The impacts of membrane degradation due to chlorine attack on the rejection of inorganic salts and trace organic contaminants by nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were investigated in this study. The rejection of trace contaminants was examined at environmentally relevant concentrations. Changes in the membrane surface morphology were observed as a result of chlorine exposure. A small increase in rejection was consistently observed with all four membranes selected in this study after being exposed to a low concentration of hypochlorite (100 ppm). In contrast, a higher concentration of hypochlorite (i.e., 2000 ppm) could be detrimental to the membrane separation capacity. Membranes with severe chlorine impact showed a considerable decrease in rejection over filtration time, possibly due to rearrangement of the polyamide chains under the influence of chlorine degradation and filtration pressure. The reported results indicate that loose NF membranes are more sensitive to chlorine exposure than RO membranes. The impact of hypochlorite exposure (both positive and negative) on rejection is dependent on the strength of the hypochlorite solution and is more significant for the neutral carbamazepine compound than the negatively charged sulfamethoxazole.
Trace organic contaminants in deep-sea sediments near Dokdo were analyzed. Total PAMs concentration ranged 14.8-314 ng/g dry weight and high molecular weight PAHs were dominant. The highest PAHs concentration was detected at A19 which located at Ulleung Basin. Most of organochlorines were under detection limit. Among the detected organochlorines, DDT compounds were dominant and followed by HCHs and HCB. Butyltin compounds and most of organophosphorus pesticides were not detected. Vertical distribution of PAHs showed typical sub-surface maximum and decreasing trends depending on depth. The highest PAHs concentration reached 454ng/g. Some organochlorines, DDT, HCH was detected and also showed decreasing trends. Other target organic pollutants were not detected in core sediments. Abnormally high level of PAHs concentration in A19 was discussed and the input sources were inferred to be the transport of sludge derived pollutant dumped at dumping site 'Byung' by deep current.
This paper summarizes results of research on the electrochemical (EC) degradation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and iodine-containing contrast media (ICMs), with the focus on EC reductive dehalogenation. The efficiency of EC dehalogenation of DBPs increases with the number of halogen atoms in an individual DBP species. EC reductive cleavage of bromine from parent DBPs is faster than that of chlorine. EC data and quantum chemical modeling indicate that the EC reduction of iodine-containing DBPs (I-DBPs) is characterized by the formation of active iodine that reacts with the organic substrate. The occurrence of ICMs has attracted attention due to their association with the generation of I-DBPs. Indirect EC oxidation of ICMs using anodes that produce reactive oxygen species can result in a complete degradation of these compounds yet I-DBPs are formed in the process. Reductive EC deiodination of ICMs is rapid and its overall rate is diffusion-controlled yet I-DBPs are also produced in this reaction. Further progress in practically feasible EC methods to remove DBPs, ICMs and other trace-level organic contaminants requires the development of novel electrocatalytic materials, elimination of mass transfer limitations via innovative design of 3D electrodes and EC reactors, and further progress in the understanding of intrinsic mechanisms of EC reactions of DBPs and TrOC at EC interfaces.
Biological and ecological characteristics of Diporeia spp. are described including size, growth, life cycle, energy storage, temperature effect, bioturbation, feeding depth and sediment ingestion of Diporeia. Bioaccumulation and toxicity of organic contaminants and trace metals were reviewed in addition to an examination of the relationships among various condition indexes (i.e. wet weight, dry weight and body length) of Diporeia.

Bioremediation of trace metals in groundwater may require the manipulation of redox conditions via the injection of a carbon source. To simulate the numerous biogeochemical processes that will occur during the bioremediation of trace-metal-contaminated aquifers, a reactive transport model has been developed. The model consists of a set of coupled mass balance equations, accounting for advection, hydrodynamic dispersion, and a kinetic formulation of the biological or chemical transformations affecting an organic substrate, electron acceptors, corresponding reduced species, and trace metal contaminants of interest, uranium in this study. The redox conditions of the domain are characterized by estimating the pE, based on the concentrations of the dominant terminal electron acceptor and its corresponding reduced specie. This pE and the concentrations of relevant species we then used by a modified version of MINTEQA2, which calculates the speciation/sorption and precipitation/dissolution of the species of interest under equilibrium conditions. Kinetics of precipitation/dissolution processes are described as being proportional to the difference between the actual and calculated equilibrium concentration.
