Combined effects of temperature and arsenic on hematological parameters of tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (틸라피아의 혈액성상에 미치는 온도와 비소의 복합적 영향)

  • Experiments were carried out to determine the hematological changes in freshwater tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, after water temperature (20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$) and arsenic concentrations (200, and 400 ppb) exposure 20 days. The RBC count and hematocrit (Ht) were significantly increased in As 400 ppb and water temperature $30^{\circ}C$. Hemoglobin (Hb) was significantly increased under combined As (200 and 400 ppb) and water temperature $30^{\circ}C$. The tilapia exposed to water temperature $30^{\circ}C$ and As concentration 400 ppb increase significantly in calcium concentration. The high concentrations of total protein and glucose concentrations were observed at water temperature $30^{\circ}C$ and As concentration 400 ppb. A significant increment GOT and GPT activities in the tilapia serum noticed at water temperature (25 and $30^{\circ}C$) and As concentration (200, 400 ppb). These results indicate that tilapia can be affected by high water temperature ($30^{\circ}C$) and As concentration (400 ppb) in terms of inorganic matter, organic matter and enzyme activity in serum.

  • In this paper, we propose a CQS(Calendar Queue Scheduler) architecture which was designed for processing multimedia and timing traffic in home network. With various characteristics of the increased traffic flowed in home such as VoIP, VOD, IPTV, and Best-efforts traffic, the needs of managing QoS(Quality of Service) are being discussed. Making a group regarding application or service is effective to guarantee successful QoS under the restricted circumstances. The proposed design is aimed for home gateway corresponding to the end points of receiver on end-to-end QoS and eligible for supporting multimedia traffic within restricted network sources and optimizing queue sizes. Then, we simulated the area for each module and each memory. The area for each module is referenced by NAND($2{\times}1$) Gate(11.09) when synthesizing with Magnachip 0.18 CMOS libraries through the Synopsys Design Compiler. We verified the portion of memory is 85.38% of the entire CQS. And each memory size is extracted through CACTI 5.3(a unit in mm2). According to the increase of the memory’sentry, the increment of memory area gradually increases, and defining the day size for 1 year definitely affects the total CQS area. In this paper, we discussed design methodology and operation for each module when designing CQS by hardware.

  • Morphological characteristics, developmental period, and seasonal occurrence of Adeia leucomelas (L.) were investigated from 1999 to 2000. In addition, consumption of sweetpotato as food was also examined. Adults of A. leucomelas were dark-brown and body lengths of females and males were 20.2 mm and 18.9 mm, respectively, Wing expanse of female and male was 33.7 mm and 29.4mm, respectively. Egg was flat round-shape. Larva was light yellow-green to dark-brown with 3.3-53.5 mm. Pupa was deep-brown and 15.1 mm in length. Developmental periods of A. leucomelas from egg to adult emergence at different temperatures of 15, 20, 25, and 30$^{\circ}$C were 108.5, 70.7, 40.2, and 29.1 days, respectively, Developmental threshold (DT) and effective accumulative temperatures were estimated as 10.7$^{\circ}$C and 67.5 DD in egg stage, 11.0$^{\circ}$C and 275.1 DD in larval stage and 9.3$^{\circ}$C and 244.6 DD in pupal stage, respectively. The longevity of adult female was shortened with increment of temperature, whereas the total numbers of eggs laid by a female were increased. The larvae of A.leucomelas occurred from mid-June to early October, and population reached its peak during early to mid-September in Jeonbuk province. Food consumption of A. leucomelas was highest at 20-25$^{\circ}$C. Food consumption of 1 st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th larvae of A. leucomelas per day at 25$^{\circ}$C was 0.4, 3.6, 19.6, 40.7, and 78.9 $\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively.

