In this paper, calculation of towing force required to tow the ship and experiments to verify its appropriacy are discussed. Friction, wind and wave-making resistance of vessel are considered to calculate towing force of specified vessel. Propeller resistance is also reflected and it is assumed that the propellers are locked. Node analysis to estimate additional resistance on towline is applied. Total towing force could be obtained by adding the ship's resistance and towline resistance. Experiments with training ship SAE YU DAL was executed to check the effectiveness of calculation methods and some comparison between experiments and calculation results was also done. From the comparative analysis, we confirmed that towing speed is primary terms in the calculation of towing force and propeller resistance is a major elements of ship's resistance with the increasing of towing speed. We can see that additional resistance induced by yawing of ship during towing have to be considered for total tow resistance.

To investigate the midwater trawl gear available for the Korean near sea trawlers, the authors carried out a field experiment on the attitude and the opening efficiency of the otter board with the Pusan 404 (160GT, 750ps), a training ship of National Fisheries University of Pusan. The experimental trawl gear was designed to be operable by the ship and the otter board was made of single iron plate with 12% camber ratio. The special-prepared potentiometric angle detector was used for determining the attitude, and the 50 KHz fish finder for the opening between the otter boards. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The angle of attack varied by moving the towing point on the towing plate of the otter board. It showed 33 to 36 degrees when the point was set at the outmost position, 25 to 31 degrees at the middle position and 19 to 30 degrees at the inmost position, with a decreasing tendency according to the increase of towing speed in each cases. 2. The heel of the otter board always occured inwards, increasing slightly according to the increase of towing speed. 3. The tilt of the otter board always occured outwards, increasing slightly according to the move of the towing point inwards, and decreasing slightly according to the increase of towing speed. 4. The opening between otter boards showed the largest value when the towing point was set at the outmost position.
Fishing selectivity is determined by the level of voluntary escaping behavior in accordance with decision-making based on the relationship between fish size and mesh size. This study examined movement during the swimming behavior of black porgy in a trawl's towing cod-end and analyzed the movement components such as swimming speed, angular velocity of turning, and distance to the net over time. Most of the observed fish exhibited an optomotor response, maintaining position and swimming speed without changing direction. Others exhibited erratic or 'panic' behavior with sudden changes in swimming speed and direction. The latter behavior involved very irregular and aperiodic variations in swimming speed and angular velocity, termed 'chaotic behavior.' Thus, the results of this study can be applied to a chaotic behavior model as a time series of swimming movements in the towing cod-end for the fishing selectivity.

Fishing efficiency of a trawl vessel can be enhanced by increasing the swept area per unit time, which can be attained either by increasing the mouth size of the net, or by increasing the towing speed. To improve fishing and fuel efficiency of trawl vessels targeting fishes of greater mobility, in which the towing speed is more critical in determining fishing efficiency, we conducted a series of model tests to evaluate the performance of the newly-designed nozzle propeller before installing it in a trawl vessel to verify its towing speed and fuel efficiency in the sea. By conducting further model tests in the experimental basin, we redesigned the propeller of stern trawler to improve the resistance and propulsion performance. Through actual fishing operations, we evaluated the improvement in fuel and fishing efficiency by installing the new nozzle propeller. The trawling speed increased by 0.6kts at the same engine power (RPM), while the engine margin increased by more than 20%. The increased towing speed by installing the redesigned propeller is expected to enhance fishing performance through increasing the number of hauling- and casting operations per unit times, while shortening the towing duration. Analysis of the Catch-Per-Unit-Effort (CPUE) data indicated that the mean CPUE of trawl fishery increased from 3.04kg/m in year 2007 to 6.15kg/m in year 2008, confirming enhanced fishing efficiency by adopting the redesigned propeller.

When a disabled ship is being towed in a seaway, the speed and direction of the towed ship are estimated by using the towing force and direction of the selected tug boats at the predicted sea conditions including the wind and currents. In this paper, prediction method at the towing conditions of the various towing operations for a disabled ship are studied. The proposed calculation method suggests firstly the method to import the speed and resistance of the forward direction of the towed ship calculated by the existing computer program, second, the method to calculate the speed and resistance of the towed direction of the towed ship acquired from the selected tug boats at the initial towing conditions and lastly, the method to calculate the speed and resistance of the towed direction for the towed ship at the stable towing conditions. These calculation methods have been applied to the computer program and this program has been approved to be a useful program, capable of appropriately predicting the towed ship's conditions.

