  • In this paper, it is shown that Carson's equation can still be applied for the calculation of the series reactance of transmission lines with no ground return current as well as the one with ground return. It is proved in the following method. First two voltage drop equations for three-phase three wire transmission line are derived, one without considering ground return and the other using Carson's equation. The impedance matrix of the two equations are different from each other. But if we put the condition of zero ground current, $I_a+I_b+I_c=0$, those two equations becomes the identical equations. Therefore even a transmission line is not grounded, its line parameters can still be obtained using the Carson's equation. It has been confused whether or not Carson's equation can be used for an ungrounded system. It is because where ever Carson's equation is shown in the book, it also says that the system has ground return current paths as a premise. It is also verified with EMTP studies on the test circuit.

  • Skeletal muscle tissues feature cellular heterogeneity, including differentiated myofibers, myoblasts, and satellite cells. Thanks to the presence of undifferentiated myoblasts and satellite cells, skeletal muscle tissues can self-regenerate after injury. In skeletal muscle regeneration, the collective motions among these cell types must play a significant role, but little is known about the dynamic collective behavior during the regeneration. In this study, we constructed in vitro platform to visualize the migration behavior of skeletal muscle cells in specific conditions that mimic the biochemical environment of injured skeletal muscles. We then visualized the spatiotemporal distribution of stresses arising from the differential collectiveness in the cellular clusters under different conditions. From these analyses, we identified that the heterogeneous population of muscle cells exhibited distinct collective migration patterns in the injury-mimicking condition, suggesting selective activation of a specific cell type by the biochemical cues from the injured skeletal muscles.

  • In this study, most of famous algorithms for the corner problem are listed. By comparing these with implemented codes and theoretical dissections, new algorithms are developed. These algorithms are combined by the existing auxiliary equations. All relating algorithms are numerically tested with 3 problems. Two problems have well-known analytical solutions and the result of another example is compared with the one of the published paper. The conducted research reveals the characteristics of existing algorithms and demonstrates newly developed algorithms can produce a reasonable solution by reflecting various type of boundary conditions.

  • Various drying conditions, temperatures (40 to $80^{\circ}C$) and durations (overnight to 72 hrs), for the particulate organic matter (POM) fraction after wet-sieving size fractionation have been applied for determination of POM contents in the weight loss-on-ignition method. In this study, we investigated the optimum drying condition for POM fraction in quantification of POM and/or mineral-associated organic matter (MOM; usually indirectly estimated). The influence of the drying conditions on quantifying POM was dependent upon soil properties, especially the amount of soil organic components. In relatively high organic soils (total carbon > 40 g/kg in this study), the POM values were significantly higher (overestimated) with drying at $55^{\circ}C$ than those values at $105^{\circ}C$, which were, for example, 173.2 and 137.3 mg/kg, respectively, in a soil studied. However, drying at $55^{\circ}C$ for longer than 48 hrs of periods produced consistent POM values even though the values were much higher than those at $105^{\circ}C$. Thus, indirect estimates of MOM (MOM = SOM-POM) also tended to be significantly impacted by the dry conditions. Therefore, we suggest POM fractions should be dried at $105^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs as determining POM and MOM contents. If the POM traction is needed to be dried at a lower temperature (e.g. $55^{\circ}C$) with a specific reason, at least 48 hrs of drying period is necessary to obtain consistent POM values, and a moisture correction factor should be determined to adjust the values back to a $105^{\circ}C$ weight basis.

  • Smart transformers are effective at reducing the weight and increasing the efficiency of traction systems for railroad applications. A smart transformer generally consists of rectifier modules and the Dual-Active-Bridge (DAB) converter modules. The efficiency of the smart transformer depends on not only the electrical characteristics, but also on the control method of the converter modules. Especially, a DAB converter has a high order degree of freedom of voltage modulation to control the power transferred through the high frequency transformer, and a voltage modulation method, are very critical for the efficiency of the DAB converter. This paper proposes a new voltage modulation method for the DAB converter to increase the efficiency in the low/medium power transfer condition. The proposed modulation method controls the reactive power in the high frequency transformer, making it zero. And, the switching loss is dramatically reduced by using the received converter module as a diode rectifier. The feasibility of the proposed modulation method is verified by computer simulation of the 900Vdc DAB converter power control.

