A 14-year-old male patient was referred to us for evaluation of Right TMJ clicking sound and mandibular deviation during mouth opening. On examinaaation, protrusion and lateral excursion was also restricted. Radiographs showed hook-like curved elongation of Right coronoid process with limitation o right condylar translation. His past medical and dental history was noncontributory. This patient underwent an extraoral coronoidectomy and the specimen revealed coronoid process malformation mimicking condylar head. Microcoically, the specimen discloses mature bony trabeculae. At postoperative 5 days, physical therapy was instituted. At present, this patient could open his mouth well with any clicking sound and mandibular deviation. The asymmetric face of this patient is expectated to be corrected by periodic observation and remained growth porential. If not to be corrected, orthognathic surgery will be done.
Morphogenesis of rat spleen was studied by light and electron microscope from the fetal stage till the newborn or adult stages. The results indicate as follows: at the 14th day of gestation rat spleen, as an early form, consists of intercellular spaces and mesenchymal cells. And at this stage the spleen is in a premature state, then it appears its adult condition in structures after the 7th postnatal day. Erythropoiesis is shown to be an active process in rat spleen beginning about the 18th day of gestation, and once established the process continues at least till the 7th postnatal day. At the 20th day of gestation, there are splenic nodules, trabeculae, venous sinus, and granular leucocytes such as neutrophils and basophils in rat spleen. Lymphocytes appeared to be well differentiated at the 7th postnatal day and were present till the adult stage. While degenerating erythrocytes are phagocytosed by macrophages. In conclusion, rat spleen started to be appeared from the 14th day of gestation and erythropoiesis in rat spleen was carried out for about 10 days between prenatal and postnatal stage. Erythrophagocytosis was accomplished by macrophages and it is suggested that the proper functions of rat spleen set off from the 7 th postnatal day when its structures are similar to the adult's.

Using FEM, we analyzed the stress changes on early osteonecrosis of femoral head as the necrotic area increases. A 3D FEM model of proximal femur was made from the CT scam data of fresh frozen adult proximal femur with the material properties from literature. The model consisted of 5994 elements and 5275 nodes. FE analyses were peformed using MSC/NASTRAN. At normal states, stress transmission is mainly along the primary compression trabeculae(PCT). Until 60% involvement of PCT with necrotic lesion, stress transmission is still along the remained PCT. When the PCT involvement is from 60% to 85%, stress transmission is along the PCT and margin of the necrotic lesion. When involvement is more than 85%, stress is mostly transferred to posterior part of femoral head.
The bone regeneration effects of copper oxide on experimentally induced fibular fracture were examined in 36 New Zealand white male rabbits. They were divided into two groups: non-treated group (control group) and copper oxide treated group (treatment group). A fibular fracture was created by an osteotomy in the middle of the fibula and 62.5 mg/kg of copper oxide was orally administrated during 7 days after operation in the treatment group. Radiological findings, histopathological examinations and hematoserological findings were observed to evaluate the bone regeneration effects of copper oxide on fibula fracture during 9 weeks. In radiological findings, the area of bone regeneration at the fracture site of the treatment group was significantly wider from 3 weeks to 6 weeks after administration of copper oxide than those of the control group (p < 0.05). In histopathological examinations, fracture healing in treatment group was faster than in control group. Also, histopathological responses of thick bony trabeculae and new bone marrow formation were shown in the treatment group, whereas many fibrous tissues and cartilages were mainly observed in the control group. No specific effects of copper oxide on the body was found in hematological and serological test during experimental period. These results showed that the copper oxide had a potential therapeutic application in the treatment of fracture and bone trauma.
[Purpose] This study compared differences in trabecular bone architecture and strength caused by jump and running exercises in rats. [Methods] Ten-week-old male Wistar rats (n=45) were randomly assigned to three body weight-matched groups: a sedentary control group (CON, n=15); a treadmill running group (RUN, n=15); and a jump exercise group (JUM, n=15). Treadmill running was performed at 25 m/min without inclination, 1 h/day, 5 days/week for 8 weeks. The jump exercise protocol comprised 10 jumps/day, 5 days/week for 8 weeks, with a jump height of 40 cm. We used microcomputed tomography to assess microarchitecture, mineralization density, and fracture load as predicted by finite element analysis (FEA) at the distal femoral metaphysis. [Results] Both jump and running exercises produced significantly higher trabecular bone mass, thickness, number, and fracture load compared to the sedentary control group. The jump and running exercises, however, showed different results in terms of the structural characteristics of trabecular bone. Jump exercises enhanced trabecular bone mass by thickening the trabeculae, while running exercises did so by increasing the trabecular number. FEA-estimated fracture load did not differ significantly between the exercise groups. [Conclusion] This study elucidated the differential effects of jump and running exercise on trabecular bone architecture in rats. The different structural changes in the trabecular bone, however, had no significant impact on trabecular bone strength.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a high-fat high-sucrose (HFHS) diet on previously reported adaptations of cardiac morphological and contractile properties to resistance training. [Methods] Twelve-week-old rats participated in 12-weeks of resistance exercise training and consumed an HFHS diet. Echocardiography and skinned cardiac muscle fiber bundle testing were performed to determine the structural and mechanical adaptations. [Results] Compared to chow-fed sedentary animals, both HFHS- and chow-fed resistance-trained animals had thicker left ventricular walls. Isolated trabecular fiber bundles from chow-fed resistance-trained animals had greater force output, shortening velocities, and calcium sensitivities than those of chow-fed sedentary controls. However, trabeculae from the HFHS resistance-trained animals had greater force output but no change in unloaded shortening velocity or calcium sensitivity than those of the chow-fed sedentary group animals. [Conclusion] Resistance exercise training led to positive structural and mechanical adaptations of the heart, which were partly offset by the HFHS diet.
Benign cartilaginous tumors, known as chondrogenic tumors, show cartilage components in the microscopic diagnosis. We present two clinical cases with cartilaginous tumors of the toes showing distinctive clinical manifestations. Two juvenile patients visited our outpatient clinic due to tumors with toenail deformities. A 10-year-old girl presented with a palpable mass with a nail deformity on the left third toe. The initial pathology report was soft tissue chondroma until complete resection. Another 15-year-old male patient visited the dermatology department with a toenail deformity and underwent a punch biopsy. The pathology report was fibrosis with myxoid degeneration. Excisional biopsies were performed for both patients. In the operative field, we observed exophytic tumors connected to the distal phalangeal bones. The final pathology reports were subungual osteochondroma on both patients. The specimen exhibited mature bone trabeculae with a focal cartilaginous cap. Benign cartilaginous tumors have a slow, progressive course and do not show significant symptoms. However, tumors in subungual areas are accompanied by toenail deformities and they can cause pain. Their clinical characteristics lead to a delayed diagnosis. Surgeons can be confused between soft tissue and chondrogenic tumors. When they conduct physical examinations, these categories should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

