  • Domestic building finishing materials are being evaluated according to KS F 2271 standards according to the notification of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and this test is evaluated using laboratory animals. In this study, experiments were conducted on highly combustible organic insulation materials such as EPS, urethane, and phenolic foam. The purpose of this study was to analyze the cause of the behavioral suspension of the experimental mice by measuring the average behavioral suspension time of the mice caused by the harmful gas generated when these three types of insulation materials were burned. FTIR analysis and smoke density experiment were performed as a cause analysis method for the behavioral suspension of mice, and the experimental results were analyzed by dividing the causes of behavioral suspension into suffocation by particulate matter and toxic inhalation by gaseous substances. As a result of the test, urethane was evaluated as the most harmful insulation material, and as a result of FTIR analysis and smoke density test as a cause analysis for the gas toxicity test results, it is judged that the behavioral stop of the rats by suffocation is higher than the effect of toxic inhalation. This study is a basic study on the cause analysis of harmful gases, and it will be necessary to prepare the toxicity basis and analyze various materials and gases.

  • Biorenovation is a method that converts existing compounds into new compounds through the enzymatic action of microorganisms. Biorenovation has expected effects such as reducing toxicity of compounds and increasing their activity. In this study, we successfully synthesized Luteolin-7-O-glucoside (L7G) through biorenovation and investigated its inhibitory effect on melanin production in α-Melanocyte stimulating hormone induced B16F10 mouse melanoma cells. We confirmed that Luteolin was toxic at 50, 100 and 200 µM, but our L7G in same concentration was not toxic for B16F10 mouse melanoma cells and also showed significant reduction in melanin production and tyrosinase activity. In addition, while investigating the effect of L7G on factors involved in melanin synthesis through western blotting, we were able to confirm that the MITF and tyrosinase protein synthesis was inhibited in treatment with L7G, however, tyrosinase related protein-1 (TRP-1) and dopachrome tautomerase (TRP-2) expression was not affected. So we derived a conclusion that through biorenovation we could produce compounds like L7G with improved activity and reduced toxicity for possible use as an active ingredient with whitening functionality in cosmetics. It also suggests that the application of biorenovation has potential usefulness in developing anti-inflammatory materials. It also suggests that the application of bio-renovation has potential usefulness in the development of inflammatory material. We applied Biorenovation technology to Distylium racemosum extract (DR) to generate Distylium racemosum biorenovation product (DRB), and investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of DRB in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated RAW264.7 macrophages. We are applying technology to Biorenovation Distylium racemosum extract (DR) Distylium racemosum was to create a biorenovation product (DRB), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of DRB in RAW264.7 macrophages treated for.

  • Sophorae radix extract (SRE) has been registered as an environment-friendly organic material that is widely used in the cultivation of crops in Korea. Matrine, the active ingredient in SRE, was reported as a toxic substance in the nervous system in mice. However, no information is available on its toxic effects in other organisms. Therefore, antimutagenicity and two kinds of genotoxicity tests (bacterial reverse mutation and chromosome aberration test) of two samples of SRE were investigated in this study. Antimutagenicity test was experimented by using bacterial reverse mutation test. In the reverse mutation test, Salmonella Typhimurim TA98, TA1535 and TA1537 were used to evaluate the mutagenic potential of SRE. Bacterial reverse mutation test was also performed on positive and negative control groups in the presence of the metabolic activation system (with S-9 mix) and metabolic non-activation system (without S-9 mix). In the chromosome aberration test, Chinese hamster lung cells were exposed to SRE for 6 or 24 hours without S-9 mix, or for 6 hours with S-9 mix. Negative and positive control groups were experimented for chromosome aberration test. As a result, the number of mutated colonies induced by 4-NQO were reduced by SRE treatment in all strains, indicating that SRE may have antimutagenic effects. Reverse mutation was not shown at all concentrations of SRE, regardless of application of the metabolic activation system. In the chromosomal aberration test, one of the SRE sample gave a suspicious positive result at 250 ${\mu}g/ml$ in the presence of S-9 mix. For the more adequate evaluation of the genotoxic potential of SRE samples, other in vivo genotoxicity study is needed.

