  • The dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamiyavanichii Balech, a producer of toxins causing paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), has recently been considered as one of main organisms responsible for toxication of shellfish in Japan. In this study, A. tamiyavanichii was subjected to a molecular phylogenetic analysis inferred from 28S rDNA D1-D2 sequences and a species-specific LSU rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide DNA probe was designed to identify A. tamiyavanichii using the whole cell-FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization). The sequences of the 28S rDNA D1-D2 region of A. tamiyavanichii showed no difference from A. cohorticular AF1746l4 (present name A. tamiyavanichii) and formed a distinct clade from the 'tamarensis species complex'. The probe, TAMID2, reacted specifically with A. tamiyavanichii cultured cells, without any cross-reaction with other species belonging to the same genus, including A. tamarense, A. catenella, A. affine, A. fraterculus, A. insuetum and A. pseudogonyaulax. In a test of cross-reactivity with a field sample, TAMID2 reacted consistently with only A. tamiyavanichii, indicating that the present protocol involving the TAMID2 probe might be useful for detecting toxic A. tamiyavanichii in a simple and rapid manner.

  • Using a nickel-chrome casting alloy called 'Rexillium V' which is also available as base metal alloy for dental ceramic crown, 4 types of mixtures(A, B, C, D) with old and new metal were prepared for cyclic casting. The results of cyclic casting can be outlined as follows: 1. For Vickers hardness after casting, specimen A and D tended to have lower hardness in the course of cyclic casting, while specimen B and C tended to higher hardness. 2. The results of X-ray diffraction analysis showed that major crystal phase contained nickelchrome compounds and carbide. 3. The observation results of SEM photographs after cyclic casting show that there was a significant tendency to have similar structures among experimental groups. 4. The results of EDX analysis after cyclic casting showed that there were little differences in chemical composition between parent metal and base metal alloy. Although industrial nickel-chrome cast alloy did not show any significant change in material properties even through cyclic casting over several times, it is recommended that more there be more in-depth studies on how to detect any potential corrosion, discoloration and toxication of dental ceramic crown implanted in patient's oral cavity.

  • Astilbe rubra (AR) is a perennial, belongs to the Saxifragaceae family, it contains tannin and triterpene. AR has been used in republic korea to improve toxication, fever, pain and convulsion. Recently, number of natural products have been analyzed for potential pharmacological activities including anti-cancer, anti-obesity and anti-diabetic medication. Consequently, we investigated the growth inhibition effect of Astilbe rubra water extract (WAC), ethanol extract (EAC) and bergenin on Hela cell (human adenocarcinoma cell). From whole plant of A. rubra, bergenin was isolated by column chromatography and its structures were identified by $^1H$, $^{13}C$ NMR and IT TOF-ESI MS. High extraction efficiency of bergenin was shown at 0.95% under 60 min reflux extraction with 50% MeOH. The MTS assay showed that EAC (ethanol extract) treatment increased cell death in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, EAC treatment on Hela cell increased apoptotic cell death and caspase-3 activity. Results suggest that EAC has growth inhibition effect on Hela cells, but not WAC and bergenin. $500{\mu}g/mL$ EAC treatment inhibited Hela cell at $60.2{\pm}1.5%$.

  • Polluting the air with such pollutants as CO, H₂S and SO₂, industrial development huts increased the danger of gas toxication. Futhermore, as the: living standard goes higher, the consumption of explosive hydrocarbonic gases such as butane(C₄H/sub 10/) or propane(C₃H/sub 8/) has been soaring, which results in the danger of a gas explosion. As measures to cope with such dangers, the development of highly sensitive gas sensors, gas detectors adopting gas-sensing technologies, and gas recognition systems are urgently required. The objective of the present research is to develop a gas recognition system that is capable of identifying specific types of selected gases by formulating a semiconductor-typed gas sensor array, which not only improves the selectivity of semiconductor-typed gas sensors but also minimizes the erect of drifts on a single sensor signal, and applying the input pattern data of gases detected by the array to a neural network.