This study was performed to understand the irradiation effects on the mandibular condyle and mandibular growth in developing white rats. Forty eight white male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain aged 4 weeks, were devided into two groups; control group and experimental group. A single target dose of l0Gy of radiation was given to the mandibular condylar area and the observations of the photo analysis, radiologic, histopathologic and immunohistochemical study revealed as follows; 1. Animals killed one week after irradiation showed lesser increase in body weights, no difference in photo analysis and decreased thickness of cartilagenous layers of the condyle than the control group. 2. Two weeks after irradiation the weight increases were almost same in both irradiated and control groups and in photo analysis, the distance from Mental Foramen to Incisal tip (Mf-It) was longer than the controls. Repair processes were taken place in irradiated group, but the cartilagenous layers were thinner than the controls. 3. By the third week after exposure further repair was seen in the trabeculae and the distance from Condylion to Mandibular plane (Cd-Cd') was longer than the controls and the weight increases were almost same as the controls. 4. At 4 weeks after irradiation the cells of proliferating zone repaired to almost normal findings, but the cartilagenous cell layers were still thinner than the control animals. In photo analysis, the distances from Menton to Anterior Notch (Me-An), from First Molar to Mandibular plane (Fm-Fm') were shorter and the weight increases were lesser than the controls. 5. In the S-100 antibody, the positive cells were increased in number, but decreased reactivities were seen at the proliferating zone of the irradiated groups. In the Monoclonal Anti-Proteoglycan antibody and Type Ⅰ collagen antibody, the irradiated groups showed little decreased number of positive cells and in the Type Ⅱ collagen antibody, the differences between irradiated and control groups were undetectable in immunohistochemical study.

Traumatic bone cyst is a pathologic cavity that is not lined with epithelium. It is, therefore, not a true cyst. It may be a normal variant rather than a disease process. The etiology of the condition is unknown. This condition is occured widely ranging ages(2 to 75years), however, most are ,found during the second decade of life. Radiographically, this condition is radiolucent lesion with well-defined outline, scalloping of superior margins, Cyst enucleation and curettage is the treatment of choice. The authors compared and analyzed the clinicoradiologic features of the five cases of traumatic bone cyst, diagnosed at the Dental college hospital in Chosun University, Kwangju, Korea. The five cases were shown the followed results; 1. 3cases occured in second decade of life & no significant sex differences (M:F, 2:3) All cases occurred in mandible. 2. Two patients complained symptoms, but three cases had no symptom with encountering during routine examination. 3. In 3 of 5cases, teeth vitality existed except one tooth and no checking of teeth vitality in two cases. 4. All cases didn't have any accurate trauma history, but one case was in orthodontic treatment, another case was postextraction site area. 5. Radiologically, 'scalloping appearance' were evident in all cases; in 3 cases, multilocular tendency & only one case seen intact mandibular canal image. 6. Histologically, all section showed bone trabeculae with blastic activity, 2 cases showed no epithelial lining, and other 2 cases were seen innflammatory cell infiltration in edematous tissue. 7. Surgical intervention (curettage) was that treatment of choice.
This study was undertaken to obtain basic data of the sternal development in Korean native cattle from the earliest sternal formation to the ossification using histological and histochemical methods. Thrity three sterna were collected from a series of embryos and fetuses ranging from 11 to 225mm (estimated age 37~120days) in crown rump length. The bilateral sternal bars were observed in the 2nd group(CRL 21~3mm) of Korean cattle embryos. Those bars initiated to be fused in the 3rd group (CRL 31~4mm) and completed in the 7th group(CRL 71~80mm). The ossification centers were detected in the 8th group(CRL 81~90mm) also bilateral ossification centers were found in the same group. The typical epiphyseal plates, endochondral bone and calcium deposit were found in the 9th group(CRL 91~100mm). Osteocytes, osteoblasts, osteoclasts and myeloid cells appeared in ossification centers in the 10th group(more than CRL 101mm). The alcianophility responded markedly in the 9th group that was decreased and showed slightly positive reaction in territorial matrix of the 10th group. Marked positive reaction to PAS was observed in bony trabeculae in the 10th group. The positive reaction to calcium deposit by trichrome stain was observed initially in the hypertrophied zone of epiphyseal plate in the 9th group and was conspicuous in the calcified zone of epiphyseal plate in the 10th group. The 1st positive reaction to the von Kossa stain was observed in the 9th group.