  • This study Provides the treatment methods of liquid wastes from the dissolution/purification process of nuclear fuel raw material and the fabrication process of nuclear fuel powder. One of the treatment methods is to process liquid waste from uranium raw material dissolution/purification process. This waste, of the strong acid, can be reused to dissolve the fine ADU particles in filtrate which is ADU waste of pH 8.0 converted from AUC waste after recovery of uranium. To dissolve the fine ADU particles, ADU filtrate was pretreated to pH 4.0 with the dissolution/purification waste, and then mixed with the lime to pH 9.2 and aged for 30 minutes. From this processing, uranium content of the filtrate was decreased to below 3ppm. The waste from fuel powder fabrication is emulsified solution dispersed with fine oil droplets. This emulsion was destroyed effectively by adding and mixing the nitric acid with rapid heating at the same time. After this processing, $Na_2U_2O_7$ compound is produced by addition of NaOH. Optimum condition of this processing was shown at pH 11.5, and uranium content of the filtrate was analyzed to 5ppm. To remove the trace of uranium in the filtrate, lime should be added. Otherwise, 4N nitric acid was used to destroy the emulsion directly, and then lime was added to this waste. Uranium content of the treated filtrate was below 1 ppm. In addition to these wastes, the trace of uranium in filtrate after recovery of uranium from the AUC waste which is produced during PWR power preparation, is treated with NaOH to takeup fluorine(F) in the waste because fluorine is valuable and toxic material. In the finally treated waste, uranium was not detected.

  • Since the regulation of MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) had started from July 1996, employers were required to furnish MSDS for the chemicals in use in their workplace. However, many MSDS did not contain upright information for the chemicals, and they were not updated regularly, and were not written in the standard format required by the Industrial Safety and Health Act (ISHA). The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the reliability of MSDS for mixed solvents, 2) to provide reliable MSDS to employers or employees, 3) to find out any difficulties in implementing MSDS after the initiation, and 4) to promote regular MSDS updating and to ensure the reliability of MSDS for chemical manufacturers. To check the reliability of MSDS of mixed chemicals, 21 samples of mostly degreasing solvents were collected along with their MSDS from the work place. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass selective detector(GC-MSD). Their components were classified as saturated hydrocarbon, cyclic hydrocarbon, aromatics, and halogen containing hydrocarbon, and the amount of each class were measured. Manufacture's MSDS were compared with the actual composition of the collected samples, and further examined the reliability by checking whether the chemicals analyzed were included in the MSDS correctly. Finally, each item of MSDS was evaluated whether the MSDS correspond to the regulation required by ISHA. The results were following: 1) most of the degreasing solvents in MSDS were incorrect in their composition and contents, 2) the information in the MSDS including hazard classification, exposure level, toxicity, regulatory information were incorrectly provided, and 3) some MSDS did not disclose carcinogens in their MSDS. Continuous monitoring of MSDS was required to ensure reliability of MSDS. The Chemicals containing hydrocarbons from C10-C15 need to be tested to provide toxicity data. In addition, governmental support for providing correct MSDS was recommended to ensure reliability of MSDS. The MSDS regulation relating to the confidential business information may need to be revised to ensure reliability of MSDS.

  • Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development (ESSD)" is a key word in recent years. The construction industry, have put a great influence on ergonomic and sustainable environment. Recently, "green building certifications", such as Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and eco-friendly material regulation have been established. With this regard, new construction and aged-housing remodeling projects are required to meet these certification criteria. Apartment residents have great concern on eco-product, since many cases are reported that Sick Building Syndrome is caused by toxic substance from building materials. Aged-housing remodeling construction has a unique characteristic in that the residents are already determined prior to construction execution. Therefore, the analysis of resident's need for building materials in aged-housing remodeling is relatively easy compared to new building construction. As such, it is very important to analyze their preferences for eco-friendly materials prior to project execution. The purpose of this study is to find the needs of residents and priority of their needs. Based on their needs and priority, this paper provides a new strategy in using environment-friendly materials and maximizing their satisfaction level when aged housing remodeling is constructed. In addition, this paper provide new criteria in selecting new developed environmental materials in remodeling projects for the purpose of improving the safety and health level in construction industry.