Estimation of thinning period of Larix kaemferi Carr. plantation in the central part of Korea (중부지방 낙엽송 조림지의 간벌 시기 추정)

  • Larix kaemferi Carr. is one of main timber species in Korea that could be found in plantations and growing stands on all over the country The proper practice of thinning is one of very important techiques in silviculture, which greatly affects the quality and size of timber produced. Proper thinning period is considered to be important for maintaining stand growth before competition initiated. To investigate suitable thinning period, this study investigates the volume and radial growths of Larix kaemferi plantation in Mt. Worak located in the central part of Korea. The main findings and conclusions obtained from this study were as follow ; (1) The tree height curve equation for Larix kaemferi in Mt. Worak was calculated H=4.25783+0.80024D(H=Tree height, D=DBH). (2) To estimate tree volume for Larix kaemferi by DBH and tree height or only by DBH, regression equations were calculated as V=0.00147-0.002095D-0.000211H+0.00015D.H++$0.000744D^2$+$0.000008H^2$(V=Volume(($m^3$), H=Tree height(m), D=DBH(cm)), V=0.0000794-0.000512D+$0.000826D^2$. (3) The criteria of estimating thinning time of Larix kaemferi are the age when maximum tree height-MAI(mean annual increment) obtained and the age when annual DBH increments of dead trees decrease to below average. (4) The age of maximum tree height MAI was not significantly correlated with stocking. Therefore, it can not be used as a criterion for estimating thinning time of Larix kaemferi (5) The estimated thinning time equation of Larix kaemferi was obtained by regression analysis of the disk section collected from dead trees. The obtained equation is Y=0.2825+0.01752X(Y=Desirable thinning age, X=the sum total of nearest 4-trees interval(cm)). (6) General estimated thinning age of Larix kaemferi, which planted 3,086 stocks/ha, is concluded as 12 to 14 year.

  • Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is an effective and efficient agent for arresting dental caries. It can be useful in treating children with behavioral or medical limitations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of SDF by using salivary biofilm. Pellicle-like saliva coated structure was prepared by using unstimulated saliva. For developing cariogenic biofilm, Streptococcus mutans was added to the mixture of pooled saliva and inoculated into a saliva coated glass or chamber. SDF was applied to cariogenic biofilm to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of SDF. As time passed, total bacteria and S. mutans were reduced after application of SDF (p < 0.000). Confocal laser scanning microscope also showed the increment of the ratio of dead cell. As a result of experiment using enamel and dentin of primary teeth, it was confirmed that the growth of cariogenic biofilm was inhibited when the SDF was treated (p = 0.029 each). This study showed excellent anti-microbial effect of SDF. And anti-caries effect in clinical practice can be expected.

  • The DNA damage mechanism by fish oil peroxidation was investigated through the model system of a DNA-mackerel lipid at $37^{\circ}C$. Mackerel lipid peroxidation products induced a great DNA damage with the increment of its concentration, and such DNA damage in all systems examined occurred below $100millieq{\cdot}/kg$ in POV (peroxide value) Singlet oxygen $(^1O_2)$ and superoxide anion${\cdot}O_2^-$ greatly participated in the DNA damage during peroxidation of mackerel lipid, while hydrogen peroxide$(H_2O_2)$ and hydroxyl radical $({\cdot}OH)$ did little show the DNA damage. From the results of the addition of several active oxygen scavengers to the DNA-lipid systems, singlet oxygen ana superoxide anion greatly affected to the increase of POV ana to the DNA damage by mackerel lipid peroxidation, respectively. It indicates that there was a close relationship between the effects of active oxygens in the mackerel lipid peroxidation and its DNA damage mechanism.

Production and Characteristics of Fermented Soy Sauce from Mountain Herbs (산채류를 이용한 양조간장의 제조 및 특성)

  • Soy sauce was fermented with the addition of mountain edible herbs, Ligularia fischeri, Codonopsis lanceolata and Symphytum officinale. In general, the total nitrogen content of soy sauce was increased with the increment of the amount of added mountain herbs. The mineral contents of calcium and potassium in the soy sauce after four months of aging at 20% substitution of Codonopsis lanceolata were increased by 1.3 and 1.5 times, respectively. With 10% substitution of mountain herb mixtures, the contents of tyrosine and arginine were increased by about 2 times as compared to the control. In the Rec assay system, antimutagenic effect of soy sauce with 10 and 20% substitution of Codonopsis lanceolata was higher than other samples. The results of sensory evaluation revealed that overall acceptability of soy sauce with 7% substitution of Codonopsis landeolata and 5% of mountain herb mixture exceeded other groups of samples.

