusing on import and export data for the global supply chain of the Korean semiconductor industry using a variety of approaches. It is our hope that the insights gained from this study will aid in the advancement of SCM research.

  • Purpose - This paper investigates the trade effect of the Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (KCFTA) which coincides with political conflicts between the two countries due to the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in Korea. The two events occurred in the same year and both are likely to affect trade between two countries but in opposite directions. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish between the trade effects from the KCFTA event and those from the THAAD event to evaluate the true FTA effects. However, this would be difficult when using only annual data. Accordingly, ex post studies to examine the trade effects of KCFTA are lacking in trustworthiness while many ex ante studies that conjecture the positive trade effects neglect the THAAD deployment impact. This paper aims to fill that gap. Design/methodology - Given that the KCFTA and THAAD events occurred in the same year but in different months, we use the monthly data from 2000 to 2019 of Korea's exports to bracket this period. We employ the difference-in-difference (DID) method within a gravity equation specification that uses hi-dimensional fixed effects to address various endogeneity issues and seasonal effects. We identify the net impact of KCFTA ratification from these two near-simultaneous events to quantify the effects of trade liberalization between these two countries. Findings - After isolating the THAAD effects on trade, the analysis creates a positive and statistically significant coefficient estimate of the KCFTA impact. In contrast, failing to isolate the THAAD effect produced a negative and statistically significant coefficient estimate of the KCFTA impact. Our results indicate that KCFTA independently increased Korea's exports to China by 10.2%, but that this increase was fully mitigated by the THAAD event. Further, our results verify that unobserved heterogeneity and multilateral resistance are technically difficult to account for in those estimations as that rely solely upon annual data, as this type of data are inadequate to control for the potential for endogeneity. Originality/value - This paper is one of the first studies to carefully evaluate the net trade effects of the KCFTA on Korea's largest trading partner while isolating the impact of simultaneously occurred political events that may influence trade in opposing directions. Our findings indicate that the lack of prior evidence of positive trade effects of the KCFTA when using annual data may be attributed to a failure to identify the impact of each event separately. This analysis supports using the correct modeling specification to avoid misleading conclusions when evaluating any important international trade policy.

  • In general, problems of delimitating trading area are that it takes much efforts depending on regions and the results are not scientific due to agencies' own rules and criteria. Especially, areas like Hongik University Station, where countless stores are opening and closing simultaneously, the field survey needs even more time and expenses. Despite of its drawbacks, it has been considered that the field survey is the most credible method in delimitating trading area. The purpose of this study, therefore, is reducing the field survey when agencies delimitate trade area by maximizing use of previously built GIS database and utilizing spatial analysis. Publicly notified individual land value and floating population of Gwanak-gu were utilized to delimitate trading areas. For an evaluation method, the study results were compared to other trading area boundaries.