  • The fire accident is a representative type of disaster that can largely impact on business. Therefore, precautionary measures and rapid initial response is very important when a disaster occurs. The storage of porous combustibles is inevitable in coal yard, plywood processing industry, and others that are currently operating. Initial fire fighting of fire and identifying the ignition point in such a porous combustible storage space are so difficult that if the initial response is failed, being led to deep-seated fire, surface fire is likely to result in secondary damage. In addition, deep-seated fire can cause personal injuries and property damage due to a large amount of toxic gases and reignition. Therefore damage reduction measures is required around the storage space to handle a porous flammable. Improving the penetration performance of the concentration of the surfactant is carried out as underlying study, which is about an deep-seated fire extinguishing efficiency augmentation when using wetting agents. The porous materials used in the experiments is radiata pine wood flour, which occupies more than 75% of the domestic wood market. Fire fighting water is selected as Butyl Di Glycol (BDG), which is being used for infiltration extinguishing agent, and the experiment was carried out by producing a standard solution. The experiment was carried out on the basis of the Deep-Seated Fire Test of NFPA 18. The amount of watering, porous material to the internal amount of penetration, and runoff measurement out of the porous material was conducted. According to experimental results, as the surface tension is reduced, the surfactant concentration macroscopic penetration rate decreases, but infiltration to a porous material is shown to have growth characteristics.

  • Since nanoporous silica aerogel was first synthesized in 1931, its potential as an ultra-lightweight superinsulation material has been steadily attracting attention. Silica aerogel is the best thermal insulation material to date. However, the potential applications of this lightweight material have so far been hindered by its inherent fragibility and brittleness arising from its ultra-porous nature. Although the monolithic form of silica aerogel has the best ultra-lightweight superinsulation properties, it cannot be used in this form. Instead it is used in the form of powders, particles, and blankets. However, these forms still have shortcomings. Silica aerogel is most widely applied in the form of a fiber-reinforced aerogel blanket, but this form is likely to generate dust when handled. Although silica aerogel particles have been proven to be non-toxic to humans, dust formation remains a major barrier to the widespread application of silica aerogel blankets. This paper will investigate the unique properties of silica aerogel and determine what fields it can be used in or potentially be used in due to its unique properties. In addition, we will review the important advances in silica aerogel synthesis technology and its commercialization so far, and then consider the problems that exist for its widespread commercialization in the future and how to overcome them.

  • A pilot-scale test for production of biogas was conducted in an specially designed anaerobic digester (KH-ABC) in which the highly concentrated organic waste (food-waste and piggery-manure) was treated. The effect of inhibitive material to the reaction on anaerobic digestion and the feasibility of digested fluid for the liquefied fertilizer were investigated. The production rate of biogas, the concentration of methane($CH_4$) in biogas, and the digesting rate of volatile solid(VS) were analyzed in the variance of the operating conditions ; the influent rate, the mixture ratio of food waste and piggery manure, and the hydraulic retention time(HRT), etc. The production rate of biogas increased from 1.2 to $2.0kg-VS/m^3{\cdot}d$ with the organic loading rate(OLR). The most suitable operating conditions were recorded at $6m^3/day$ of an influent rate, 2:3 of the raw material mixture ratio(food waste : piggery manure) and 25 days of HRT, respectively. Under those conditions, the production rate of biogas, the concentration of methane($CH_4$) in biogas and the digesting rate of volatile solid(VS) were $220m^3/day$, 64%, and 70%, respectively. The concentration of inhibitive materials was below toxic standard and the anaerobic digested fluid(raw material mixture ratio of 3:7) could meet the condition of the liquefied fertilizer.
