  • The limonoid compound (28-deacetyl sendanin0 isolated from the fruit of Melia toosendan SIEB. et ZUCC. was evaluated on anticancer activity. According to a standard in vitro cytotoxicity assy, eight human cancer cell lines and SRB assay were introduced for present evaluation. As a positive standard, adriamycin was tested in parallel. The cell lines were originated from six different organs. In view of dose-response profiles to 28-deacetyl sendanin, the most sensitive cells were SF-539 and PC-3 which were derived from CNS and prostate, respecitively. In contrast, all the cell lines responded similarly to adriamycin to give rise to nearly indentical six cell lines were more sensitive to 28-deacetyl sendanin and two were more resistant. As a result, 28-deacetyl sendanin had more senstive and selective inhibitory effects on in vitro growth of human cancer cell lines in a comparison with adriamycin.

This systemic review focuses on traditionally used medicinal plants found in the Barak Valley as reported in different ethnobotanical surveys. Methods: We searched various databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, to find ethnomedicinal surveys conducted in the Barak Valley. The search was performed using different terms, including ethnomedicinal survey, folk medicine, indigenous knowledge, and Barak Valley. Potential articles were identified following the exclusion and inclusion criteria. Results: A total of eight ethnobotanical surveys were included in this study. We identified a total of 216 plant species belonging to 167 genera and 87 families, which are widely used by the ethnic communities who live in the rural areas of Barak Valley for the treatment of various diseases and ailments. Conclusion: Folk medicine is the result of decades of accumulated knowledge and practices by people who live in rural communities based on their needs and provides an important source of information to assist the search for new pharmaceuticals. Therefore, available information on traditional medicinal plants needs to be explored scientifically to find effective and alternative treatments for different diseases.

  • Since 1997, Dr. Shin-ya Nishimura has been developing an actual town planning project named the "Gangi Project". Students, inhabitants and local professionals walk around Omotemachi, examine the characteristics of the environment and the inhabitants' way of life, discuss plans and designs for traditional wooden arcades called locally "gangi". Students and inhabitants build the gangi together every year. The purpose of this study is to clarify how an experimental project aiming to preserve a living environment obtains sustainability as an actual town planning exercise. The research hypothesizes that sustainable town planning should include strategies for financial autonomy, active participation of inhabitants, supports from local professionals, an acceptance of changing environments, and responsible construction. The project has been carried out as a part of actual town planning, and continues to create a daily living environment based on the recent economical and industrial situation of the town. By focusing on the influences of the project on the town and inhabitants, the study has revealed the possibility of an actual town planning with small budget, and importance of a collaborative relationship with various participants in order to foster a sense of responsibility regarding the construction. The project also highlights the implication that sustainable town planning creates not only a participatory system but also a collaborative one in which participants take responsibility for the issues involved in the construction process.

  • Eco-town development projects have often prevailed throughout the World to initiate the new form of sustainable development plans. As a future development type, the eco-town project shares underlying notions with sustainable development, which has been recently revised into a wider definition; (i) energy efficiency, (ii) climate adaptation, and (iii) socio-economic development. There are four types of eco-town projects based on its characteristics and aims depending on project sites, regions, or countries. This paper tried to demonstrate the types of eco-town projects and summarizes its strategy plans from each type. Many eco-town cases can be placed in one of types, however there cannot be strictly discrete classification by its complicated and composite characteristics of them. In conclusion, the analyzed types can be a useful strategy plan for pursuing further eco-town projects in domestic as well as in international regions.