A micro porous PTFE membrane desolvator (MMD) was built and evaluated for the on-line removal of organic solvents to facilitate the determination of trace metal contaminants in the solvents by ICP-AES. Three organic solvents, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), methanol, and dimethy sulfoxide (DMSO) were studied. The MMD reduced organic solvent concentration in the sample aerosol stream by 82% to 89%, as indicated by monitoring C(I) emission. Net signal intensity of Fe, Al, and Cu was increasing with higher organic solvent concentration, with the rate of increase being solvent dependent. The signal intensities for Mg and Pb followed the trend with the C(I) signal. Changing the sweep gas flow rate affected the optimum signal intensity. Wine samples were analyzed by the method of standard addition. The concentrations of B, Al, and Mg were determined with a relative precision of less than 2.3%.

The polymeric FAB materials of air shower used in clean room of wafer industry have been outgassed with the dynamic headspace (ca.$100^{\circ}C$) for half an hour, and analyzed using GC-MS. The air in the clean room running air shower was sampled using sorbent tube method, and the organic compounds adsorbed in the sorbent tube were extracted using Soxhlet extraction method, and analyzed using GC-MS. The analytical results from FAB materials of air shower (electric over current relay, acryl plate. polycarbonate window, filter, fan housing, steel galvanized cold plate and canvas buffer) indicated that most of chemicals were originated from polymer fragments of FAB materials. Their analytical results have been compared with those from the air of clean room running air shower. These comparative results could lead to identify whether the sources of trace organic contaminants in clean room air are originated from the polymeric FAB material of air shower.
This study was conducted to assess the removal characteristics of taste and odor causing compounds(2-MIB and geosmin) and micro organic matters. GAC and BAC process consisting of Ozone/AOP and activated carbon was applied. As a result, the influent concentration of 2-MIB 159 ng/L and geosmin 371 ng/L were removed 42% and 86% by ozone 1.0 mg/L, and 58%, 90% by AOP(ozone 1.0 mg/L + $H_2O_2$ 0.5 mg/L). Also it showed less than 2 ng/L effluent in GAC process and 99.8% removal efficiency in BAC process. Therefore, BAC process combining ozone/AOP and GAC is effective for persistent removal of micro organic matters, taste and odor. It is needed for optimization of Ozone/AOP process according to influent concentrations.
Diesel exhaust particles (DEP) contain elemental carbon, organic compounds including Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals, and other trace compounds. Diesel exhaust is complex mixture of thousands of chemicals. Over forty air contaminants are recognized as toxicants, such as carcinogens. Most diesel exhaust particles have aerodynamic diameters falling within a range of 0.1 to $0.25{\mu}m$. DEP was classified as a definite human carcinogen (group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer at 2012 based on recently sufficient epidemiological evidence for lung cancer. Significant decreases in DEP and other diesel exhaust constituents will not be evident immediately, and outworn diesel car having longer mileage still threatens health of people in spite of recent remarkable development in diesel engine technology. Policy change in South Korea, such as introduction of diesel taxi, may raise health risk of air pollution in metropolitan area with these limitations of diesel engine. To protect people against DEP in South Korea, progressive strategies are needed, including disallowance of diesel taxi, more strict regulation of diesel engine emission, obligatory diesel particulate filter attachment in outworn diesel car, and close monitoring about health effects of DEP.
Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) by isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) interfaced with gas chromatography (GC) is a state of the art analytical technique for stable isotopes in earth sciences, environmental sciences and forensics. Since early 1990s, GC-IRMS has been widely used to investigate the authenticity of food in forensic science and to trace the sources of organic contaminants in environmental science. In Korea, a GC-IRMS was firstly installed at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) in early 2005. In this study, we introduce the GC-IRMS of the KBSI shortly to stimulate various isotope-related researches of Korea, and report preliminary CSIA results for BTEX of different manufacturers.