Trawlers have to a sufficient towing force due to it's characteristics of the high performance. The newly constructed trawler with the conventional propellers shows the sufficient towing force, so that the propeller and engine are optimized. In the 1970s, many trawlers were imported from overseas by Korean fisheries industries. But the engine output degradation with year by year caused the trawlers to decrease the towing speed of the vessels. On the previous studies, the nozzle propeller had not so good efficiency with increasing of resistance in high-speed cruising operation over 15knots. But the trawling operation is just required the higher thrust and towing force, so that the nozzle propeller is very profitable for the it's effectiveness. A new nozzle propeller was designed for the 4,462G/T trawler, Dong-San, operated by Dongwon Industries Co., Ltd. to improve the towing speed, and the model tests were performed. The model ship and model propeller are preciously manufactured and used model tests in basin. The resistance test and propeller open water test were performed for the cases of the half and full loads. The required engine horse power and RPM were evaluated analytically by the speed-power curve, when the trawler was equipped with the nozzle propeller. The results of tests showed that the towing speed 4.85knots on the design load waterline requires the 200 engine RPM and 2,567ps in the delivered horsepower.

Towing performance of a midwater trawl system was examined aboard the training ship KAYA(2900ps) at the East Sea using the midwater trawl gear that had been designed and manufactured in accordance with the vessel. In this experiment, the trawl system data, the towing speed, the length and tension of the warp, net mouth height, and the depth of otter boards and net were measured and analyzed. The results are as follows: 1. In case of heaving in the warp with constant towing speed, the tension was suddenly increased and then again was reduced and after returned to the original steady state tension. At this time, net height was reduced a bit by ascension of ground rope, but returned to it’s original value. In the case where the warp was paid out, the tension was suddenly decreased and after increased and then returned to the tension of the original state, and the net height was greatly increased instantly by the sinking of the ground rope and then returned to the steady state 2. In the case of increased towing speed mm constant warp length, the tension was increased, and reducing the net height, the gear depth was decreased. On the other hand, in the case where towing speed was reduced, the tension was reduced and the gear depth and net height was increased. 3. Otter boards show a swing motion in the scope of 5~ 10m continuously. Otter boards responded to the state change of the trawl system at first, and then the motion of the net appeared. 4. The depth of net center was about 20m deeper than that of the otter boards, it shows about 0.4 times the warp length at the 4knots towing speed.
In this study, the static and modal analyses to find the characteristic of eigenvalues for a towed cable were with a free boundary condition at the bottom end carried out with numerical study. The resulting numerical code with finite element method was used to study sample problems for a cable with towing speeds. After tracing the equilibrium state with a towing speed through the static analysis, modal analysis on the basis of static results was performed. The static top tension for a critical towing speed is nearly 50 percent of what it was for a free hanging pipe. From static analyses, it is found that towing speed has a noticeable effect on top tension of a towed pipe. At a high towing speed, differences between the first and second periods become larger. Compared to the fundamental period for a free hanging pipe, that for a towed pipe with a critical towing speed is approximately 1.4 times larger. This result is very important point in that the lock in condition and tension of the towed cable system with top excitation can be predicted. The corrected close form solution to solve natural periods for a towed cable was presented in this study. The code is validated by comparison of the results of theoretical and numerical studies. Two results were in very good agreement. This study can contribute to predicting the lock-in condition and tension for a towed cable or pipe with top excitation.
This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the towing characteristics of a barge under various wind conditions. First, stability criteria, including the wind force, were derived based on the linear motion equations of a towed vessel. The effect of the wind force on the towing stability was investigated using stability criteria. Next, towing simulations were carried out using a nonlinear time-domain simulation method. In this case, the towline was modeled as a simple spring-damper, and the wind force was computed using the wind coefficient from CFD calculations. Simulations were conducted for a barge under a constant towing speed and constant wind speed conditions. The effect of the wind direction on the slewing motion was also observed. In addition, a series of numerical simulations using variable wind speeds were performed for the present barge with and without a skeg.