  • In order to estimate energy budget of the rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli juvenile, during the period from parturition to juvenile, of rockfish were reared at constant condition of water temperature($16^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$). Energy used by the reared juveniles were calculated from estimates of data on growth, oxygen consumption, nitrogen excretion, feeding and energy content. After parturition, total length of juvenile was 4.56~5.49mm(average 4.97mm, n=20), and the average dally growth rates were 0.50mm at $20^{\circ}C$. The weight-specific oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion rates decreased with increasing body weight. Temperature significantly affected oxygen consumption and nitrogen execretion rates, with the higher rates at $20^{\circ}C$ than $16^{\circ}C$. During the 25 days from parturition to jllveniles, feeding rates were 65.8cal at $16^{\circ}C$, and 89.2cal at $20^{\circ}C$. The assimilation effeciency estimated by nitrogen content of food and egested feces were 85.21% at $16^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. During the period from parturition to juvenile, energy was used the higher in body growth than in oxygen consumption. The gross growth efficiencies($K_1$)and net growth efficiencies($K_2$) of the rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli juvenile ranged from 43% to 47% and from 50% to 55%, respectively.

Effect of Nitrogen Application Rate on Growth and Yields of Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. in the First Year after Transplanting (참취와 곰취의 정식 후 1년차 수량 및 생육특성에 미치는 질소 시용 효과)

  • Chinese cabbage cultivation has been typically practiced in alpine sloped farmland in Gangwon province, and caused severe soil erosion by soil disturbance like tillage. Cultivation of wild edible greens such as Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. could be one of alternative ways to reduce soil erosion, because their residues become stubble mulch after harvest, and there is no need for tillage every year. Therefore, the objective of this research was to estimate the effect of nitrogen application rates for the maximum production of Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. in the early cultivation stages. Total N contents of Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. increased with the increment of fertilizer application rates. Maximum growth of Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. was observed with the highest rates of fertilizer. We obtained the relationship between Aster scaber Thunb. and N application rate, as y = $-0.296x^2$ + 73.82x + 5246 (R = 0.998). There was no significant difference for Aster scaber Thunb production between N application rates for 120 and 160 kg/ha. Also, the relationship between Ligularia fischeri Turcz. and N application rate was y = $-0.135x^2$ + 32.86x + 1529 ($R^2$ = 0.965) in the first year trial after transplanting.

Structural Analysis of Milled Wood Lignins Isolated From Aspen Wood (Populus tremuloides L.) Biotreated by Ceriporiopsis subvermispora (Ceriporiopsis subvermispora 처리에 의한 아스펜 목재 리그닌의 구조 변화)

  • Aspen wood (Populus tremuloides, L.) was biotreated with Ceriporiopsis subvermispora for 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks to observe the physical/chemical modification of wood components. Milled wood lignins (MWLs) isolated from each decayed wood were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and nitrobenzene oxidation (NBO). As fungal treatment was progressed, lignin contents continuously decreased up to 20% after 6-week treatment. The lignin polymer could be fragmented to low-molecular phenolics, which make an enhancement of alkali solubility. Holocellulose contents were not affected severely during the period of fungal treatment, only reduction of 5~6% compared to the control. Xylose contents were decreased gradually from 23.4% to 18% after 6 weeks, whereas alpha-cellulose remained almost unchanged. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) indicates that molecular weight of lignin undergoes a slight decrement for 4 weeks of fungal treatment. Nitrobenzene oxidation revealed that total yield of NBO products of lignins were lowered ca 20% after fungal treatment. Sum of syringaldehyde and syringic acid are remarkably decreased. However, increment of sum of vanillin and vanillic acid was surprisingly observed. These results work as indirect evidence that a specific lignolytic reaction, maybe selective demethoxylaytion of S-lignin, can occur during fungal treatment of aspen wood by C. subvermispora.