  • The impacted teeth were surgically exposed by the closed-eruption technique and orthodontically retracted. The subject of this study are 24 patients(Mx. insiors; 10 Mx. canines; 14) who finished their treatment. The periodontal condition of the impacted teeth and the normally erupted proximal and opposed teeth were compared and analysed. The results are the followings ; 1. When the gingival index, plaque index, pocket depth and attached gingiva in periodontal evaluation were compared, there was no significant difference between the study group and the control group (P>0.05). 2. When the alveolar bone support of the mesial and the distal surface of the maxillary central incisors and proximal teeth was compared, there was no significant difference between the study group and the control group (P<0.05). 3. When the alveolar bone support of the maxillary canines was compared, there was no significant difference between the retracted teeth and the normally erupted teeth(P>0.05). The results above showed that the surgical exposure by closed-eruption technique followed by the orthodontic retraction of the impacted teeth has a positive influence on the regeneration of gingival tissue in clinical practice and is esthetically more stable. And it is considered that the clinicians should give attention to the direction of retraction power and the maintenance of normal shape of the alveolar bone in treatment of maxillary central incisors.

  • The development project of Korean High Speed Train (KHST) was started in 1996. As a national research project, the KHST project aims for a development of the next generation prototype train that has a maximum speed of 350 km/h. The development process of prototype KHST including 7 vehicles was completed last year and currently the prototype train is on its way of test running over the test track with gradually increased speed. The prototype KHST uses the real time network called TCN (Train Communication Network) for exchanging information between various onboard control equipments. After 10 years of development and modification period, TCN was confirmed as international standard (IEC61375-1) for the electrical railway equipment train bus. In the prototype KHST, all major control devices are connected by TCN and exchange their information. Such devices include SCU (Supervisory Control Unit), ATC (Automatic Train Control), TCU (Traction Control Unit), and so forth. For each device that sends and receives data using TCN, a device has to find out whether TCN is in normal or failure state before its data exchange. And also a device must have a proper method of data validation that was received in a normal TCN state. This is a one of the major important factors for devices using network. Some misleading information can lead the entire system to a catastrophic condition. This paper briefly explains how TCN was implemented in the prototype KHST train, and also shows what kind of the fault diagnosis method was adopted for a fail safe operation of TCN system

  • To assure the safety of rolling stock, it is important to perform the fatigue analysis of reduction gear unit in rolling stock considering a variation of velocity and traction motor capability. This paper presents fatigue analysis of the damage of reduction gear unit of railway vehicle under variable amplitude loading(VAL) based on quasi-static fatigue analysis using finite element model and linear Miner's rule. The VAL for the simulation was constructed from the tractive effort curve and train run curves of railway vehicle under commercial operation condition using MSC.ADAMS dynamic analysis. The finite element model for evaluating the carburizing effect on the gear surface was used for predicting the fatigue life of the middle gear based on strain-life based approach. The results showed that the frequent high starting torque due to a quick start as well as increasing numbers of stops at station would decrease the fatigue life of reduction gear unit.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the current as stray current and supplied current of the substation, on the DC railway power system. In DC railway power supply system, the running rails are usually used as the return conductor(negative-polarity) for traction load current. This condition mainly focuses on economic considerations, since it does not require the installation of an additional return conductor. But, problems of low resistance between the running rails for the return conductor and earth allows a significant part of the return load current to leak into the earth. This current is normally called to as leakage or stary current. This stary currents creates serious problems for any electrified matter in the underground. Therefore, reduction of stray current of the DC railway power supply system is also of direct benefit to the operational and safety aspects of the DC railway systems. In this paper, deal with the analysis of the current distribution on the DC railway power system applied the common grounding system, using SPLIT of CDEGS program.
